OK competition time. How many typos or mistakes can you find on the new exhibit banners? I found at least 2 when I looked at them on Monday but I am not going to say which at this stage. Very good exhibit though I have to say.

Interesting articual appeared on the TTG website today. It looks like LBA and Jet2 have wrote a letter to the Chancellor, George Osborne to ask for Air Passenger Duty (ADP) to be reduced for flights leaving from airports outside London and the south east.

Plea for regional reductions on APD

21 October 2011 | By Rob Gill

Jet2.com and Leeds Bradford Airport have written a joint letter to chancellor George Osborne to ask for Air Passenger Duty to be reduced for flights leaving from airports outside London and the south east.

The airline’s managing director Ian Doubtfire and John Parkin, chief executive of Leeds Bradford, said the decision to reduce APD on flights from Northern Ireland should “pave the way” for similar reductions from the UK regions.

“We have long argued APD has a disproportionate impact on the regions outside of London and the South East; including regions that rely on crucial lifeline air services,” read the letter.

“Regional airports and airlines have a lower percentage of business travellers or inbound tourists with a high propensity to fly than the London airports, and have been hit hard by economic downturn.

“That’s not just bad news for our businesses. It’s bad for jobs, bad for inward investment and bad for wealth creation in the UK regions.”

Doubtfire and Parkin also urge Osborne to scrap the “one-size-fits-all” approach to APD during his autumn statement in November.

“We believe the government should provide economic incentives to encourage airlines to make better use of those regional airports where capacity is available.

“A ‘congestion charge’ on the busiest London airports, or a lower rate outside of London, could have a transformational impact in terms of protecting key routes and attracting new ones.”

two thoughts that should fit in to the 'general thread', firstly regarding APD we have some friends hoping to come over at Christmas from the USA, there are 5 of them so they have a budget of $3000. They can get to Dublin for just over $3000 but to come to any mainland airport is over $3500 - out of their reach. The worst bit is though that to travel from Dublin to either Leeds or manchester with a certain Irish airline is going to cost them approx 210 euros fare and another 250 euros in tax!! Scandalous.

Secondly, I dropped my other half off yesterday lunchtime for the Exeter flight, feeling peckish I decided to go up the escalator to Burger King. Fool. With only two other customers in front of me I turned round and walked out after 10 minutes waiting. How they ever get any trade is beyond me. Does anyone know whether they will be retained after the terminal revamp? If they are then a definite kick up the a*** is required!!

Plea for regional reductions on APD

Interesting and good luck to them. Is there anyway us mere mortals could support such a plea bearing in mind that time would be of the essence if Osborne were to be persuaded?

I know there is much disquiet about the proposed APD increases but I haven't seen anywhere what the actual impact, ie cost, would be on the majority of flights leaving LBA. Has anyone got details?

I have just been looking at the photos on the airport website which are there to celebrate the 80th birthday. It is nice to see them and for me it brings back a few memories going back to the 60's. It is so disappointing though to see so many errors in the years shown against the photos.

The photos of the 70's are almost all wrong. The picture of the outside of the terminal taken from the apron is labelled circa 1974. It is much later as the aircraft in the picture is an Air UK F27. In the early 70's we were only just beginning to see Air Anglia, who I believe were later subsumed into Air UK, whilst also in the 70's the tower did not have the lower deck (which was built on later) and the terminal only had the red posts fitted along the outside in the 80's when the building was extended.

The internal photo labelled 1976 is also at least a 1980's shot, also featuring Air UK and Capital check in desks. The allegedly 1977 shot of the inside of the tower is also completely wrong as it shows what appears to be a DC9-30 taking off and they didn't feature either until the 80's. I am not convinced that the 1981 photo of the runway extension is right either - the extension is already taking shape and it didn't open until 4th November 1984. It didn't take 3 years to build. The 4th November 1984 was also the first time a Wardair 747 landed - not 1986 as stated in the later photo.

Finally the 1994 photo of the Britannia 757 states 'runway extension allows 24 hour operations' which is nonsensical. The runway extension was 1984 - and 24 hours didn't arrive until 1994. The two are in no way connected.

Overall this looks like a half hearted slap dash attempt which many will see as inaccurate. There are so many people around that they could have asked, just to check the dates if they didn't know, but it looks as though they really didn't bother to check their facts and that they hoped nobody would notice!!

I'm afraid it is common in life generally where people do not check that they have something correct before publishing. You can allow the odd mistake but the number you have highlighted is far too many.

For those that missed the Lancaster-Bomber and Euro fighter fly-by's last Thursday lunchtime to celebrate the airport's 80th anniversary the Telegraph & Argus News paper in Bradford have a great video and story of it on there website now.

For some reason it wont allow me to add the video to this site..

The Video can be viewed here on the newspapers website: http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co....rd_International_Airport_anniversary/?ref=rss

Old bomber wings in for Leeds-Bradford International Airport anniversary

1805834

Two iconic aircraft took to the skies to mark an airport’s 80th birthday.

A historic Lancaster bomber and RAF Typhoon flew over Leeds- Bradford International Airport (LBIA) to mark the site’s landmark birthday yesterday.

Four men representing the famous 609 Squadron, which was based at the airfield during World War Two, were on hand to see the planes tear through the sky.

John Parkin, chief executive of LBIA, said: “It is a privilege to be able to involve the members and relatives of Squadron 609 in our 80th anniversary celebrations.

“The Lancaster bomber is part of our rich history. The fly-over at such low level was a magnificent spectacle for our guests, our staff, passengers and local residents.”

The flypasts were part of a week-long celebration of the airport’s anniversary, from humble beginnings as the Yeadon Aerodrome in 1931 to a terminal employing more than 2,000 people with millions of passengers flying to 24 different countries every year.

There is a Facebook campaign growing in strength to rename LBA after the late Sir Jimmy Savile  http://www.facebook.com/***23343475 ... 616708376/

[hi-lighty:1s4hxubd]Question:[/hi-lighty:1s4hxubd] How would the world function without social networking sights?

[hi-lighty:1s4hxubd]Answer:[/hi-lighty:1s4hxubd] Much better!

For non locals the location of the long winded Leeds Bradford International Airport is a mystery. They would be even more confused if it became Sir Jimmy Saville International Airport. The mind boggles.

Was Sir Jimmy a regular user of LBA?

Even though he is a much-loved icon in this country I doubt that he is well known abroad so naming the airport after him might cause confusion.

I'm not in favour of naming airports after people anyway.

I also empathise with the antipathy towards social networking sites. Although I took to the Internet earlier than many of my generation (over ten years ago - I'm a war baby albeit born towards the end of the conflict, WW II that is) I've never joined the likes of Facebook or Twitter and don't suppose I ever shall.

I don't think Sir Jimmy was ever a regular user of the airport. If I'm honest, I don't recall ever seeing him at the airport over the last decade or so. So far as Facebook goes, I'm not a huge fan of it myself either. I don't like the idea of every man and his dog knowing my personal business. The other half uses it but she's got a few friends else where in the country so I guess it's good for things like that. The call to rename the airport can be nothing more than that anyway. The Leeds and Bradford councils have a 'special' share in the airport which insists the airport name remains the same. That is unless the councils vote to remove the clause.

What is it with this trend of naming airports after people in the UK. Can the airports not get enough publicity without piggybacking off the fame of someone else?

Liverpool John Lennon Airport? Please!
Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield? Its a ridiculously long name than no one ever says fully!
Leeds Jimmy Saville Bradford airport- Its even worse than the DSA name.

Dont get me wrong, Jimmy sounds like he was a lovely, good natured guy, but lets not tacky-fy his name on an airport, its just wrong.

The only ones that seem to work named after people are the classy ones:

New York John F Kennedy- There are 3 airports in the NYC Vicinity, so, JFK stands out. JFK is also its IATA code so it works well.

Toronto Pearson. Works well, and again, with City and Hamilton airport nearby, it helps distinguish itself from its neighbours.

Give me back Liverpool Airport any day, and while were at it, revert DSA to just Doncaster airport, its no where near bloody Sheffield! If it really needs a second name, Doncaster Finningly sounds much better and reverts back to its air force days, Like Leeds does with Yeadon, Manchester does with Ringway and London does with Heathrow.

Sorry to change the subject so abruptly.

I don't know if anyone has seen these, but LBA has a new YouTube Channel.

There seem to be a few videos of the airport which try and advertise the airport to a diverse range of passengers.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/LeedsBradfordAirport

Not sure whether to thank you or not for that pointer tomleeds!

Pretty naff was my first, second and third thoughts!

Change of direction in posting and an unusual one from me, but I can understand why some people get frustrated with excess noise from the airport (every now and again). For the past ten minutes a very noisy propeller based aircraft has been circling over Cookridge (Moseley Woods area), it is so loud that it actually drowns out my TV when it passes. I'm sure that if there are operating noise limits for aircraft that this particular one must be on the cusp of it. It's also quite unusual at this time of evening, particularly in the dark. It sounds like it's half knackered to be honest! :diablo:

Hi Galaxy

There are no noise limitations on prop aircraft - they are not even recorded when it comes to noise limits and although the airport has to keep records of noise issues, that is only for jet aircraft.Prop aircraft are classed as 'noise exempt'. From my experience though, a lot of the local complaints regarding noise are relating to prop aircraft doing circuits. There is a restriction on height, but not on decibels and the usual answer given is that they are in the hold for ATC reasons, awaiting clearance to make an approach - usually due to several commercial aircraft being on approach and taking priority,

What you are supposed to do though is turn the TV off and rush outside to watch the noisy beast flying around, even if it is dark out there!

Believe me, when we get that on the radio's we don't half moan, as we know it can last upto half hour just round & round & round ............

still going round.
and round - YOU GET MY POINT. These locals do annoy me though "we had a plane take off at twenty past six this morning god it was noisey" ... first of all it was for 10/20 seconds, secondly you've lived here for how many years, and you still MOAN, and thirdly you knew were the airport is/was, why choose if all you do is moan? Where i live, sound of a RR 757 at 7am is well nice alarm.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
