Leeds Bradford Airport is seeking to appoint a suitable Main Contractor to work on a design and build project to enhance the facilities and passenger experience through:
• Re-planning of the Passenger Search Area, and modelling to demonstrate capacity to manage 6.8 MPPA in line with the DfT 2024 compliance requirements.
• Arrivals Baggage offload / passenger routes resolved with utilisation of basement for arrivals baggage offload.
• Additional Reclaim carousels, and relocated immigration hall integrated into the Layouts
• New Retail layouts provided in outline
• PRM routes to enable enjoyment of the whole of the LBA passenger experience.
• Improved vertical circulation cores and routes.

Further details are provided in the RIBA Stage 2 report issued as part of the PQQ process. It is currently intended that works will be delivered over two phases:
1. Phase 1 - New Build Arrivals Terminal Building (approximately £28.5m budget cost)
2. Phase 2 - Remodelling to the existing Terminal (approximately £27.4m budget cost)

In addition to this there is circa £3.3m of ancillary works to support the phases above that will from part of the overall project. Client fitout works of circa £8m in value will need to be considered in the coordination of the design

I assumed the plans had already been drawn up and it was just a main contractor for building to those plans.

Oh well, we should be grateful I suppose!

The exterior plans are drawn up and they will have to comply with what was given planning consent. Internally, the airport will have ideas but the contractor is responsible for designing them and ensure they work. Hence it's a 'Design and Build' scheme with the contractor responsible. It usually saves time that way.

Well £67.2m is better than doing nothing, but half off it is been spent on remodeling the existing terminal in phase 2.

Don't get me wrong it good to see that things finally seem to be moving along. But I won't be happy until we see a main contractor on site and steel work going up.

That's the builder in me, kinda thing!

Re-modelling is more complex and therefore more expensive than building from scratch, so they will see less for their money in phase 2 than phase 1, but at least they are throwing some significant cash into it,.and not just going through the motions. They will get quite a lot done for that money..

A crucial factor I plucked out was clarification of being able to handle 6.8m passengers. Essentially the same as a new build.

However long this all takes there have been suggestions it will be 2024 when new airlines should hopefully come to LBA, so some improvements needed by then. However when this is all complete things will be a massive upgrade on what we currently have, and whilst not the shiny new terminal we all ideally wanted, this should be welcomed with open arms

Agreed, so question is will this deter new airlines until fully complete? But I suppose, if like Wizz, they can operate at quieter Terminal times then there could be some increase for 2024. Will certainly be disappointed if nothing happening by 2025. Another way to look at this upgrade is that if LBA had never even suggested a brand new terminal then I suspect we would all be jumping through hoops at this

Which seems about right as it allow from now until then for contractors to visit site, undertake surveys, consider how they intend to carry out the work, assess the materials needed, price them up, work out costs, submit a tender, await the outcome, probably attend an interview (usually 3 contractors), and eventually, someone will be awarded the contract. For a project on this scale, 6 months seems about right from advertising to contract start up. Figuring out how to transform the existing terminal whilst keeping it operational will, in itself, be the subject of much consideration and discussion..
