A section of footpath at the front of the terminal is closed off, looks to be relating to construction of the new main entrance/exit

The existing emergency exit ramp from Security is being removed to allow for a temporary exit to be built from the new arrivals area.
This has required a temporary exit to be created from the security entrance corridor in the glass panels.

It all looks rather complex as they need to work around the existing goods yard and current CSZ.

I think there will be a number of temporary walkways until they move central screening and use that area to create the new permanent egress.

Or to paraphrase, never......
Never say never. With passenger numbers above 4m I think LBA is on the cusp of seeing some interesting growth in the coming years.

I thought that would be the case.

A large number of temporary barriers, three large silos, and other equipment for a mobile concrete batching plant are being set up in the staging area south of 21C. This is new and suggests a large pour in the near future. Unclear if this is for ongoing runway repairs, car park paving, or new stands, but i doubt the former since we're coming to the end of winter season.

Walls and columns in current baggage reclaim have been marked for demolition.

outbound pax. Hence the reason it’s connected to 2nd floor/ departure lounge and connects to the walkway duwn to the forward holding lounge (Prefabricated building) at stand 14
It's connected to one of the staircases at the arrivals (1st floor) level, but it is for outbound pax. Less of a walk than it used to be but now there's a vertical element

Having read these really helpful posts (thanks Sputnick1) and in an effort to locate things I went onto Google Maps and Goggle Earth and I was surprised to see that the aerial view has been very recently updated showing the new extension and it appears the link walkway so I guess in the last few days.

Can you elaborate on your last comment regarding the current arrivals area?

Its certainly within the last several months but not that recent as the building has been almost enclosed for a while.
It looks to have been taken when the last lot of repairs took place on taxiway Alpha.

Noticed the new extension on Google maps, but have you noticed the earth works near Viking car park are not on there!

Yes I am aware of that but the mention of the removal of walls and columns will make the area seem more open.
I understand that’s the plan with the security facility, will be very open and be able to process a lot more passengers without the queues right through the terminal like the current one. The pics I’ve seen in a presentation are probably no different to the ones available on the website though. Hard to envisage exactly what it will look like but I expect there might be more natural light than is currently the case on that side of the building.

Really not happy with this as I genuinely thought we were done with the grotty bus shelter/portacabin combo.

Spend hundreds of millions on a project and still be left with this appalling infrastructure. #LBA

Seriously? How else fo you expect passengers to get to the Eastern stands beyond the end of the terminal extension? Walk out in the open or cram into a bus every time?
The majority of the walkway is gone so the majority of flights wont use it. I've also previously explained that whilst LBA have future plans for a two tier pier which will completely replace the remaining walkway and holding area , this isn't part if this scheme as it requires planning approval and a hefty dollop of additional cash. One step at a time! All these things can't happen at once.

Take a step back—it’s just my personal opinion, and to be honest, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek.

But since you’ve decided to go all in on me for suggesting even the slightest critique of LBA, here’s some context. Yes, part of the walkway is gone, but what remains will still serve at least six stands, meaning thousands of paying passengers will have to walk through a bus shelter and a cabin that’s clearly not fit for purpose.

Those passengers won’t remember the decent part they’ve passed; they’ll remember the uncomfortable, poorly controlled temperature, dark, windy and mouldy section. That’s why it needs to go.

And as for the “can’t happen at once” argument, I’m not buying it. Plenty of airports in the UK, many of them comparable to LBA, have already built or are planning major upgrades. They’re not hesitating to invest in better facilities. I get the planning challenges, but if LBA wants to be taken seriously, it needs to offer more than just portacabins!

Frankly, I did not go all in on you. Far from it. Also frankly, there was nothing at all to suggest you were being tongue in cheek, and this doubling down response would suggest anything but.

LBA is already investing £200m which for a 4m pax pa airport is a considerable amount. Clearly the terminal and stands and runway were seen as priority and quite right too. Submitting a fresh planning application at a time when the airport is fighting with the council over CLEUDs is hardly a good idea as it would immediately be claimed as ' further growth' when in fact, it isn't. Chances are, it would be rejected.

I would also point out that LBA has a limit to which can borrow. You seem to think they can just go out and borrow any old amount. What happens then if something happens that destroys passenger throughput as has happened twice since 2010? A bankrupt airport is what happens. Sorry but it's you that needs to take a step back, and be realistic.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
