Purely a rumour, but I heard that Sherburn to close for housing so would all their ops move to Church Fenton???

I am a member of Sherburn Aero Club and have two aircraft based there and as far as I know there are no plans for closure. Having spoken to the club to renew my membership last week I would have expected to have been informed if this was the case. The guy who owns the land has just had his 90th birthday and the club had a party and presentation for him.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my airport gave to me...five new routes....four based Ryanairs, 3 new stands, Cat 2 on 14 and a rail link into Leeds!!

Happy Christmas everyone!!

Nice to see someone full of Christmas cheer Bigman. It's a little early for the hot toddies though isn't it?

Happy Christmas everyone all the same and may all of your wishes come true.

A very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone on Forums4Airports -and hopefully something good for all of us at LBA.

Heather

Can I add my best wishes for the festive season to all on the forum and hope white heather is correct and we have some good news to make us all happy in the New Year.

Record Breaking Year at Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds, UK – 29th December 2014 Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is pleased to announce that 2014 was a record breaking year, when passenger numbers exceeded 3.3 million for the first time in the airport’s 83 year history.
Leeds Bradford has also played an important role in 2014, supporting growth and raising the profile of the Leeds City Region alongside improving worldwide connectivity for business and leisure passengers. Now flying to 70 destinations and with direct flights to 23 countries with 10 major airlines, LBA is increasingly being chosen as the airport gateway of Yorkshire.

The main highlights of 2014 at Leeds Bradford Airport have been:

  • LBA celebrates becoming ‘Best UK Airport’ at the Globe Travel Awards in London.
  • Eastern Airways introduces direct flights to Southampton from LBA.
  • Seven new summer 2014 destinations for leisure travellers commence with Jet2 and Ryanair.
  • LBA announces that passenger numbers have exceeded 3.3 million for the first time as the airport becomes one of the fastest growing airports in the UK.
  • Robert Goodwill, the new Transport Minister, visits LBA to discuss improving transport links to LBA.
  • Flybe announces new ‘Flybe Shuttle’ flights linking Leeds Bradford with Jersey, Southampton and Aberdeen.
  • The airport celebrates with the rest of Yorkshire as overseas tourist visitors fly into LBA to watch the ‘Grand Départ’ of the Tour De France.
  • LBA confirms £1.2m investment in terminal improvements ready for the peak holiday season.
    September
  • Aer Lingus announces their return after 14 years, linking LBA with Dublin and offering excellent flight connections to the USA and Canada.
  • Monarch Airlines, Thomson and Jet2 announce new destinations for Summer 2015, flying to Alicante, Antalya, Corfu, Kefalonia, Malta, Naples and Tunisia.

LBA works with other UK airports and alongside the Airport Operators Association campaign to secure a reduction in the level of Air Passenger Duty (APD) for children under 12 years of age, providing cheaper holidays and flights for Summer 2015.December British Airways celebrates the 250,000th passenger flying on the London Heathrow route, linked to the second anniversary of BA flights to Terminal 5.

Tony Hallwood Leeds Bradford Airports' Aviation Development Director commented: '' 2014 has been a milestone year for Leeds Bradford and one which has seen a range of airlines and services introduced. We would like to thank all our passengers for choosing to fly locally and conveniently from Yorkshire’s gateway airport.'

That's strange given the fact that according to the November CAA stats, we are down 1.5% for the rolling year. That means we have not had our busiest year ever as they seem to state.

Just as well they don't mention all the routes we have lost!!

Anyone seeing a reduction in airfares due to oil prices dropping?
Looking at 2016 prices they seem very high compared to this years prices. Admit only Jet2 to look at as guide. But June 2015 dont seem to have moved for anyone.

I saw something yesterday stating that airfares will not drop for between 6 to 9 months due to the airlines buying all their fuel on the futures markets although in the same interview the guy said loco's may drop things earlier

I believe that to be true. I think the process is called Hedging - where airlines buy their fuel at a given price for a given period in advance. This has, in the past, enabled them to not increase fares to the degree they might otherwise have done, when oil prices have soared, and it works both ways. Many of the airlines will be using fuel today that they paid for some time ago at higher prices. Its a bit like a fixed rate mortgage - you win some or, like me, you lose some!

Looks like Monarch Airline are the early benefactors of the cheaper oil prices. As it looks like they had to renegotiated there fuel hedging after the recent take over by Graybull Capital.

Lucky' Monarch predicts profits after oil slump

getAsset.aspx

Monarch is due to reveal on January 29 how it has fared in its first 100 days since new owners, investment firm Greybull, rescued it from collapse.
The airline has met November and December’s passenger and revenue targets and is on track to be profitable this year, according to Monarch Group chief executive Andrew Swaffield.
The collapsing oil price means that Monarch, which unwound its fuel hedge positions when it agreed its rescue deal, now has the lowest fuel costs of all its European peers.

I spoke to an old friend today who is a Thomson B787 Captain. I asked how he would feel about bringing such an aircraft to Leeds.
He has landed here several times in the past in a Boeing 757 and worked here on the ground for several years before his flying career began so knows the place pretty well. His comment was he would not see Lbia as a suitable airport to operate into with the limitations it has at present and doubted if any other operator would do so either.
Sums up the situation for me and makes the hoped for new technology aircraft types allowing long haul destination to be undertaken highly unlikely.

Which I am sorry to say points back to one of two options. Either sort out the available runway length and the associated glide path issues or look for an alternative airfield.

Seen as we don't have a dedicated Charter flights page any more for LBA (mainly due to lack of them now-a-days) I guess it worth posting this bit of news on this thread. It's looking like Joe Walsh Tours will once again be organising this years annual Leeds Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from Leeds/Bradford as booking are now been taken.

Outbound flight departs Leeds Friday, July 3rd and returns Thursday, July 9th. No flight timings have been issued yet, also I don't know which airline will be operating this year. Past few years has seem them been operated by Titan Airways.

These flights to Lourdes used to provide the aircraft highlight of the year, usually a wide body.
I remember frequent visits of Air Ops TriStars and Air Atlanta 747's. Sadly a thing of the past unless we get an A330/767 maybe?

I see the SAS advert has been removed from the billboard by the tunnel, but does anyone else thinks its replacement is misleading? For those who havent seen it, it is promoting Dubai as a winter holiday destination from LBA.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
