Understanding the cost implications, it would still seem advantageous to have at least a couple as it could make it easier to attract future airlines.

I believe the cost of airbridges has dropped dramatically over the last few years. Hence the decision to replace one of them..

Yes of course they are. Airports like Leeds seeking to attract full service airlines for a limited number of destinations will have more success attracting such services if it can offer an air bridge service. Using air bridges enables brand alignment with the ability to offer a high quality more reliable service that protects its customers from inclement weather.

The airport wouldnt be spending the money if there was no demand. Im sure they've done their homework.

From the 17th, if a flight gets an air bridge on arrival how will the pax get to the new arrivals area? What walking route will they take?

Yes (and Eastern). So do Jet2 and I've seen TUi use it. I've used it myself in several occasions when flying on Jet2.

The old arrivals walkway is (or will be) linked via lifts and stairwell to a ground floor walkway in the new building which takes you to immigration.

If you want to attract the likes of Lufthansa, Air France Turkish etc air bridges while not a must are a plus point particularly in winter. Meanwhile the likes of Ryanair and EasyJet want steps front and back so passengers can shove off a.s.a.p. and the next lot of victims oops sorry valued customers can board pronto.

P.S. Ryanair and Easy are actually OK these days but if I had to choose who to suffer a delay or cancellation with the likes of TUI orJet2 are a better bet.

Flew out yesterday on FR2503…plane was full.
The Ryanair check in line went as far back as the currency exchange kiosk…crazy. This self check in is bonkers especially if there 2 or 3 FR departures close together as it takes people who are not used to it ages to do it. We had a family of 5 in front of us with 5 check incases…what a perlava that was.
Fast Track was empty thankfully, otherwise fairly straight forward.

Was the same for me a few weeks ago flying to Faro. Can't understand why there is not more self check in machines and more space around them. Perhaps that may happen with the revamp of the current terminal.

Been in Croatia for the last week. Having spoken to quite a few people Ive formed the opinion that people who live in South Yorkshire prefer to fly from EMA because its easier to get to. Also met people from Middlesborough who flew from Leeds who said that despite Newcastle being equidistant from Leeds, that Leeds is quicker to get to.

This supports the hypothesis that reopening of DSA is going to 'hit' EMA more than Leeds, and that LBA need to do more marketing around Teesside.

Getting to NCL is a pain from Teesside. Logically, you'd use the A19 and Tyne Tunnel to get North of the Tyne but the tunnel often has queues and now has App payments which can be troublesome. The alternative involves going East after Sunderland and then up the A1 from Gateshead through the Team Valley, and skirting Newcastle to the Woolsington road. This area has seen roadworks for years and often resembles a car park. So yes, relatively, NW Leeds and LBA is a pretty straight forward hours drive- except when it isn't!

That is a known within the LBA marketing teams, LBA team themselves, and the airlines themselves also know this.

LBA attracts a substantial amount of passengers for the NE with an alternative to Newcastle.

The issue with access from the south to LBA isn't the M1 or the drive (otherwise they'd moan about EMA). It is as you hit Junction 4 that the issue occurs with it taking just as long to get from M1 to LBA as it does from many parts of Sheffield to the junction you need to come off at.

It does, if you use it, but if you look on a map, it looks substantially further when travelling from South Yorkshire. And it is probably an extra 10 miles, but other than rush hour in the afternoon, it's usually clear.

I've used that route plenty of times in a lorry and it's quite quick plus now the roadworks are coming to an end so it'll be even quicker.

Yep installing a new bridge takes time.
