When the runway extension opened 11 years ago there was so much talk of flights to the West Coast and Far East Asia.

11 years on, how much has actually changed? I think it's fair that people are a bit peeved.

Hassan you gotta remember bhx is a small airport and leisure minority

Since 11 years ago bhx has had
Emirates Double A380 until Covid
Pakistan airlines
Turkmenistan
Qatar
Air India
Saudia
Turkish widebodys
B747s
Cargo

I do agree with westbound traffic though

All we have is Montego Bay,Punta Cana ,Bridgetown,Cancun and La romana

All of these could of operated from the original length runway

3000m is regarded as a full length runway and although Birmingham is in a difficult position, at least it has the infrastructure in place to enable flights to go further afield. Also what you need to remember is the day to day performance of aircraft will be better from a longer runway. Larger safety margins, reduced power departures and less noise are all benefits of having a longer runway. I would say for BHX and MAN for that matter, the success of the Middle Eastern airlines as connection points only reduces the prospect of more point to point routes except where there maybe a gap in the market.

Do any of them ever start up ? It's no wonder Turkish are doing so well.
Air Sial is pretty established, only issue is they need widebody, as their current fleet is reliant on A320s. Same goes for Airblue however they have 2 A321neos, and PIA with skeleton bone Boeing 777s

I think you misunderstood my comment. I meant since the runway extension.

I'll give you Saudia, Qatar and the A380 but Turkmenistan was already there as was Air India.

The other things on that list, as mentioned, could have easily handled the old runway. 747s too.

The point I'm making is that whatever advantage brought by the runway extension has not really been taken in terms of diversifying the airlines that can fly here.

Hassaan , I have to disagree regarding the runway extension.
We would not have seen A380 or Cargo 747's, fully laden, without the extension. It would have meant restricted range, which is not cost effective to the airline concerned.
I do share your concerns that we are not attracting further long range routes, but i live in hope!.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
