Falling away from Edinburgh with their 10% increase in Jan. but Glasgow fell back 9%. Well we're on the way up but I still hope for more continental EU destinations to support both business and tourists pretty soon. I believe the B word is having a negative effect on BHX's ambitions in recent times - even if we don't hear too much at present from the new boss but I feel that will change.

It makes me wonder how much longer Vienna will manage to cling on for. Despite the poor numbers I hope that yields are good enough to continue.

The less said about Air Arabia the better. This is one service that may really benefit from a bit of advertising, I've mentioned it to many a person who had no clue about it and were looking at other airports for flights to Morocco.

Maybe they would be better switching to a Eurowings Dash 8 ?? The Airbus A320 is obviously too big.

Wouldn't fancy a flight that long on the Dash 8. The block time for Dusseldorf to BHX is already 15 minutes longer for the Dash than the A320, and Vienna is over twice as far as Dusseldorf. For Vienna it would turn a 2hr flight into 2hr30 at least.

Somethings seriously wrong if they can't make a 4 weekly A319 to Vienna work.

Despite the loss of airlines and routes, it is great to see the overall numbers up.

And I am sure visitors to and from Vienna will increase soon.

Hi there Ian butty, I agree with you on overall numbers up, but the main factor here is as you say, loss of airlines. Birmingham airport cannot keep relying on existing airlines to prop up the figures, it's all down to the management at bhx to wake up from dreamworld, so those airlines from pulling out, otherwise it's going to come to a point where the existing airlines are going to start questioning the current presence at the airport, as to whether it is worth staying at bhx or pulling out as well, because quite frankly Ianbutty, bhx management think that they are a massive airport, when actually, they aren't, birmingham airport is only a regional airport and not a hub like kehoe used to think birmingham airport was. Saying that birmingham airport in year's to come could challenge Heathrow for business. I'm sorry, those comments that I read about some two years before he left in a London paper made me laugh. Birmingham airports new boss has got to do a deal with easyJet to bring them in... AndyC

Hi Andy. I agree with you that we cannot rely on existing routes, and must expand.

However, the underlying trend is back upwards albeit compared with the last year - see Ian F last post. I have less concern for the airport but more concern for how the city region is perceived.

Something went seriously wrong at BHX. Monarch aside, if I was the new CEO I would have my breathing apparatus on for one heck of a deep dive to figure out why a rapidly expanding airport in terms of numbers, route development and new airlines, should suddenly fall off Cabo Girao (assuming one can still fly to Madeira to see the massive cliff).

Was PK successful or leave a damaging legacy? It is like the free spending football manager: he may save you from relegation but they will leave you with a massive and unsustainable wage bill or with players free to leave whenever they want.

Or did the 2 years of no CEO plus the departure of other key players dent confidence in the airport?

Or is it simply over capacity on the TATL and Europe networks and as airlines finances weaken they close the one in the middle?

Mr Barton may already know but once he does only then can he put the growth plan back in place.

It may be that 18mppa by 2030 is it. And the focus will be on the airport experience and dependency on our fine neighbours North and South for the market BHX cannot sustain. Use the airport as a transport hub with via HS2 fast trains to Manchester and London. As long as investment comes to Birmingham who cares what airport it travels through. Manchester or London providing the business travel needs of Birmingham is just fine. Amsterdam has been doing that for decades.

For now the news that we are tentatively growing again is welcomed.

It's also worth noting that around the same time that Paul Kehoe left we also saw our highly experienced Director of Aviation, William Pearson, depart for pastures new.

I wonder how much that had an effect, if it did at all?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
