Those of you who didnt live through the 'LACAN years' have no idea how powerful lobbyists can be.

They can be, but they weren't powerful enough last time as we submitted 17000 letters of support to their 4000 and they lost and were disbanded. Their organisers at that time are no longer around and times have changed as have the aircraft and attitude towards flying. Back then, LACAN had the ear of Leeds City Council whose policy tended to be anti airport. Today their policy is to support the airport and they recently dismissed the sit in, glue on, or whatever it was that Extinction Rebellion did at their planning meeting.

However - if a new version of LACAN emerges and they win the argument, those of us who support the airport can't complain if we have sat on our hands and done nothing. Letters of support to the Council are required and we need to preach/beg/do whatever is necessary to get friends and relatives to do the same, even if we write the letter for them and then just ask them to sign it.

I really think the airport needs to have points in arrivals and departures detailing the proposals with cards so passengers can submit their support. Maybe QR codes as well to offer people a different way in supporting. Members of the airport could man the points to answer questions.

Totally agree Aviador. I have already emailed the LCC leader expressing my wholehearted support for the plans but think an opportunity for travelling passengers to register their support through the provision of a terminal based register point is a great idea.

Although any positive communication with Leeds City council is welcome I understand it may not count unless it is directed to the planning department after the plans have formally been submitted.

I have already written to LBA management explaining how we secured the support we did in the 90s ands suggesting the airport consider ways to collect support at their various consultation events (and possibly within the terminal where they have lots of LBA using bored passengers). I am not sure if a register would be accepted by the council or not. We had loads and loads of pre printed statements of support around the terminal with post boxes alongside for them to be deposited in. All supporters of the airport had to do was complete their name, address, signature and date. They counted and were all acknowledged. I have had a positive response from the airport and they are looking into their options. If they do collect signatures via consultation events, they may have to wait until after the planning application is formally submitted before they send them into the council - a point I have also raised with LBA.

I think the airport will certainly need to do something. I think the link road would be still going ahead if the airport had got involved and done something similar for that. Unfortunately the anti airport brigade are a vociferous bunch and they will group together to fight to stop any new development associated with the airport. On the other hand, those that support the airport, the silent majority will just sit back as they see the proposal as final and they think it's job done.

Those forms might have been in the airport, but they weren't produced by the airport ls27, they were produced by me with help from the airport. They were also put in a number of travel agents mainly in the areas local to the airport.

Yes they did that and then I went with my mate Chris up there in the evening every week, had a drink in the bar and then when the airport closed we went around the terminal collecting them from the collection boxes, accompanied by one of the airport security guys. Fun times.

The real test will be the feedback from those directly effected on the flight path for the proposed night hours extension.

Looks like we may now have some serious competition on the Belfast and Dublin routes, as both routes have just been announced up at Teesside. Multiple frequencies mentioned. No operator stated yet.

Eastern Airways will be the new operator from MME apparently with 3x based aircraft. Destinations are:
Aberdeen - already served multiple daily
Southampton - up to 2x daily
London City - up to 2x daily
Belfast City - 6x weekly
Dublin - 6x weekly
Cardiff - 5x weekly flights
Isle of Man - seasonal

All Eastern Airways flights are booked through Flybe.

Anyway If I'm really been honest some of them new routes from Teeside won't last long especially what with Eastern Airways high fares.

Also this could be politically motivated decision.
The reason I say this is because it was only last month that the Prime Minister promised better UK regional air connectivity if he won the general election for the Consertives.
So which party just won quite a few ex Labour held seats in the area with lots of promises & which party is the current Mayor of Tees Valley, Ben Houchen a member of?
Oh I see his also up for a re-election this summer. So it's Win win all around until it all goes belly up.
