Birmingham Airport Rumours

This is the thread to talk about rumours you've heard about BHX services.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Im afraid BHX rumours are few and far between. I think the routes development team has gone home and not come back.......

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

This thread is to discuss rumors about BHX, whether it be works or services. Here's what we have got so far:

Strong rumors include:

- AI DEL-BHX, three weekly on an A332, due to start in October.
- Runway extension to start works this year
- BHX's route development team appear to be reviewing some new services & upgrades. These being a third daily EK DXB-BHX, AA to ORD, PIA to KHI and LHE, CO to 764, and QR to DOH. I'm not going to keep my hopes up as nothing seems to have come of it. I had contacted the airport regarding these saying that they were going to forward these ideas to them. If only we knew someone who could go to the route development team to see what they are considering, and find out any other way.

- AA's Capacity planning team are reviewing a renewal of a daily BHX-ORD. Most likely to be on a 763 or 772, due to commence soon.

Nothing to keep your hopes up for, it's not confirmed at all. If it is confirmed, then announce it on the news thread. We still need someone to find out from airlines whether they are having meetings considering BHX. Maybe someone can go over to airliners.net forums and start a BHX thread to see if anyone knows anything? I can't post in the Civil Aviation forums unfortunately.

Aviador, please put this post replacing the above (and also, removing this sentence)

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

Where do you get the info that airlines are having discussions?

Also, to avoid confusion, I think there is only a need for a separate thread for news if it is a major addition, such as a new service. If it is just an upgrade, best to keep it here unless there is already a thread for the airline.

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

I get my info because I know the right people to talk to or I am directly involved.

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

With the airlines? Are there a lot of them that you are involved in?

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

Well, Im involved in 3, but also have alliance partners in for meetings too.

The other airlines, I just have to rely on what my 'sources' leak to me.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Well, I can quash one rumour for you:

AA are NOT looking at BHX. And certainly not with a B767/B777.

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

OK. Please tell us if you come across anything related to BHX.

I don't think there is a need for this thread to be a 'sticky' as it's just for rumours. It makes sense to have the 'news' thread as a 'sticky' and I have done that for you. The thread will of course go to the top when a new rumour is posted here.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Rumours can often be confused with people's wish lists.

Someone will say that Route B from Airport Z with, say, forums4airports Airlines would work and in no time people start saying or posting they've heard rumours it's about to be announced.

At BHX, as with all airports, discussions are held all the time with airlines, often with the airport knowing there is no real chance but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Occasionally, news of these discussions leak out or are leaked out, and more rumours follow.

I never believe anything until it is announced officially, and even then it's not unknown for an airline to pull a previously announced route before it even started.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

If you would suggest to an airline that they could start a route to here and there, and they are considering it by forwarding that suggestion to a planning department, saying something like:
We appreciate you sharing your suggestion to operate a direct flight between Mumbai - Birmingham via Amritsar. We have forwarded your suggestion to the Network Planning Department, who will examine the same keeping in mind our aircraft fleet, Economic viability, and requisite clearance from the authorities.
would that be something to get the word out about?

Also, what does this mean:

who will examine the same keeping in mind our aircraft fleet, Economic viability, and requisite clearance from the authorities.

Anyone able to give a clear explanation?

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Basically, they look at every aspect of a proposed route to study if it is viable.

They need to make sure ticket prices could sustain a route, the right aircraft to run the route (you dont want too many seats for a market), and to make sure they actually have the permission to run such a route.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Well, in a month's time, I'll email the airline again to see if they are taking this suggestion forward.

I'm very confident that it would work, and in my email to them I explained just that. I mean, Mumbai isn't and hasn't been for a while, served directly from Birmingham, and going via Amritsar will provide a direct link that is needed. In 2005/2006, they applied for BHX and were going to operate three weekly from Amritsar & Delhi on an A343, but the airline hadn't got rights to operate into BHX from the Indian government. At least that showed that they were interested, but this time round an A330 would be right. Yes, they would have to get permission but hopefully they'll look at AI's figures for BHX and how profitable it was. If 20,000 people sign a petition demanding direct flights between India and Birmingham with any airline, then that would mean that it would be a success.

Are you fully sure AA aren't looking at BHX? I emailed them once again to try to get more info as to if they were going to start it, they said they hadn't made an announcement yet but they didn't say if they were considering it, so for sure, we don't know much.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

No AA are not interested.

there was a brief murmouring that 2012 could see a summer service to JFK, but constant fuel price rises ended that idea quickly.

Obviously, things can change, but for now, BHX is not on AA's radar.

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

In that PM you mentioned some airlines, anything come of them mentioning BHX?

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Its only been a couple of hours since that pm hassan, they dont talk about BHX 24/7!
Youd be lucky if airlines mention BHX on a weekly basis!!!

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Going by what world-rep is saying, I dread to think of how often airlines mention HUY :shok:

Re: Birmingham Airport Rumours 2011

Haha, well, its just there are that many airports worldwide constantly after the attention of airlines, its obvious that they may not talk to each other for weeks on end.

Obviously, when talks do start, then they talk on a daily basis until a deal is done/suspended. Some airlines however, do have more regular meetings to discuss options.

For example, MAN is in talks with no less than 9 different airlines, and some talks are in their advanced stages, some in the beginning/intermediate stages.

Other airlines, such as easyjet have weekly talks with MAN, which is why 3 new routes are about to be announced there, as well as our new Bilbao last week.

Hassan, at the end of the day, its no good just writing to these airlines saying 'serve here', as they need to build a relationship with the airport, discuss fees, bilaterals and so on. Even if say, jet airways turned round to you and said 'yeah ok, we will serve BHX', they may enter talks with BHX, have no common ground and decide no.

BHX in particular seem to be a bit poor when it comes to negotiations, but MAN has a much better package to offer. Jet Airways offered BHX or MAN their 'Diversion package', in other words, the UK airport of choice when it needs to divert. Guess which airport got it, yup, that other one up the M6. With the 'divert package', means that, whilst not guaranteed, MAN is also more likely to see a dedicated pax service from Jet, due to the fact the ground services are already set up.

Re: Birmingham Airport News 2011

well, I have some news Hassan, Continental/United are down to 5 weekly from November.

Hopefully this now will demonstrate what I mean when I say USA routes dont do well out of BHX.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
