Hi,
Does anyone on here know where the airlines advertise for check in staff at MAN? I've been searching their websites for almost a year now and only Jet2 seem to advertise?
Am I looking in the wrong place?

I can't directly answer your question however I would suggest that you look at contacting the various handling agents directly.

From my memory Jet2 many be the only airline who actually employ their own staff at check-in, all the other airlines use employees of a handling agent.

Not sure how but Manchester has to try and crack this American mentality of using Heathrow.

I might be wrong but I suspect the majority of OUR pax are UK originating flying back and forth but have no evidence to back this up.

Do we know how to get at these figures ?

I don't think the figures are public and I doubt they'll ever be released.

It's difficult to break the American psyche that Europe means Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam and the UK = London.

It can be done and things like Man U, Liverpool and Man City put the North on the map. The media industry should help develop this brand further.

Ultimately, we need the business links to make it work.

Obviously this carries implications for MAN, and it's continued growth, which is supported by Leeds, Liverpool and the wider North of England.

A nice little section, which illustrates Manchester's growth and hopefully therefore, it's attractiveness and business market to airlines over other British cities. A great article and great to see for Manchester!

Worth noting that Cambridge, Bristol and Oxford are ahead in the UK, but European and aviation related, we are on par with or ahead of the likes of Brussels, Madrid, Lisbon, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Milan and Munich.

MAN is 16 for start-ups and for scale-ups so also shows growing existing businesses.

In terms of global city rankings, that provided by the Globalisation and World Rankings Research Institute is considered the leading institute in such matters. Economic factors are rated more important that cultural or political ones.

Cities are ranked into Alpha, Beta and Gamma cities. The latest list (see link below) shows 181 world cities ranked from Alpha++ to Gamma-.

London and New York are at the top, both ranked Alpha++.

Manchester is the next highest ranked UK city with a Beta ranking. The other UK cities in the list are Birmingham and Edinburgh (both Beta-); Bristol (Gamma+); Glasgow, Leeds and Belfast (all Gamma).

The list seems to be from 2012 although there is a notation on the linked website saying 'updated 2015'. I never regard this sort of thing as completely accurate but I suspect enough research was done to give provide a flavour of things. Anyway, Manchester is clearly the top UK city outside London.

I think that Beta+ would be a more suitable group for Manchester e.g. on par with Dusseldorf and Philadelphia, but we are clearly the most attractive city outside of London in the UK which is a good thing.

It's a pity we couldn't have landed snapchat who are following Facebook in setting up their European HQ in London.

Given the gridlock that the Capital is experiencing on a now daily basis re commute I'm suprised they didn't go left field.

The clue is in the "tech" . It doesn't need to be in the capital and with largest student/graduate campus in Europe there is a large market to tap into.

The problem is all about a cohesive message and we don't seem to have anybody on Manchester Salford Media City who can recognise these opportunities and pounce.

I'm sure Facebook and Snapchat woll love the prestige but have zero idea what a shambles trying to commute in London now is.

No point having offices if your staff cannot get there !

Great publicity although I don't get why this lucy Lovell is employed by the MEN she always has to add that touch of belittling eg "Ancoats" rather than celebrating some great publicity.

When the London Evening Standard suggested Manchester was number place to visit for londiners last last year she couldnt help but came up with a list of corny outdated clichés.

Has there any been any service between Manchester and Nairobi? What was the frequency of the flights to Mombasa that operated?

At peak afew years back at least a couple of charter operators ran weekly MAN-Mombasa (B763's?). But I suspect that success would be difficult to replicate now. Resorts located to the north of Mombasa have been repeatedly targeted by Sh*t Kebab terrorists and kidnappers raiding across the border from lawless Somalia. OK, I may have corrupted their title of choice slightly but I'm very happy to offend them to the maximum extent possible! This activity has decimated tourism to the region. In this era of rampant excramentalist terrorism, I doubt that major tour operators are keen to reintroduce another high-risk destination on a mass-market basis.
