That is very valid. But I think that Emirates and even Qatar would be reluctant to open unprofitable routes: look at Qatar at Cardiff. PIA and Air India were also politically driven, profits a secondary issue. But now the party’s over.

Airports don't allocate slots.... Airlines who want to operate at Slot Constrained Airports apply for slots through Airport Coordination Limited (ACL). I believe it is them who allocate the slots and timing based on what airlines apply for. Obviously the Airlines and Airports negotiate well in advance before this point, but with regard to slots - although I'm happy to be corrected otherwise - the airport has very little say in the matter and the the airport definitely doesn't put any slots in for airlines.

The money is apparently on Dublin for Ethiopian.

I really doubt EDI has the catchment to support it and inbound tourism would be negligible. Major expatriate groups who use these services, such as Nigerians, are in England. I would have thought BHX would do better than EDI.

To be honest did we need another carrier to Delhi?. There are several destinations in India that BHX could make work. Mumbai is an obvious one.

Simple flying states booking data shows MAN-India is around 390,000 passengers a year with BHX-India being 210,000 passengers a year with MAN-DEL being 50% bigger than BHX-DEL with yield being what the call "marginally" better at BHX. Even allowing for surface transport leakage, it does not really explain the large difference in bookings,

If that kind of booking disparity exists in other long-haul markets then you cannot afford to sneer at airlines who DO want to grow out of BHX

This interesting LinkedIn post by an aviation route planner talks about the demand of MAN vs BHX to India and includes some good graphs for comparison.
The author talks about how when taking into account connecting traffic through India, the demand from MAN is 3x size of BHX. With more belly cargo expected from MAN too it makes sense when given the distance from London, MAN is going to see these kind of additions even though BHX is the second largest city.

Lots of rumours but often these things often take a long time to be officially announced, one short haul, one medium haul and one long haul is what I am told !
The work at BHX continues so I think they maybe queues again as we move into 'rolling 12m' record pax numbers by the end of February and indeed about 13.1m by end of March.
Maybe will be happier sitting around the 13.1m-13.4m levels until this building work is complete ?

Strange thing to say but I’m very pleased we have no new flights to USA starting as I can see that it could be a tough time … BUT I do think Canada may be a destination to hope for

As long as that orange man and his madcap side kicks are in power, the US is going to be off limits. TUI were right to pull the plug. It will be interesting to see if EDI can sustain a dozen flights a day this summer.
