I've been flying to the US from Cardiff for a while now but it still surprises me at the lack of awareness of that. Went to get dollars this morning for next week and the cashier was genuinely shocked that I was able to fly to the US from Cardiff via Amsterdam. Had the same reaction again from the cashier at the supermarket. She thought you could only fly to Spain from Cardiff.

I think UK pax are genuinely ignorant to connecting flights. For example USA passengers would undoubtably need to do this a lot more than us to scale the country. Also America is so much more connected than the UK is. Also, we only have one hub airport which isn’t connected to Wales. Joe bloggs doesn’t think outside the box too much when it comes to flying and I’m sure then ME3 are first choice than say airfrance, Klm or Aer Lingus. I would imagine that a very high percentage of pax residing in wales and looking to go West would take Heathrow/Gatwick/Manchester before even thinking about the continent and using CWL as their origin. Maybe the frequency and variety of flights out of London trumps all.

I do think the size of the UK doesn't help. It isn't that hard to get to airports like Heathrow from most of the UK including Wales and it seems many people are put off by connections. But the AMS route is growing so hopefully that will help with awareness.

That being said I have flown KLM a lot this year and every flight is full of people connecting and very few seem to have Amsterdam as their destination. Part of it is down to travel agents who always seem to default to Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester and you have to ask for them to look at connections from Cardiff.

Emirates have created a ginormous airline out of connecting passengers. I would imagine less than 10% of their passengers originate or terminate in Dubai.

Disappointed that I've missed them because I'm working but the Red Arrows are overnighting at Cardiff tonight and will be in and out of the airport tomorrow I believe.
Also I don't know if it happened but there was supposed to be a visit from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight I believe.

The Red Arrows are displaying tomorrow (Sunday) at the Weston-super-Mare Air Festival.

Brand new aircraft jets in to Cardiff airport to join DragonFly executive fleet

DragonFly Executive Air Charter has today formally welcomed a brand new, state of the art Textron Beechcraft King Air 250 turboprop aircraft to its growing fleet.

This aircraft, which touched down recently at its new base at Cardiff Airport, flew in from the Textron manufacturing facility in Wichita, Kansas, USA – stopping at Montreal, Goose Bay, Greenland and Iceland along the way.

The aircraft is to be added to the Company’s Air Operating Certificate and will then be generally available for commercial charter, and based at Cardiff Airport.

Howard Palser, Chief Executive and Managing Director of DragonFly Executive Air Charter praised the King Air as an aircraft that ticked all the boxes for private air travel: “The King Air 250 delivers excellent performance, the reliability afforded by jet engines and the turboprop’s ability to take off and land from short runways.

“The aircraft are pressurised and air-conditioned and are certified to fly at heights well above inclement weather. I’m delighted to be able to offer clients the latest version of the aircraft with improved fuel-efficiency, a faster cruising speed and the ability to operate up to 35,000 ft.”

Spencer Birns, Commercial Director at Cardiff Airport, added: “DragonFly has been a valued partner of ours for 15 years and it’s great to see the business thriving. Our runway facilities at Cardiff Airport are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with no slot constraints which makes our airfield ideal for executive air travel.

“Part of our long term vision is to create a sustainable airport for Wales, by making best use of our current portfolio of products and services and identifying new ways to diversify our business. We welcome the addition of this new aircraft to the DragonFly fleet and look forward to continuing a successful relationship with our valued partner.”

DragonFly, which this year celebrates the 15th anniversary operates a fleet of five business aircraft.

DragonFly was found by Howard Palser to primarily to serve the South Wales business community, by providing a time-efficient and cost-effective means of travel to destinations throughout Europe.

His mission was to demonstrate that private charter was not the exclusive preserve of celebrities and the very wealthy, but should be viewed as a practical business tool enabling companies and individuals to save substantial amounts of valuable time by taking control of when and where they fly.

CAA stats for May our - not great figures esp QR when operating for full month but still growth.....
I hope that Jerry will do his usual comprehensive list and full analysis in the CWL CAA stats forum. He is currently on his travels but is maintaining contact with F4A as his recent posts have shown.

Jerry did a top ten list on dried plum. So I can only think it will show here in the not too distant future.

QR was operating on 5 a week in May, full 1 a day service only began in June, so could be worse... Aircraft must still be operating with <50% loads though which is pretty bad after a year of operation

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
