I think the MEN have used Hyperbole in the headline, but the core principle that passengers would rather fly indirectly to their destination (via LHr or wherever) is clearly a nonsense.

Of course passengers want to fly direct on point to point where possible. If they have to connect somewhere, it makes little difference whether the connection is in Europe, the Middle East, Far East, Africa Or the Americas.

Surely Air Arabia Maroc to Tangier? Great expansion into Morocco this year, if so. Ex-pat population in the NW, business links to support Casablanca and large tourist traffic for destinations such as RAK/Agadir/Tangier

Only other options if not Tangier would be Fez or Nador

Suggests connections to Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, as Heathrow slots are very hard to get

While airlines focus largely on Heathrow, the UK government is making a pitch for connections to other airports, such as Manchester, Birmingham and also the Gatwick airport south of London.

I think we should rejoice re the India bilateral!

I was apoplectic re the comments of The aviation minister toward Manchester but to be fair he has turned full circle re this news, I'm almost of the opinion he was irked by the comments in the MEN but much as i would like to believe this I suspect he was oblivious and it's merely an accident of timing.

To actually have an aviation policy that positively descriminates FOR regional airports where previous policies were against them AND 100% slated toward Heathrow is a monumental transformation in my view !

Hopefully there are no catches.

Interestingly there is a chain of thought that EVERY Indian domestic carrier wants to run long haul !

For MAN, India, Japan and Thailand are the last pieces of the first realistic puzzle. It would seem more obvious to me for Jet Airways to do BOM-MAN (which I think is a bigger market than DEL) connecting to the VS/DL operation and then BHX can still have monopoly on DEL/ATQ

Agreed Mumbai is the prize

India is the fastest growing economy in the world and it's Mumbai that is the Powerhouse. With a hub at Amsterdam I just cannot see it being Jet !

I don't think Jet will do a transit hub at MAN, considering they have that at AMS, but they do operate into CDG and simply codeshare with the TATL services of Delta/Air France and I am not sure if they do so in London.

The only other option is Vistara, if they get the fleet and SQ have a long standing commitment to MAN. Scoot were also mentioned but would that cater for the business seats needed between MAN and Mumbai/Bangalore? No, not really.

I would like to think that the numbers have increased since that time plus the introduction of new services normally stimulate demand

Since 2012, already, MAN has turned around significantly. I remember in 2010-ish when transatlantic flights were at an all time low, yet now we have one of the highest numbers of TATL flights out of most European airports!
