Unfortunately a combination of low cloud and a strong crosswind. Latest met is wind 010 varying 320 to 050 at 18 gusting 30kts. Vis 1600m mist cloud scattered 100ft overcast 200ft.
Now showing gusting 36 knots so the worst combination of low cloud reducing visibility but too strong a cross wind (from the NE) for Cat 3 to be used, yet the RVR is above limits. Quite unusual weather, fortunately, and here in Cookridge the visibility is just fine.

Weird weather not seen this very often in many years flying!

Probably a damp runway too. Its the kind of weather I associate with the Channel Islands.

Jet2 737 300 G-GDFM, positioning from MAN has been holding overhead now for about 2 hours while everything else has been and gone. Weird that our worst weather related diversion event all year is in early September. It really is very odd weather today but forecasting 24c on Friday.

I suppose the busier the airport gets the worse the disruption will be during these events.

Have any other airports suffered today or just LBA?
Fairly sure it's just us. The cloud base seems to be virtually on the floor, so decision height is in the cloud. What's odd is that according to FR24 the wind speed has reduced to 18knts with no gust speeds now given, yet still nothing is landing and most aren't even trying to make an approach. Clearly, Cat 3 is still not an option . Low cloud and a sting cross wind in a damp runway really is a bad combination.

UPDATE.

Jet2 737 300 G-GDFM just rewarded for it's very long hold by landing at 2338. It was in the air 2 hours 13 minutes.
G- GDFK, inbound from Dubrovnik also just landed at 2348 but a Ryanair MAX inbound fro Arrecife is heading for EMA after holding South of LPL.

According to the TAF theres a probability of fog early this evening (6th) until tomorrow 07:00.

Hello all ,I was due to be on the EI 3392 to Dublin and a little drive to Castlebar for work ..

the weather for sure from about 3pm became very windy ... the issue I observed was that poor old Swisport only had a few staff so they were having to deal with one flight at a time ... firstly the EZ then EI .. etc .. I opted to roll the dice and with to see if the diverted EI3392 was going to do the BHX-DUB-LBA-DUB with the LBA-DUB as EI 3395

... by about 8pm it was becoming clear that everything looked like it was going to be cancelled ... bit the bullet .. pulled luggage , taxi to LPL .. new ticket for today with FR to the far side of Ireland and here I am at a hotel in LIverpool :)

High speed fog!!!
Who'd have thought it!

We got down to 200ft minimums and saw absolutely nothing. Tower reported he could see Cookridge tower which was just bizarre!
A Cat3 approach was right on the wind limits. Getting blown around in turbulent air to break fog at 50ft just wasn't safe.

I agree, sounds scary and definitely not worth the risk. An odd 737 landed though so worth a try.

Jet2 have rescheduled its 4x cancelled outbound flights to be operated today as follows

06:05 - EXS291 to Antalya
10:20 - EXS475 to Dalaman
10:45 - EXS477 to Las Palmas
17:00 - EXS441 to Faro

Meanwhile this morning KLM1018 to Amsterdam has operated out of Humberside with the pax bused down the M62/M18/M180

Ryanair will operate last nights delayed inbound RYR474 service from Fuerteventura this afternoon ETA 16:55 as the Leeds based Boeing 737-MAX8, EI-IFX night stopped down route. Boeing 737-800, EI-EMN is covering its duties until then.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
