Well I just got to work in Goole and at 0830 in the morning it's 28 degrees Celsius! Was this hot yesterday afternoon!

What was once described as a heatwave is now described as "Severe Heat". What was once decribed as Climate Change is now described as a "Climate Emergency". Once a record temperature high was described as"since records began", now they are described as "hottest EVER". Once forest fires were started by silly people now they're "caused by the heat" according to the BBC. I'm not going to discuss my views on this as we're not allowed here but I think you can tell where I'm going with this.

As for forrest fires again it comes back to my point earlier. We know this warm weather is coming so why don't we go out to moorland and out to forests to ensure the ground is sufficiently damp enough to cope with the heat. IE Not dry. Instead we stand on amazed.

Interesting that around Hull it was warmer on the left than right, Midlands/Manchester warmer on left then right, and in Norwich warmer on the left then right.

How do you propose to do that? It would drain our already lowering reservoir water supplies before we had covered even a fraction of the land. Sea water is unsuitable due to the amount of salt.

Not entirely sure that's possible but BBQs and leaving litter will be the overall leading causes of most forest or moorland fires.

Yes, we should take care of out forests and moorlands, but as Aviador says -

I would add to that, smoking. Even broken glass can start a fire in tinder dry conditions Take only photographs and leave only footprints.

We simply don't have the resources. The only effective way of covering vast areas of land would be by water bombing, for which we don't have the fleet of aircraft required, or the water reserves to cope. Fighting the fires is cheaper and a more efficient use of resources than dousing vast amounts of land with water. The fires may look large, but are in fact quite localised in comparison to the total land area. Most forest/moorland fires are easily preventable. It just requires common sense from the general public.

I agree with the article on the whole other than I don't think I would "enjoy" walking miles in 37'c heat. Plonk me by the poolside bar and your talking.

In a garden with a BBQ, a beer garden with water to aid and some shade. And yes. I agree. I didn’t read the walking part.

After a morning inside, with windows and curtains closed, I had to walk to the local shops - less than 10 mins away - and I can't recall it feeling so hot before, even when in Caribbean, Far East or East Africa. Temperature for both MAN , LPL was 35 and the slight breeze could only be described as hot. I could feel the heat coming off the pavement and the odd parked car.

On my journey home from North Liverpool, the temperature was recording 37.5c for the duration on my 40 mins or so drive.

At one point by Halifax my truck registered 40c on the dash and another driver i used to work with his truck said 42.5 and he had to try and get to sleep in that with no overnight aircon.

The trouble with vehicle temperature measurements is they are measuring heat of the road. Not only that the car will also have an influence as that will also be warm. So whilst uncomfortable and yes we've not seen these temps for a while equally it's only the road temp that we are reporting.

Still bloody hot and still unbearable to try and sleep in and in my experience not so long ago these temperatures in the summer were in the early thirties and late 20s not late 30s and early 40s. One of the reasons why I gave up tramping was because it was becoming more and more unbearable to sleep in the nights in a truck during summer. It's not good for people's health let alone the safety aspect of getting no sleep. Hopefully eventually it'll become law that all trucks have to have an overnight cooling unit like it is in the Mediterranean countries.

That's incorrect. Accurate temperature measurement of the air is vital to allow efficient combustion and for the catalytic converter to work efficiently in modern cars (and can be accurate to within 1/2 or 1/3 of a degree C). The wrong fuel/air mixture can 'poison' the expensive metals used in the converter. When first setting off, the temperature may read erroneously (especially if the car has been in the sun), but will rapidly change to measuring the temperature of the air that is being taken in by the engine, as the thermometer is specifically located to avoid errors such as hot road surfaces (modern cars have an 'under tray' below the engine to help with this). It is this temperature measurement that is presented on the dashboard to the driver.

That's incorrect.

The temp been on the road versus in someone’s back garden will be different. That’s due to other factors, traffic and the heat given off the tarmac itself. The air temps will still be different.
