Even at Manchester I have seen two tugs doing a 737-800, so whilst not ideal, it’s not exactly an issue. Similarly the same happened at Malaga last time I was there. Something else to consider is that not everyone takes hold baggage and not all flights are full, so how often is 4 trolleys actually needed.

Yes and there are holds at the front and the rear of the aircraft. It shouldn't be too big a problem for airlines.

I would say ~70% of Jet2 flights need 4 or more trolleys. Swissport less so.

Two tugs per flight is the standard for Jet2 at Leeds. But if both tugs (and half the turnaround team) are at baggage reclaim, another tug (with outbound bags & replacement staff) is needed to get the a/c loaded on time. Manchester may be equiped for this, but Leeds isn't atm.

Who says Jet2 are not happy? Or are we assuming?
They've raised the lack of tugs issue. If they get more it won't be til next year.

I did raise this as a personal observation though, I don't speak for the company

I did a spell on baggage but being laid off for the winter it was never going to work for me personally. During my spell on baggage, what was apparent in my view was the team work is an integral part of the job and a can do attitude clearly plays a significant roll. During my time, I recall many occasions when only three carts were used but part of the team would go back to the aircraft for remaining bags with a forth cart. I don't forsee this being a problem as such and I am sure the teams will work out a system to ensure it works. Perhaps a holding area might work on the ramp?

They have one near the entrance down to the new belts but it’s been blocked off.

Like @Sputnik1 has mentioned lack of tugs is certainly an issue and having half your team down there tipping can make the turnaround more challenging.

I wonder if the risk of collision with more than three carts was known at the design stage of the extension and could not be overcome, whether it was an oversight only discovered once operations began or whether it was a deliberate design choice?

Remember this is plan B.

At the end of the day, it's not insurmountable. The design will be as it is for a reason and it was of course designed nearly 10 years ago. Jet2 and Swissport will both have to be staffed and equipped in order to deal with it. I'm sure that there will be significant benefits to counter any disadvantages. New belts that are more reliable for one and a more central location is another, plus the separate unloading bays for each belt in the undercroft.

Personally, I can't help thinking back to the days when there were no tugs or dollies. Luggage went on the back of a flat back Karrier Bantam lorry and tugs were ex RAF wartime tractors!

We seem to be going round and round over the same ground with regards to baggage carousels!
I really don't see what the major issue is here. If 3 carts instead of 4 is the biggest concern we have, when we have some shiny new facilities then there is clearly no pleasing some folk, just because it's not 100% perfect.

From the plans belt number 5 and 6 looks like unloading will be done at ground level. Belt number 5 looks possibly larger than the belts loaded from the undercroft.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
