Well KARFA I don't agree with you. After I spent over 46 years in Local Government, going back to the late 50s when the Councillors could only claim expenses., I can tell you that there was a far better breed of LOCAL Councillors. They were interested in the community and were always accessible to the voters. When they became paid, in some cases more than the full time staff, they became experts at everything and masters of nowt. They are professional now and live in a world of there own, and accountable only to the party, and not the electorate. These I believe this was the Blair's idea.

well i don't see how they can be professional at an allowance of £15k a year.

if you make it expenses only you are by definition restricting the people able to do it to a very narrow section of society, basically the retired or those in well off families able to be fully supported financially by a partner.

A wage doesn't make somebody professional, a persons conduct does that.

But a decent wage would attract a calibre of councillor that will be in the private sector earning a similar decent wage.

That has the conduct to act professionally and will bring some form of vision. It will also attract different walks of life rather then the stereotypical councillor - retired or backed financially by someone else.

Having over the past 2-3 years watched at length a number of streamed meetings of Welsh Government committees and the Westminster Welsh Affairs Committee regarding aviation matters affecting Wales, I was amazed at the lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject and dearth of preparation of many of the participants. These people are decently-paid MPs or AMs (now called MS - Member of the Senedd).

It was very obvious that many of the Leeds Plans Panel members either hadn't bothered to read the Planning Report, or simply haven't got the intelligence to understand it - or chose to simply ignore it's conclusions. Questions they raised were answered in the document. Matters they completely misunderstood were clarified, in that document.
The Planning Officer who did a fine job with that report must have been sickened to see that the people it was written for, hadn't bothered to read nor understand it.

We all know that Bristol and Leeds applications are different, but for the likes of Extension Rebellion airport expansion is airport expansion. Doesn't matter if the development leads to more flights or not, they are anti any airport development.

Came across this XR "stunt" yesterday (happened a while ago but only saw it yesterday) - think it sums up perfectly the kinds of people XR are:

Wish they could stay there tbh!
Shame it wasn't concrete.

I really hate the way our world is going. Thank God I lived most of my life before these people started to take control.

I believe we need balance. And we've we will never get balance. We over consumed and polluted and grew from 1950's right through to early 2000's at an exceptional rate. Only now are we going right we need to protect the environment. And we get extremists who will never ever see the balance of what is needed.

If we were keen to find balance during the 90's (after Thatcher raised the alarm god bless her) then we'd probably be in a better place. I find it alarming now that we don't have many sustainable supermarkets. They are catching up; but defo not at a speed they should have. (Sustainable - look at Middleton Asda Leeds). We should have seriously invested in our infrastructure in the 90's - train networks, railways etc. We are now trapped due to over expansion of our housing stock. All hindsight I know; but a bit of big vision for the future. Trouble is cycle of politics is 5 years. No one visions beyond 5 years.

Im with you on that WH as you can probably tell sometimes by my comments on here, the world is becoming a horrible place that seems to be controlled by the few lefty, woke, guardian reading, greta thunberg types that are gradually poisoning the media we view which in turn is changing the way many think! combined with their own self interest rather than looking at the overall picture this breed of person will no doubt cause major issues ahead. Another point to raise is what are the young ones been taught at school, i worry! anyway least i can chat to you lot on here that talk sense! (y)

I took part in an LCC webinar this afternoon on the subject of decarbonising the city. Four experts spoke and the airport was a hot topic. Basically it boiled down to 2 things, the lack of a national aviation policy and the fact that most of the carbon generated by flights had been ignored because (as we know) carbon from international flights 'doesnt count' even though it clearly exists. Someone chipped in on Zoom chat supporting one of the experts who was supporting the need for carbon international flights to be counted. I made my own comment.

The right are as bad if not worse @LBA4EVER. They won't accept responsibility and Balme the left all the time.

The media in the UK is poison anyway no matter which way they swing to.

@LBAYORKIE was this a further meeting to the one already? I know know was planned today I guess to go over the conditions negotiated? Or is that further down the line?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
