Brief overview of BHX's recovery - April 2022 vs April 2019 (courtesy of the monthly CAA Statistics):

North America/Caribbean is leading the recovery having recovered to 95% of pre-pandemic levels. This is helped by the US reaching 183% of April 2019 levels. The rest are: Europe 77%, Africa 74%, Domestic 62% and Asia 53%.

Six countries have surpassed April 2019 levels:

USA: 183%
Romania: 156%
Mexico: 144%
Hungary: 131%
Turkey: 120%
Greece: 119%

Another four countries have surpassed 90%:

Portugal: 97%
Croatia: 95%
Switzerland: 91%
Poland: 90%

Sweden, Iceland and Lithuania are new markets, whereas Qatar and Slovakia have yet to return.

May passenger figures now released by the CAA, total of 882,907 passengers, giving a total of 2,883,944 for the year.

You had me worried @Matt995 in your original post when you mentioned figures for June - but could I find them on the CAA site!!

Here is my 'take' on the figures for May. I don't disagree with Matt995's figures as he is using, quite correctly, the data from Table 9 which gives the Total Terminal and Transit Passengers. Where the variation comes in is when I try to break down that figure into Domestic & International. Table 12.1 (International) shows 803,622 passengers and Table 12.2 (Domestic Air Passenger Traffic Route Analysis) gives 79,598. However Table 12.3 (Domestic Air Passenger Traffic Route Analysis by Each Reporting Airport) totals 79,364.

All that I can say is that the CAA does appear to like to make our lives very complicated!!

I remember the days Birmingham actually published their own passengers figures on a monthly basis, and they never matched the CAA figures, so you never knew which figures were correct!

June figures are out from the CAA:

June 2022: 1,043,756 (up 1010% on 2021) - first month BHX has handled over 1m passengers since October 2019.

Comparing back to 2019 (pre-covid), June saw 83% of "normal" passenger levels.

2022 Q1: 51% of 2019
2022 Q2: 78% of 2019
2022 H1: 66% of 2019

Rolling 12 month total: 6,175,121 (49% of 2019)

Average passengers per movement in June 2022 was 143, 10% higher than the record before Covid of 129 in August 2019.

Anyone know what's gone on with Antalya?

Back in June 2019, it wasn't even in BHX's top 20 routes, and now it's number 4, saw over 80% more passengers this year than in 2019, and currently has five! airlines serving it. As far as I can tell, no other route from the airport has that many airlines serving it?

I know tourism to Turkey had been increasing in recent years before the pandemic, and during the pandemic I went with family when previously we'd never even considered it (at the time it was the only "hot" country on the green list).

Even Dalaman only has 3 airlines and saw a 20% increase vs 2019.

Both Tui and Jet2 have double daily services some days to DLM and AYT...this year. Must admit...Antalya totally sticks out as a success this summer. Had to look twice at pax figure and position....

I believe the Turkish Lira is at very low value currently, which may make it a cheap destination from the UK (is the route doing similar from other UK airports?). However, Antalya will still need hotel rooms etc to accommodate the travellers. Whatever the reason, it's good to see it being successful from BHX.

Known as the Turkish Riviera...there are literally hundreds of five star properties from Kemer all the way to Alanya. With the Russians not arriving in their droves like they usually do, europe has stepped into the breach with the Germans now taking the crown for amount of arrivals.
With Turkish, Pegasus, SunExpress and Corendon doing less flying to Russia.....guess where they've turned their attention on........

I have been AYT for a week and most days 1,000+ movements, very hard work spotting and sun bathing.
The airport itself is probably the worst airport I have ever departed from - nightmare !

Also im not being funny but there must be a weird atmosphere in the departure lounge when there are russians and western countries next to each other, one of the very few places where this would happen right now.

I was in AYT last week, no issues with the Russians at all.

That’s interesting. It is clear that they are keeping their heads down. Contrary to my extensive experience of their overt culture in Marmaris, Goa and Kerala in India, Thailand etc.

Worth remembering that not all Russians agree with the invasion and many are as horrified about what has happened as the rest of us are.

When this is all over, I do hope there isn't any lasting resentment against Russians when essentially it's Putin that forced the invasion not Russia.
