Just wished we could attract an international airline such as United Airlines for flights to the states... That would really be a significant step for the airport.

Sadly more chance of the other local United winning the Premier League.

I just wished Leeds seriously considered a new airport at Stourton... Excellent transport links, plenty of room for car parks, rail stations etc.

We'd have some beast airlines coming in then !!

I'm sure LBA could become BRA overnight quite easily.

Is Stourton even big enough for an airport? It would be on the HS2 route, possibly even infringing it?

They could always tunnel HS2 under a new airport, which would be slap bang next the M1 and also local rail services to Wakefield, Castleford, Barnsley and Sheffield. Could be the Boris Island of the North.

Personally I don't think Stourton would be any use at all for an airport. For starters it is in an area prone to flooding and wetlands, with a river and a canal and a sewage works. Secondly it is in a low lying area with hills to the West (Belle Isle/Middleton) and to the East (Temple Newsam, Halton etc), which would the direction of the runway (unless of course it was built once again in the wrong direction). There are also hills to the South (Rothwell). So once again we would have issues with glideslopes. Being next to the River Aire and Aire and Calder navigation and in a hollow means it is also prone to low lying fog - another type of fog to that LBA suffers from, but fog is fog. Altogether, not a good idea - sorry.

If LBA was to be moved, then the ideal location would be in the vicinity of the junction between the M1 and A1, not far from Garforth. It is also very close to the East Coast mainline there so it would be simple to build a spur to the airport - and it is also close to the HS2 route and fairly central to serve Yorkshire generally. Its never going to happen though in my lifetime. I would be happy to be proved wrong.

Well I have to say that the LBA arrivals board looks pretty damn good today, ie;

British Airways
Eastern Airways
FlyBe
KLM
Ryanair
Jet2
Monarch
Thomson
Aer Lingus
SAS

That's 4 national carriers!!

Yes, shame it will soon be down to 3 :aggressive:

Could've been 6 if PIA were still here. It just goes to show the industry is still in a very fragile state.

I see the management at Leeds/Bradford Airport along with 4 other UK airports (Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle & Liverpool) have sent a letter to the Davis Commission supporting London Heathrow bid for a 3rd runway.

Source: http://www.travelweekly.co.uk/Articles/ ... nsion.html

Full text of the letter from the UK airports to Sir Howard Davies:

Dear Sir Howard,

The so-called London Airports debate is not about London at all. It is about the aviation industry as a whole – an industry that employs 960,000 people – boosting growth across the UK and contributing £52bn to the UK economy. Airports are an integral part of local economies; our growth generates growth in our regions.

We are continually looking to grow our route networks – by starting new routes to airports in cities and countries that are destinations in their own right, and by connecting to hub airports to allow our passengers to transfer on to a wider variety of long-haul destinations. But the UK’s hub airport, Heathrow, is full. This is limiting the slots available for domestic routes and onward connections, and limiting choice for our passengers.

The health of the UK aviation industry is not about the success of one airport, but the success of all our airports, each performing a vital role. Heathrow’s role is as the UK’s hub, one of only six worldwide with more than 50 long haul routes and expansion there would create over 200,000 more slots. For expansion to benefit the whole country there must be a mechanism in place to strengthen and secure domestic connections to the UK’s hub. We will be backing Heathrow expansion in the Airports Commission consultation as the right choice for the whole of the UK.

Yours sincerely,

Carol Benzie, Managing Director, Aberdeen International Airport
Amanda McMillan, Managing Director, Glasgow Airport
John Parkin, CEO, Leeds Bradford International Airport
Andrew Cornish, CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport
David Laws, CEO, Newcastle Airport

Not exactly LBA related but is aviation news in the vicinity. I have read online that after being on the market for a few months, former RAF Church Fenton has now been provisionally sold (the article stated that an offer had been accepted). No details appear to have been released yet, but it will be interesting to see if the site remains aviation focused, and if so, to what extent.

I am told a local business man has purchased the site and is looking to make it the general aviation centre of the North.

I see Ken Cothliff is on the box today featuring as a contestant on the BBC programme "Flog It" currently showing on BBC1

Not Multiflight but this person is pretty dynamic !! Might create a problem if I pass on too much as I am not sure who is supposed to know.

Sorry to correct you Aviador, but was "Bargain Hunt". I have been trying to get on it for a while. It is one of the few daytime tv programmes we watch.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
