I didn’t think there were any flights to the Greek islands from LBA at this time of year ?
When you have tremors its usually the case you get the big quake further down the line, but yes this time of year no flights to greek islands

Plus Santorini has been dropped by LS from LBA so no impact whatsoever.
Seems to be the whole region affected

It will still be putting lots of people off booking though so will airlines hold their nerve and not pull flights due current low demand. More likely to affect the big airports than LBA though due to the islands served/not served

Lots of small tremors is good. Far better than the tectonic plates building up pressure then slipping violently and causing a big and damaging earthquake. The tremors usually reduce the pressure and also the severity. No guarantees of course and the entire region is prone to earthquakes but I'd be more concerned if there were no tremors.

In the case of Santorini, I suspect people worry more that the tremors are linked to volcanic rather than seismic activity. Then, the tremors are bad news. But Santorinis last major eruption was a long time ago and the scientists I've seen quoted are definite the current activity is seismic, not volcanic due to the frequency of the shock waves.

Hopefully things will settle down before long with nothing major happening.

Still dont get why Jet2 dropped Santorini from LBA. I thought the loads were decent?

The tremors in Santorini are caused by an earthquake swarm. Earthquake swarms are in most cases associated with volcanic activity not specifically tectonic plates which usually cause earthquakes. There are a number of volcanos in the region surrounding Santorini.

Not according to the experts being quoted in various news reports, who say they are tectonic and not volcanic. The reality is that tectonic plates , fault lines and volcanic activity all go hand in hand. This area has the lot, but other than Etna and Vesuvius, both in Italy, the activity on the Greek Islands has generally been tectonic in recent history.

Given the history of Santorini, lets hope it IS purely tectonic snd there's no magma involved.

Santorini has declared a state of emergency due to the seismic activity, which has seen almost 8000 earthquakes since 26 January 2025, including 4 quakes above magnitude 5, and more than 120 tremors of magnitudes between 4 and 5. Frequent shaking is experienced on the island itself, terrorizing the local population, of which 14,000 residents or roughly 70% have left the island.
Authorities warn of high landslide risks, particularly on the steep caldera, and other coastal cliffs of the island. Public buildings and schools have been closed, emergency teams (firemen, police, as well as army members) are arriving on the island as precaution in case of stronger earthquakes or volcanic eruption. Residents have been advised to avoid the coastal areas and ports, as well as not to gather in large groups indoors.

The state of emergency will remain in effect for one month until 3 March.

There has been quite a bit of talk in the media about whether this multitude of quakes is seismic or volcanic with the view (as put forward in the article included in Aviador's post) that it is quite possible that a new volcano is being formed. The Greek authorities have swung into action - they too seem worried I think - and declared an emergency on several islands. I think it is too early to come to any conclusions as to what is really going on and what will the eventual outcome will be. It is a case of wait and watch I think, however unsatisfactory that may seem. Fortunately it is still winter season and the population of the Islands hasn't been swollen by tourists to any extent, not that is any consolation to the many thousands who have departed Santorini to Athens and are watching what happens to their island from afar. That in itself may have an implication to tourism come the summers season (May onwards at the latest although Santorini has a much longer season than most).

We have experienced quakes several times during our years visiting the Islands but never experienced the huge number showing on the charts currently. My thoughts and good wishes go to the Locals who are having to live through this.

@airforced very well said. If this does continue for any length of time it could be catastrophic for the Greek Tourism industry this year. Hopefully this remains very limited.

Closer to home there seems to be a few eruptions going on in SY at the moment which are definitely nothing to do with volcanic activity.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
