Most of them have only just been recruited! So they apply for a job based on a given wage, train up, start work then vote to strike??

That said, wages are not good across the sector and it's a high pressure non stop stressful job..

LBA will have to sort this and quick. Chances are too that it could spread to other airports.

I suppose now they’ve seen the total disruption that a lack of security staff at airports can cause and the fact inflation is currently running at 9.4% and rising they think now is an opportune time to threaten strike action. Looks like aviation (and many other sectors) are going to have to take a long hard look at the low pay of many of their employees. We as consumers will be paying more to travel by air as labour costs inevitably rise. Seems the GMB Union agrees with Albert Einstein that “in the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.”

The airport have called it cynical, and it is. The Union say they have never gone on strike before but the majority of the staff have only been there a few months at best. They have applied for a job knowing the wages, terms and conditions, then as soon as they're trained up, hold the airport to ransom to force a pay increase across the board and knowing what impact it will have on passengers.

LBA have said that the total wage package has increased since February by 15% but I suspect this includes bonuses which the staff don't like. So they say they will strike for 4 days from 24th August.

Wokeism. However we have to understand and address the careers in aviation that are very poorly paid - Security Staff, gate Staff, Check in etc. All in the name of "low fares".

I don't back the strike, but nor will I condone it. They won't however get much sympathy from the paying public.

The Union say 93% voted to strike so if that's the case, the majority are new employees.
Perhaps they are all members of GALBA??

I suspect an agreement will be reached before the 24th. There's no way they can let this go ahead, but the problem is that he GMB Union can use this as a weapon against any airport at any time.

Thin end of the wedge sadly. I find the whole thing disgusting even if average wages are not great. Applying for a job, being trained up at airport expense, getting government clearance at airport expense, and starting work as recently as late June, then threatening to go on strike over pay only 6 weeks later is not on. It seems they have been pushed into supporting those who have been there longer, no doubt with the union putting them under pressure. Let's also not forget that the airport is itself recovering from the pandemic and huge multi million losses over a 2 year period.

The trouble is however Unions are now on the rise and strike action is something I can see coming in a lot of industries etc. If you can give pay rises to your staff great and they should be offered. A yearly pay review should occur.

We have to remember no one applied for this job with the knowledge that the useless regulator, OFGEM, was going to authorise a price cap of nearly £4.5k from £1.2k last October.

Unless this, quite frankly, useless government get a grip of the robbers that are energy companies, or nationalise it, then strikes will be the way forward to get the pay people need to live. Currently some and more will end up not living but surviving. And sadly, security staff @ LBA, and in general up and down the UK do a highly pressured job, that could quite literally with a mistake kill up wards of 600 people, whilst they are generally paid similar to supermarket staff at Aldi/Lidil.

People should be able to LIVE on their wage, not, SURVIVE.

Once again this is all down to the Chinese covid, everythings a mess because of it. When things are bad and inflation is high due mainly in part to whats been happening over the last 2 and a half years its on the cards that it will become strike central. Everyone else is striking, they might as well too. Its certainly going to be a dark winter with mass inflation and sky high bills etc

But in cases like this when things are looked at in a wider scale it sometimes appears that top management are doing very well thank you. Leaving the 'face workers' at a disadvantage. I agree that workers should be able to live on their pay not exist.
And talking about government they are the biggest robbers of all, especially as they voted themselves a £2,200 (min) increase in pay. They should try and manage on OAP pay.

Why would management take the pay cut? They are happy living on their wages so won't be bothered about those below. Sadly management, not all, and not all managers in the industry, view it people who leave as "replaceable" especially pre covid crap. I hope they view it differently, considering as I've said, you could work for Amazon, Lidil or Aldi and be paid more.
