Welsh trade delegation travel to Qatar to strengthen export links

Welsh food and drink producers will aim to strengthen and build ties with prospective partners and investors when they visit Qatar later this month.
As part of the Welsh Government’s Food and Drink Wales trade development visit to Doha from 29 September - 3 October, ten food and drink companies from Wales will be given the opportunity to showcase their products to a host of distributors and retail buyers, all looking to secure new business.
Representatives from Cardiff Airport will also be among the delegation looking to capitalise on the new direct flight which operates up to 7 times per week between Cardiff and Doha, opening up the prospect of further trade and investment between the two countries.
The goal of the trade development visit is to leverage networking and collaboration opportunities between the producers, Welsh Government and the Middle East as well as strengthen business, trade and tourism relationships.
Speaking ahead of the visit, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM, said:
“This trade visit to Qatar provides a great opportunity for Welsh food and drink producers seeking to build new contacts in overseas markets and is part of our overall drive to support Welsh exports which is vital for the Welsh economy as we look to leave the EU.”
“Exports for the sector have grown in the past decade and continue to grow. I am delighted we are supporting this group of producers going out to Doha to explore new markets first hand and develop further connections with international businesses.”

The Welsh companies taking part in the trade development visit include Daioni Organic, Dairy Partners, Dunbia Wales, Farmers Fresh Wales, Fayrefield Foods, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales, Mulrines & Sons Sales Uk Ltd, Prima Foods UK Ltd, Randall Parker Foods and Rhug Organic Farm.
During the visit, delegates will take part in market briefings, meet the buyer event, trade networking events, and a store visit programme.
One of the companies, Mulrines, manufactures a range of juices and smoothies has its processing plant in Deeside, north Wales where they produce a range of fruit flavoured milk products and organic soya and almond drinks.
John Bonner, Commercial Manager for Mulrines said,
“The Middle East is an interesting export market for us. We don’t currently have a distribution network for our products in this area and see this visit as a great opportunity for us to develop this.
“Hopefully what this visit will do will promote awareness of our range of juices, smoothies and other milk products that we have on offer. As well as give us the chance to form partnerships with distributors and buyers to stock our products boosting sales.”

Another company embarking on the trade visit is Pembrokshire based Daioni Organic, leading provider of premium quality organic milk products. Recently Daioni have partnered with a distributor in the UAE and have launched initially into Carrefour with their Daioni Organic range.
Commenting Sales Export Manager, Daniel Jones is looking forward to the visit,
“Qatar is an emerging market with a growing population that offers huge opportunities for Welsh businesses in the food & drink sector. We have been in the UAE market for a few years but mainly through UK consolidators, so this was an important step in moving the brand forwards and continuing to grow in the region.
“Hopefully this visit will give us the chance to reinforce the ethics and passion behind our brand and that our products will prove to be as popular in Qatar as they are here in Wales and in other parts of the world.”

Huw Lewis, Finance Director at Cardiff Airport added:
“We are delighted to see Food & Drink Wales using the great opportunity presented by the new Qatar Airways service to develop stronger trade links. The flight allows businesses from across Wales to export not only to Qatar but further afield to global destinations across Africa, Asia and Australasia.
“At Cardiff Airport, our mission is to generate significant economic benefit to Wales and we will continue to support industry by connecting Wales to the world and facilitating trade opportunities wherever possible.”

Qatar is a highly affluent market and is one of the richest countries in the world, importing over 90% of its food requirements. Qatar is the second largest market in the Middle East for Welsh export and is one of the top 20 markets overall. The value of goods exports from Wales to Qatar in 2017 was over £158 million.
The Welsh Government’s trade development visit to Doha, Qatar takes place 29 September – 3 October 2018.

Nice little jolly for some. You ought to get in on that, Jerry. Tell them you blog regularly about CWL on F4A.
They did post on their Twitter page asking for bloggers and vloggers to get in touch and DM them about something. I was going to but git distracted at work and then forgot!
I wouldn't have been able to go anyway as the flight is on Saturday and I'm in work! And i don't think my employer would be happy if i bunked off work to go on a jolly to Doha! :ROFLMAO:

I've been following their progress on Twitter. They flown them business class! So not a bad little gig if you can get it! And i don't know if it's a one off for them or new but there was hot food served in the Lounge as well. A Welsh Cawl. If it is just as a one off makes me wonder why they can't serve it every day?

Worrying so much J class space (assuming they are travelling on concessionary tickets). Ladies What Lunch - that influential press organisation lol

She has 16,000 followers on Twitter! Lol
It is a form of PR and if seats weren't sold then they might as well use them for something like that!
I do wonder if there are any paper journos that went as well?

Educationals as they are called in the travel industry are a very large driver of business as it makes it so
much easier to sell a product if you have seen and done it

Agree - sorry its Ladies What Travel not lunch - they have 6k followers. Hope they have people like Wales Onlne and South Wales Echo, Bristol Post amongst the journos.

It was another one who had 16,000! Can't remember the name!
Hopefully there'll be a few articles in the local press. The point of the trip appears to be to promote Doha as a destination in itself rather than just as a hub.

Wales Online, South Wales Echo and Bristol Post are all owned by Reach plc, formerly called Trinity Mirror Group. Articles in one are often cascaded across to some of the other 250 regional titles owned by Reach where they are relevant to the areas covered by those other titles.

It's not uncommon, for example, to see articles on the Bristol Post website (now called Bristol Live) orginally published in Reach's Devon editions if they have some sort of relevance to the Bristol area. More than once I've read articles on the Bristol Live website concerning matters at CWL originally published on the Wales Online website.

So if only one representative of Reach plc in the Severnside region travelled his/her reports are likely to find themselves in a number of neighbouring Reach websites if considered relevant to those areas.

According to a post on SWAG CWL has now seen all the 787 8s in Qatar Airways fleet.

A post in WAF today said there are a lot of adverts around Bristol for the Qatar service. I'm usually in the central area three or four times a week - I've just come back this afternoon - but I haven't noticed any. I shall have a close look next time.

At the beginning of the service there was a prominent advert on the main platform at Bristol Temple Meads (platform 3) - the one inside the main entrance that most people use either to board trains or to reach the other platforms via the subway. It was in an ideal position. I haven't been onto the station for several months so I don't know if it's still there.

There was also a huge advert on the side of a derelict hotel at Temple Gate outside the station which was passed by anyone heading for the centre of the city via the A4 or A37 by road, or on foot and incidentally by the Bristol Airport Flyer to the airport. That one lasted a matter of a few weeks around the time the service was starting.

I wonder what sort of passenger numbers beginning or ending their journey in the West Country Qatar had estimated to pick up, and if any target they might have had has been met after the first six months of the operation.

September pax figures.
8897 pax used the service.
Load factor 58%.
Any one know why pax figures dropped again.
