Most likely reaction (if any) will be for them to expand their offering at Liverpool (and maybe to a lesser extent Manchester).

There's a number of smaller airports that Jet2 operate to from other bases that EZY don't (Reus, Girona, Almeria, etc) whilst there's plenty of city destinations in Germany and Italy in particular that EZY could serve that Jet2 wouldn't.

My point being there's enough room for both to exist with relatively little competition. Only 11 of the 25 routes easyJet operate from LPL will have competition from Jet2, and of the 20 destinations Jet2 will operate to, 9 are destinations that easyJet don't.

easyJet likely have a list of bases they are planning/considering. Jet2 launching at LPL may cause EZY to shuffle some aircraft around and might delay some planned opening of bases, but I doubt it will re-order that list.
I think the opposite, they have scaled back quite a bit at LPL recently in favour of MAN, they’ve pulled their bases at NCL, SEN and STN and flown increasingly to those places from other bases. Not sure why this move would result in them increasing at LPL? As mentioned elsewhere, they have a Europe wide network but their base network in the U.K. alienates probably 50% of the population. They ‘tried’ to set up shop at DSA but this proved fruitless, they have a token presence at LBA in the form of an BFS service a few times a week. They do not have a base in Birmingham.

I get why Jet2 have moved in to LPL, they had to to satisfy their growth plans. It’s also an efficient airport with a large market that they are now confident will compliment MAN. They will open more bases in the future. Easyjet are not a direct competitor to Jet2 any more, TUI are. I understand TUI have started selling holidays from LPL more using easyjet seats, which may help your argument when it comes to holiday destinations, but the based aircraft may be better utilised elsewhere. LBA being a prime example of a market neglected by them for years.

Problem for LBA is that there is no room, and I can’t imagine there would be much appetite to fly from Malaga and Faro during quieter times and in direct competition with Ryanair, I think it would be a base with primarily un-served and under-served destinations if/when it happens.

My point wasn't so much saying easyJet would expand at Liverpool in response to a Jet2 base but more if they were to respond in any way, focussing on Liverpool would be more likely than launching any new routes to or open a base at Leeds.

There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.

I agree, appreciate my point previously was not clear. I’m not suggesting they will pull out of LPL and move everything to LBA, certainly not as a reaction to the move by Jet2 to open a base at LPL. That would never happen.

Like Aviador alludes, this could go either way for easyjet at LPL. They may focus more on LPL to strengthen their position there, or they may redeploy some assets elsewhere and maintain a presence at LPL by more use of out-stationed aircraft. Jet2 and Easyjet are not direct competitors at the moment, not at least until easyjet holidays becomes a more serious focus. Even then, it would take years to catch up with the Jet2 product and I’m not sure they could or would want to.

LPL has a strong European market on the back of it being a famous city with many links to Ireland and the Continent, clearly Easyjet and Ryanair do well out of exploiting that. However, easyjet do appear to have stagnated somewhat at LPL with focus on the North West being at MAN. My suggestion is that if they can significantly reduce their presence at places like STN and NCL, then there is no reason not to believe that might not be the case for LPL with the extra capacity being shored up elsewhere.

Please note I am not suggesting this is in anyway as a direct result of Jet2 moving in, but I do wonder whether all the stops have been pulled out to finally get Jet2 to agree to a LPL base on the back of something else happening at LPL.

Back on the topic of LBA, if easyjet decide they want to expand their presence East of the Pennines then there is really no viable contender other than LBA now. Pure speculation as I don’t know what easyJet’s growth strategy is currently in the U.K. but I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect that they might want to bolster their presence at BHX (underserved by them) and also LBA when the time is right. Should they do that, then it is open to debate as to how they might find the capacity to do so.

I’m taking this as positive growth, so there may yet be seven more aircraft to be allocated. Could we see this rumoured SOU base be announced? Also could there be the slightest chance of an LBA base?

Sorry I put that in the wrong thread and forgot to delete it!

I dont see Easyjet doing anything rash at Liverpool, where will they go in the NW ? Space at MAN isn't limitless, and as a frequent flyer through LPL, I can tell you, you hear time and time again from passengers " I dont like Manchester Airport ".

If they get the hump, they only have themselves to blame for messing around with routes and not developing the base quicker, they have been asked, enough times, so they can't complain when someone else does.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
