Why would a triple bogey undercarriage tear up the concrete LBAspotter? I am not arguing the point, but just curious. We have had DC10's, L1011's and 747's at LBA in the past which have central undercarriage bogeys and they didn't do any damage. That concrete is pretty hard!

The Wardair 747's turned round on the circle at the Horsforth end and didn't have follow me vehicles either. I would have thought that a 777-200 is shorter than a 747, so why would that be necessary now?

Heather it’s not the size that's the issue! It’s the extended length combined with a triple axle bogey that scrubs the concrete on big turns, The aircraft's tires rub and in the process it rips up the concrete. I think Manchester Airport found this problem in the past and learnt the hard way. I understand it takes a lot of infrastructure improvements to accept the Boeing 777-300's. Not that it matters in Leeds/Bradford's case seen as they wont be coming here anyway as we will be Boeing 777-200 operated. Maybe are Manchester regular User001 might able to add to this??

Also if I remember correctly am sure I've read somewhere, I think it was in one of the Air Side Safety Bulletins or on the original NOTAM that stated LBA was able to accept Boeing 777-200 sized aircraft but they will require a follow me vehicle.

The majority of the taxiway and runway surfaces at Manchester are tarmac not concrete so I doubt LBA would suffer from the same problems as the majority of the surfaces at Leeds are concrete.

Like I said in me last post the subject regarding the concrete been ripped up doesn’t really matter at the moment seen as PIA are going to be using the Boeing 777-200's which is a lot shorter So it won’t be an issue for LBA, Well that’s unless its bigger sister the Boeing 777-300's ever turned up unexpectedly!

Can anyone be so kind to explain all this triple axle bogey and such, i thought i had an idea as to what it was, but now i'm completely clueless.

Also the 200ER landing gear and 300 landing gear look the same to me.

Thanks

Does it really matter how many wheels this has, all that matters is we are getting a T7 at LBA, and well done to LBA management for pulling this off

The 200/300 gear is the same visually anyway.

A triple axle bogey is simply three pairs of wheels in a row on one gear. The 777 aircraft has 6 wheels on each of the main landing gear with the usual 2 on the forward gear.

737's/A320's single bogey gear (2 wheels each on the main gear)
757's/767's/A330's double bogey gear (4 wheels each on the the main gear)
777's triple bogey gear (6 wheels on the main gear)

The 777 will not be allowed to taxi along taxiway November (the old 27-09 runway) as the surface cannot take the weight of the aircraft. It will always have to use taxiway Delta even when landing on runway 32 or departure from 14 so a long back track will be needed. The 777 can only park on stand's 14, 21 or 23 with 14 being the prefered stand so the passengers can walk off the aircraft.

The full length back-track when runway 32 is in use for landing or departing from 14 will be a serious headache for ATC come the busy month's of the summer!!

Good news for LBA :hatsoff:

thank you that's what I thought originally but I got confused with everything that was said.

At least one thing though it will keep atc awake when the 777 is in and make the pilots work for there money getting that aircraft in and about!!!

This could be a good thing for LBA in terms of a diversion airport for the 777s when they can't land at MAN

Good news guys and it has now been officially confirmed that PIA are starting Boeing 777 flights into LBA as from March 13th 2013.

Pakistan International Airlines to introduce B777 on Leeds–Bradford route

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is to introduce a Boeing 777 on direct flights from Leeds Bradford (LBA) to Islamabad from March 13.

PIA said it was introducing the aircraft due to the “high demand from travellers in Bradford and the surrounding Yorkshire region” who want to fly to Pakistan.

The airline will introduce the aircraft on the existing twice weekly LBA schedule on a Wednesday and Saturday, previously served by a A310.

Tony Hallwood, commercial director at LBA, said: “We have been working closely with the local community and businesses to introduce Boeing 777 operations at LBA.

“We are now delighted that we have been able to secure this important PIA flagship service to meet the growing demand.”

Pakistan International Airline’s manager at Leeds Bradford, Muhammad Shafique, added: “This is excellent news for Leeds Bradford and the entire region that we serve, confirming our confidence in LBA’s status as Yorkshire’s premier international gateway for our customers.

“With the upgraded facilities available on the Boeing 777 for both business and leisure travel, alongside a competitive fare, we are confident that more Yorkshire passengers will decide to fly with PIA.”

PIA is the only airline to serve Islamabad from the UK, and also flies from Manchester, Birmingham and London Heathrow.

Slight lie in the article there, however.

PIA are not the only airline to fly to Islamabad from the UK.

Oh well, try and dissuade any potential passengers by misleading them that PIA are their only option, don't blame them, got to try all the tricks in the book when your up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

May I add its fantastic news we've had confirmation of the 777 from March 13th. Further to this I am so happy to be freelancing for a regional broadcaster around the time so hope the airport put a press conference on and positive coverage of the late afternoon arrival!

Sadly I expect a small proportion of the public will no doubt raise their concerns after March 13th, the usual too big... noisy... polluting e.c.t.

Well the 777 is supposed to be quieter than the A310 as it is below the noise limit for night flying and will not incur the wrath of Leeds City Planning if it departs after 2330 hrs.

I just did a bit of digging for information...

LBA runway 14/32 length = 2250m
777-200 take-off distance at MTOW = 2530m

Am I missing something?

Max weight departures will not happen as it would mean they would be limited on payload and most likely require a tech stop enroute. The good news is that seen as Islamabad is nowhere near max range of the Boeing 777 this shouldn’t be an issue so it will be able to remain a non-stop service..
PIA's Boeing 777-200ER and 777-200LRs have the more powerful GE90 on them. The 200ERs have 94K the LRs 110K, So they will have plenty of thrust to get them of the ground and in fact should take-off like a rocket to be honest with you. Hope that helps.

Yes, what you are missing is the aircraft can fly much further than ISB so it wont be departing at maximum take off weight.

At long last our patients is going to be rewarded, i for one cannot wait to see this beautiful aircraft grace our regional airport, lets hope its not just for a few months and that it encourages other large aircraft back to LBIA
well done PIA and LBIA for all their hard work 😉

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
