Rumours about new destinations or airlines?

Just out of interest dose anyone know if Air India's Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner would be able to operate either Delhi or Mumbai direct from Leeds/Bradford's short runway with a full payload of 242 passengers, The required fuel uplift and maybe some cargo on-board?

I'm only asking as I'm not one for working figures out, Thanks in advance

I don't know the figures either, but what I do know is that LBA have said more than once that the 787 is THE aircraft they have been waiting for that is capable economically flying long haul out of LBA without any need to increase runway length etc. So from that perspective, Air India with their 787's should be the ideal partner for LBA. The big question is whether they can be persuaded to bother. Nice to see local businesses adding weight to LBA's attempts to lure them here though.

Would love to see them here too ! I only wish we could offer them a Cat 3 capable runway for the big bird to use in case the weather closes in. It would seem its not long enough for an Embraer 190 to autoland now so its unlikely to be long enough for a B787 to do so. Maybe it would have to be a good weather only operation.

I've just been speaking to a manager at Jet2Holidays and he confirmed that Sharm will be back on sale for next winter. They are just signing off all the hotels at the moment before they are put on sale.

Very brave of Jet2 if it is to restart the Sharm region. The unrest in the region would certainly have me resisting the urge to fly. If were going to negotiate with terrorists for hostage release, puts us all in greater danger.

I think they realise that there is still demand for Egypt. Manchester currently has 17 flights a week to Sharm and 7 a week to Hurgarda.

Jet2 now needs to get over 90% yield on every route and higher at peak times.
There is still huge question marks about the region, even Istanbul is no longer seen as the idylic city break, national carriers financial risk is very limited
In the bucket and spade business, especially charter holidays, your on costs in times of trouble are huge, likely to wipe out a whole years profit, the repatriation from the Sharm region in mid summer, would bring any LCC to their knees.
Your at the mercy of our Foreign Office policy, not the airlines wishes.

Just want to make a few points about the "risk" to restarting flights to Sharm.

El-Arish (location of the recent attacks against Egyptian Soldiers) is approximately 300 miles from Sharm El Sheikh (Hurghada is another 50 miles further south, across the water). The region of North Sinai has historically been very politically unstable for various reasons. Sharm is closer to and is surrounded by friendly nations such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the remainder of Egypt. Egypt and Egyptians in general know how much tourism means to their country and are taking unprecedented steps to protect those interests. It is worth noting that all tourist destinations in Egypt are considered safe to visit (including Abu Simbel - site of previous attacks against western tourists) and the region of South Sinai was one of the few regions in Egypt that did not see violent protests for and against the Muslim Brotherhood and, previously, Hosni Mubarak.

The risk to tourists in that part of Egypt is not much different to that in most parts of Europe, insofar as the fact is that terrorist activity could happen anywhere, at any time (who saw the possibility of a passenger airline being shot down in Europe, for example?). There is currently as much advice on visiting Paris as there is visiting Sharm and I bet nobody would bat an eyelid at visiting France, despite the numerous threats made against it by Islamist Organisations.

For your information, Nicosia in Cyprus is the same distance (300 miles) from Kobane (which has just been cleared of IS) in Syria. Malta is only about 250 miles from Tripoli, Lybia - as is Enfidha, Tunisia, both of which are considered safe to visit. During the troubles in Northern Ireland (a time at which co-ordinated attacks were carried out on soldiers and citizens in the rest of the UK, including here in West Yorkshire), it was not suggested that the UK was an unsafe place to visit, despite Belfast being only 320 miles from London. As far as I am concerned, the world is no less safe now than it was 30 years ago. It is simply different people doing things for different reasons.

Half the problems the world faces are caused by a simple lack of knowledge or understanding. Let's join Jet2 in being part of the solution and supporting Egypt going about their normal business. As it has been pointed out already, Manchester has many weekly departures to the region. Demand is there to be had.

Excellent post whoshotjimmi. It is time LBA had its Sharm connections back if the demand is there.

I am not talking about whether we think a risk worth taking.
I am a share holder in the Dart Group and taking hotel options for a season in this area is not a risk I would vote for and not an acceptable one for the group to take.
This is a commercial decision not one about individual risk. At the moment hoteliers in this region are reducing prices to encourage customers, I would suggest below a commercial level. Jet2 holidays must protect its brand.
Its now number 3 in the u.k. holiday charter market, why damage revenue going to this area.
Hotel prices show few people are encourged to go at the moment.
I worked in Belfast and London all through the years of I R A bombing and would go to Sharm if I thought a good holiday. Just feel it is not the job of JEt2 to promote this region.
Once the FJP party was banned and whilst reporters like Peter Greste have been released, Egypt still remains unsettled.

Just to say I went in November 2013 as we got a really good deal to go to the savoy hotel. Never felt safer in a country. Army present at the airport, army present at the road towards soho square and the entrance of soho square and army outside savoy. There at every entrance to the resorts, didn't go to the lively resort down the road but would imagine they'd be there. Also a lot of police around walking around. I'd happily return and I'm glad jet2 are possibly returning. Jet2 wouldn't return if they didn't do the homework and wouldn't take such a risk but I think it's time they went back it will reduce seasonality too which is a good thing. Guessing it will be a 75 from LBA? And all bases will get SSH or just MAN/LBA?

You're such a scaremonger Tarn Spotter. That could easily have read "blast kills one at Heathrow airport" or "blast rocks Charles de Gaulle airport", sadly nowhere is immune from terrorism these days.

A further point to note is the areas around the tourist regions are regarded as relatively safe according to the governments foreign travel advice for Egypt and this includes the resort of Sharm el Sheikh.
