Only visited around a dozen times but seemed to remember it was hot in there, maybe its position exposed it to the sun? Unlike the lounge over at the old terminal which I found more comfortable.

Great link, Brum X. I love old videos too.

It is wolfheze who deserves the praise, not me. (y)
Apologies, wolfheze. I saw your (Brum X) name at the top of the page and didn't realise you were replying to wolfheze on the previous page.:sorry:

Like the way the stewardess, sorry female cabin crew puts her heels back on and gives a little smile to the camera.
Could this have been staged after the event? It's hard to believe someone would have happened to be there with a movie camera. Also I think the accident was caused by fog which there dosent appear to be much of in the film.

Interesting clip, I never seen it before.

If only my mother was still alive, she worked at Elmdon back in the day and would no doubt have remembered events such as this.

View attachment 3948 Some rather rubbish pictures from i would guess around 84/85 with the exception of the one taken from onboard what I think must have been a Paramount MD 82 which would have been in 88/89. Don't even remember seeing a BIA one eleven or the fact that there wasn't any sort of fence between the spectator area and the apron. Amazing pictures that bring back some very happy memories :)

or the fact that there wasn't any sort of fence between the spectator area and the apron

I think it may be a bit of an optical illusion. The perimeter fence was at the bottom of a rather steep bank that ran along the front of the spectator area, so probably not visible from the angle that the picture was taken from.

I was in my prime sproghood era at this time and we used to roll down to the bottom of the hill to wave at the pilots as they taxied past. It's probably rose tinted specs but my memory recalls most of them waving back. Sadly I still recall the scoldings that I received for the grass stains on my clothes. Worth it though (y)

I recall the days of Birmingham Executive Airways with their Jetstream 31's which became British European and to this day's Flybe, steadily growing yet remains within the Continent of Europe, the reason for existence.

I dread the day they consider acquiring an Airbus or Boeing as this may signal an over reach of activities....your thoughts please....!!

They've already tried a couple of 737's doing sun routes from Birmingham. I think it was around 2004 and it obviously didn't work when up against the likes of Monarch, BMI Baby, My Travel Lite etc.

There was a rumour a couple of years ago about a possible A319/320 being based at Birmingham but obviously it never happened.

Hopefully Flybe will stick to doing what they do best. Rome could be an interesting one, Flybe do well to Milan with up to three daily flights.

Flybe have operated B737-300's in the past.
I too have fond memories of the BEA J31's and also their Gulfstream 1's and SAAB 340.

I think you're mixing your concepts guys, FlyBe were British European for a while, before that Jersey European, using F27s (they still use the callsign "Jersey" now, I think) - not to be confused with Brum's own Birmingham European (with J31s then F50s) who eventually wound up as part of Maersk, using ex-BA 1-11-400s.
I think!

You are quite correct about Flybe's lineage, Barry. The first aircraft they used into BHX was the Embraer Bandeirante.
Birmingham European however started out life as Birmingham Executive Airways, initially operating 3 x J31's and then adding Gulfstream 1's and a SAAB 340.

They then went on to become Birmingham European operating One-Elevens. They had a brief spell as Brymon European operating One-Elevens and then became part of Maersk using 737-500's and F50's. Finally they became Duo following a management buyout after Maersk sold their interest. Duo operated Canadair regional jets before the airline ceased operations.

Can't remember the SF-340 for the life of me! The Fokker 50s though, OY-MMU/V, remember them like it was yesterday!
Why does my brain keep hold of this stuff? :geek:

The SAAB 340 was very problematic for Birmingham Executive. I think they operated it for less than 12 months and returned it to SAAB, due to poor reliability.

Some photos can be found here -

Ray, I see that we're drifting well off the Flybe topic here (although the discussion remains interesting). Perhaps you could move these posts to 'BHX nostalgia' or even to a 'Birmingham Executive/European' thread.

Regards

Kevin

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
