Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Last week I asked Airbus about Airbus A350 operations from BRS and LBA.

@Airbus #AskTheA350Crew Can the A350 operate from short runways ie LBA or BRS in the UK.

This was the answer:

@Forums4airports Quick performance check : we could operate from either of those two at medium weight.

That might seem disappointing but medium weight doesn't mean the aircraft can't depart without a full load of passengers but it's range will be limited.

Over to the number cruncher!?

A check on the web suggests that the 900 series (the 800 series sees to have been phased out although a few are in service) can fly around 14,000 km with passengers and baggage. I suppose then that the Middle East should be in range at medium weight, also the east coast of the USA if airlines decide to use this type on such routes. I don't know if any do at the moment.

Not sure which airlines have orders in for the A350? None that bother with LBA I would think but you live in hope that someone might choose to operate one from LBA. As is the case with the Boeing 777 200 and 787 - we can accommodate but not with a full load - but they don't need to have a full fuel load to get across the Atlantic - or to the Indian sub continent, or to Dubai - which are most likely destinations?

Qatar have them !! Daily Doha would be fine by me I would give them my custom to Oz if I could fly from Leeds.

In modern times, a Jet2 737-300. However, going back forty-plus years when the (six) stands were self-manouvering, a Vickers Vanguard parked on stand 1 at least once. Then again, it could have been stand 2. I was very young at the time.

During the Dock Strike in 1972 Super Constellation F-BGNG was parked on stand 1 facing the fuel farm.
I believe it had brought in a load of bricks.

That's a blast from the past Twev. The national dock strikes in the late 1960s and early 1970s did produce some interesting sights.

Some that spring to mind, but no dates remembered, were a Fred Olsen C-46 Commando, a Fragtflug (Icelandic) DC6, a Fred Olsen L188 Electra with televisions. There were many more .....

Barnsley Holidays

There were two DC6's based t LBA for a period of time during the dock strike, TF-OAA and TF-OAB which both carried freight. They were both in grey camouflage colours, and I belive the had previously been employed by the Red Cross working in Biafra.

The also used the old runway 28 for departures when the wind allowed.

Daft question this may seem but whats the largest aircraft you've ever seen parked on Stand 1 at LBA?

Mines either Jet2, B733 or the USAF, DC9

733 Jet2. If I overheard correctly I'm lead to believe that a jet2 733 is to be parked in summer on stand 1. No aircraft park in winter on this stand as this is where they store the snow clearing equipment - which at the moment has not been put into use.

Noticed that this afternoon taxiway Delta has been closed, meaning departing a/c have been backtracking from November. Anyone know the reason for this?

Closed again this morning between Delta 1 and Delta 2

Don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere but today whilst up at the airport I noticed today that 757 landing on 32 were having to backtrack to taxiway Delta. Is there something wrong with Taxiway November? Was just a little unusual to see this.

Holding point November 1 is closed due to a fault. It has been closed since last weekend and will be until the fault is repaired.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
