It says demolish the old terminal, my opinion would be that includes the tower a new one would have to be built, I want to know how strict is leeds city councils planning is, and are they been optimistic in saying the hope to begin construction later this year!

If the new terminal is to be nearer the parkway station then that's a big incentive that would shut up the gretas and please LCC. so where the current terminal, car parks,drop off area is now might well be apron space in the future. So it does look like we will be getting our MASSIVE news after all and this is definitely a much better start to the year!

Although we can only take this at face value there are a couple of alternative ways of looking at this:

1. New proposal announced in the knowledge that any new planning permission could well take a long time and may never ultimately get the OK. This could be preferable AMP announcing that the 'current' plans/spending have been shelved as the blame will rest with the council planning process.

2. Could be intended to make the council sit up and re-consider the decision on the link road and a direct link to the airport, after all 7m pax is too much for the current infrastructure and by announcing such a major investment really makes 7m seem more realistic.

I think the 150million will include the construction of new apron, control tower, the geography of the land etc and not just the cost of the new terminal.

I think in all fairness this won't have been cheap together so if AMP were lining up a vision destined to failure then they wouldn't have gone to the expense of this and getting the Aviation minister on board - one assumes this is to put pressure in the right places.

Intersting thought... All of the prior analysis for a direct rail link was done based on location of the existing terminal.

The new terminal is on much lower ground and much closer to the existing rail line.

Could it be that a shorter distance and lower gradient make a direct spur more viable now? Must be worth the council looking at...

It would also impact far less on existing Harrogate services.

Thanks goodness LBA have announced this now, ahead of the Consultative Meeting, which I may as well now tell you is next Monday. I had heard from an airport employee before Christmas that the discussions within the airport suggested a new terminal and for once, it turns out not to be just rumour. This news is, indeed, massive. For an airport the size of LBA, £150m is a large amount not only a huge investment by AMP, it is also a vote of confidence in the airport, its future, and what they expect to achieve. No way would they have done this without having some positive vibes from other airlines. I hope now that those who have had a lot of negative things to say about AMP and the airport directors will accept that far from doing nothing much, they are actually doing a lot to try and push this airport forward.

Previously, AMP worked in conjunction with Leeds City Council with regard to the design and planning so that approval was given pretty quickly and there is nothing to suggest they won't have done the same again this time. I guess we will find out more on Monday. It will be interesting to see the initial reactions that come from the council leaders although I would be amazed if they don't already know about this.

I imagine that the new terminal would be built below what is now the Eastern apron and on what is the long stay car park as the lie of the land will enable them to build up from the ground to apron level. It will also be less obvious at ground level, tucked in behind the apron and much less conspicuous. If the existing terminal is then to be demolished, there is then clearly the scope to extend the apron at the NW end (where the terminal is now) so that the entire apron is in a straight line. As for the control tower, my money would be on it being built on the South Side or where the existing terminal is now.

This is going to be huge test of resolve for Leeds Council. If they don't approve this, we may as well give up and go home - and the same applies to AMP. It is what LBA has needed for years and years. It will give the airport a terminal we can at last be proud of. Although the NIMBYS will invent all sorts of reasons (all now under the global warming banner) why it shouldn't go ahead (what odds they claim the airport shouldn't expand as the road network isn't good enough?????), approval has already been given by the council for a terminal extension to take passenger numbers up to 7m per year, and this new terminal is designed to do just the same. It isn't as though they are now going for 10m! So in reality, the only real change over what has already been approved, is the building itself. It would be crazy to say no and condemn LBA to a future with a totally hopeless terminal. The council just have to resist the complaints that will undoubtedly come - and those of us who are in favour will need to make voices heard. What isn't required is 'all talk, no action' by airport supporters. So letters of support from you guys to Leeds City Council are required, along with attendance and positive reactions at the inevitable consultation events.

That won't work AirBingley. You will need to write and advise the council of your support in person - and by the way (for all those who don't live in Leeds), it doesn't matter where you live. The council still have to log your support.

Hopefully, if Leeds City Council start playing silly beggars the new Government, committed to supporting the North, can exert considerable pressure on them financially given the promised future handouts for the North for infrastructure projects.
