The runway is there to use and I am not a fan of maximum braking/full reverse thrust throwing one forward against the lap belts if it's not necessary . Came back from Spain - can't remember where - maybe one of the Islands many years ago when Thompson, as was then, I believe had the base, on a 757. 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning if I recall correctly - no heavy braking and no reverse thrust just rolled to the end of 33! Saved the brakes and some stress on the pylons etc. and probably didn't wake Rodney and Co. :ROFLMAO:
You aren't a fan of maximum breaking or reverse thrust? Reverse thrust is only effective if applied immediately after landing. It loses it's effectiveness after that so it's no good getting beyond the midpoint and then considering reverse thrust. Personally I prefer the crew use whatever is necessary to stop the aircraft and if they can turn off at Delta or Alpha 2 then great. There's nothing better than looking at 600 metres plus of concrete after the aircraft has come to a standstill.

The runway changed to 14/32 on 4th November 1984, the day the extension officially opened, and prior to that Britannia Airways never operated 757s into LBA, only 737 200s. In fact I believe the only 757 to land on the short runway 33 was G-MOND of Monarch, and as I recall, it was empty when it landed.
I remember watching it land from the old café and it stopped with ease by around the midpoint but not forgetting it was before the threshold moved forward.

That's what I thought.
Did it leave empty?

Not sure. Can't remember why it came. It'll be 40 years now!
From what I remember the usual 737-200 was unservisable so they brought the 757 in as a replacement. The outbound flight will have probably had 130 pax on board rather than 235. It was announced on local radio so it attracted a decent amount of publicity.

Sorry if I`m drifting off line here but the 757`s operated off the Leeds runway with a full payload and did it with consumate ease.One runway more technically difficult than LBA was Gibraltar, which I`ve been in and out of many times, but the 757 operated in and out with a full payload, without restrictions. Both BA and Monarch used theirs regularly. The engine power was just something else..Boeing missed a money spinner when it ceased production.

And just for a reminder

TUI SUMMER 2024 LBA PROGRAMME

The 2nd largest UK your operator Tui will still be operating 8x weekly charter flights during the peak summer 2024 season from Leeds Bradford as follows.

Antalya = 3x weekly (Wed, Fri & Sun)
Corfu = 1x weekly (Fri)
Dalaman = 2x weekly (Mon & Thu)
Dubrovnik = 1x weekly (Thu)
Palma = 4x weekly (Tue-Wed & Sat-Sun)

  • As previously reported Antalya has switched onto Sun Express new schedule flights.
  • 2x weekly Dalaman service (Mon & Thu) still has airline to be confirmed, I'm still not sure if Freebird will be returning or if another Turkish Carrier will be operating these flights.
  • The additional Sunday Palma service which is new for summer 2024 season, now sees a 4-week period where it doesn't operate between June 23rd & July 21st as I understand the aircraft is required over at Belfast Int’l for Northern Irelands (Peak School Holidays). The airline is also still to be confirmed but expected to be Albastar.
  • Palma has also had its season slightly extended with flights now ending on November 3rd.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
