New Air 2000 757 G-OOOW first visited on 15/2,and remained based until early March when ex Eastern machine G-OOOV took over.

Charters,

The NEC Spring Fair brought in some flights as follows,4/2 Sobelair 737-400 OO-SBT was f/t BRU with Martinair A310 PH-MCA f/t AMS both day-stopping.On 17/2 Dan-Air HS748 G-BIUV was f/t BFS and Air Kilroe Jetstream 31 G-OAKJ was in on 19/20/2.Aberdeen Airways HS748 G-AZSU also visited on 20/2 f/t EDI.
Toyota chose the ICC to launch their new car production at Burnaston later this year, and attracted some interesting flights.24/2 saw Aero Leasing DC9-10 HB-IFA,AirProvence Gulfstream 1 F-GFIB,Citation SE-DPG,Maersk Air Fokker 50 OY-MMG and Belgian HP137 OO-IBJ.All these night-stopped,having brought European press to the launch.Next day Sobelair 737-400 OO-SBZ arrived, and returned on 27/2.European distributers were next to be given the presentation, and 2 flights from BRU on 28/2 were operated by Air Belgium 737-400 OO-ILJ and Caledonian Tristar G-BBAH,both returning on 1/3 to collect the pax.On 29/2 Scandinavian distributers were delivered to BHX by Braathens 737`s LN-BRP and N73FS,and collected 2 days later by LN-BRB and N73FS.During this period Caledonian 757 G-BPEE operated an Air Holland sub-charter f/t AMS on 28/2 to an NEC event.

Freight services,

On 3/2 Air Atlantique DC3 G-AMRA was used by Fedex/CEX on their BFS-BHX-BRU-BHX-BFS service, whilst Heavylift Hercules PK-PLR was used by Channel Express on their support service for UPS.The same day also produced the first visit by new TNT/Air Foyle 146-300qt G-TNTK.
On 7/2 the same Hercules returned on the BFS-BHX-BRU-BHX-BFS service. Two days later Fedex F27 OO-FEG was recorded on the EXS441F.Another unusual F27 D-AARS of German Airline FTG was used on EXS503 11/2.whilst OO-FEG came back on 20/2 and 21/2.Another rare Fedex F27 OO-FEK was used by CEX on 25/2.The Malmo Aviation BAE146QT`s continued to visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays from CGN to PIK.

Diversions,

There were 72 diversions into BHX during February, half the number of January, making a total of 216 for the first 2 months of the year. The first 2 days of the month saw more fog in the South East.On the Saturday there were 3 interesting items to mention.Heavylift`s newly delivered IL76 diverted in from ORY to STN on a positioning flight. It parked on stand 51/52 rather than the Elmdon apron,so the lack of an IL76 towbar meant it couldn`t be moved over later, effectively blocking 2 stands until Monday morning, when another crew came to collect it.... Later in the evening of 1/2 we received the regular Tyrollean DHC8 Air Ambulance service diverted from LTN.Probably the real highlight for older enthuasists was the arrival in late evening of 3 BAF Viscounts in close succession, all diverting from SEN.
On the Sunday morning the weather was still bad in the South East and we had some more interesting arrivals.Notables were the BA 737-400 from Istanbul,Busy Bee Fokker 50,and the Heavylift Belfast.Coincidently,Air Bridge were using Hercules PK-PLR on the BFS-BHX-BRU and return service that weekend, and so all 3 Heavylift types were on the ground together.Even Air Atlantique contributed with DC6 G-APSA diverting in on its empty return leg from DUB after carrying newspapers from MAN.Other diversions of interest on 2/2 were 3 Dan-Air Boeings from LGW,and the ex BA HS748 G-BOHY which was positioning to SEN to be repainted for a new operator. It was all white and stayed several days. The Corse Air 737-300 was inbound to collect French Rugby fans from BRS.
The following Saturday saw the arrival of 3 BA 747`s due to early morning fog at LHR.One was able to refuel and get into LHR later, but the other 2 were unloaded, and passengers coached onward..A real gem arrived later in the form of Royal Brunei 767 V8-RBD.It refuelled and continued to LHR affter 2 hours on the ground. We also saw the Tarom divert in from STN for the second time in 7 days.
The middle of the month produced little activity, but there was a futher crop of diversions at the end of the month,of which the Dutch registered Brasilia was the most prominent.

4 B747's at BHX

51859305997_d838856174_h.jpg

Credit to the photo owner (Brum X said it would be alright!)
I think this photo may have appeared on F4A previously.

Kevin

Yes Kevin that's the photograph that was in the back of my mind it was on the front cover of a BHX annual report back in the 1980s I've got it somewhere but can't find it unsurprisingly according to my boss (wife).

While we're on 747s .

14th of May 1998 something never to be repeated happened at BHX when two Japanese Government 744s arrived along with Air Force One carrying President Clinton for the G7 conference in Birmingham, I saw the two Japanese jumbos but missed Clinton.

The airport was an enthusiasts dream for a few days with no end of exotic stuff scattered around the place.

I remember that occasion very well. The Lockheed Galaxy's and Starlifters with the Presidential vehicles and helicopters. An amazing few days. When Clinton arrived it was getting quite foggy!.

I have just checked the back of the photo and unfortunately there is no credit to the photographer. I do remember seeing this on the wall at the old Hobby Shop when it was in the viewing gallery at the main terminal (but obviously this was a very long time ago).

I can tell you that I received my copy from Will Blunt (years ago) along with several other shots at BHX (various Cargolux CL44's amongst others).

I saw the two Japanese Government B744's depart (one after the other, direct back to Tokyo) but like yourself, somehow missed Air Force One.

I saw the Japaneses 747 practice approach to BHX (about 2-3 weeks prior to the Conference), as well as the other US flights bringing in all the kit (vehicles etc). I missed AF1 (as it came in circa 2030 hrs on the Thursday and we left the office about 30 minutes before). The departures started on the Sunday and I decided that I needed to get some invoicing upto date so I went into the office on the Sunday (complete with camera) and managed to get all the departures apart from the first Japanese 747. We even had a C-141 come in (and do a wing wave on departure). I think that was probably the only Starlifter to come into BHX. Happy Days!

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that the Japanese B747 had done a practice approach at BHX prior to the G8 summit.
As for the other visitors, I've posted my photos previously and they can be found here -

One question, was the redevelopment designed to cater for multiple wide bodied types to be in location? It was a glorious sight to see BA and VIRGIN occupy BHX territory and it reminds me of the occasion in a situation where I was at the cafeteria in the Elmdon terminal witness to the presence of a BA 747 dwarfing the building but covered in snow.

I thank Kevin for his input, wonderful stuff sir!

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
