I would say that today's announcement by Virgin Atlantic regarding setting up a UK domestic carrier operating Airbus A319 aircraft X3 daily between London-Heathrow and Manchester with the possibility of routes to Edinburgh and Aberdeen next summer may well be a reaction to Virgin Trains losing the West Coast Mainline franchise to First group last week.

Its good to see that a UK Airline like Virgin is now ready to go up against the monopoly that British Airways now has on UK domestic/feeder services into London since taking over bmi british midland as it should help keep costs down.

Good point regarding the West Coast Mainline. It's good to see the resurgence of domestic air travel through the London airports and it comes as no surprise with all the recent hikes in rail fares. We keep being told fare increases are to improve rail travel but we've seen little or no sign of any improvement for several years now. I hope this works for Virgin and they can look at more regional departures.

Could this be LHR slot protection? If one of the conditions for bidding for the ex BMI slots is that the airline mustn't have any slots leased out then these would have bought back in to enable a bid. Also, if Virgin get hold of domestic slots do they not have to run them domestically for a mandatory minimum period of time before claiming the route isn't working and changing them to long haul?

I assume there's no connection here to the LHR route development but myself and my family were booked on VS75 to Orlando in mid February, 13th to be exact, only for us to be emailed today saying that VS75 has been cancelled on that day and our booking moved to the VS73 flight. A shame as I was looking forward to the A330 rather than the 747-400

A bit of competition to both BA and First can't be a bad thing especially as this is on the UK's emerging No.1 trunk route....land or air.

[textarea]Manchester Airport worker 'died from deep vein thrombosis after breaking ankle'

A worker died from deep vein thrombosis weeks after breaking his ankle after slipping on ice at Manchester Airport, an inquest heard.

David Bickerstaffe, who was 43, suffered a blood clot on February 1 this year while he was still recovering at his home from the accident, which happened as he was getting out of his lorry, on December 19 last year.

A hearing at Manchester Crown Court was told that the area where dad-of-one Mr Bickerstaffe fell had not been gritted and that safety guidelines for icy conditions had been lost by his employers, Alpha Flight UK Ltd.

The inquest heard a risk assessment manual highlighting potentially dangerous areas in the depot – used for storing aeroplane food and duty free goods before they are loaded on to planes – had been mistakenly thrown away while a ‘snow plan’ for staff had been removed from the depot’s notice board.

[textarea]Dad refuses to hand over keys to demolition-threatened home

Peter Johnson’s home, on Hasty Lane, Hale Barns, is one of two properties due to be demolished as part of Manchester Airport’s scheme to build a cargo unit after planning permission was granted in 2009.

A dad has refused to hand over the keys to a property which is due to be demolished as part of airport hangar plans – saying he needs more time to arrange his departure.

Usually we're talking about how the airport was there first and they must have known the airport would expand over the year but the property has clearly been there longer than the airport and nobody could have ever foreseen growth at the airport to be as big as it has been. In my opinion, the airport should do the decent thing and offer the man more time to move home. I have recently moved home so I can appreciate how he feels right now. It's not easy moving when you haven't planned it and you need additional time off work, child care etc.

[textarea]Manchester Airport chiefs lobby government for support

Bosses at Manchester Airport have asked Downing Street to support policies that would help it grow

Passenger numbers at Manchester Airport could soar from 19 million to 33 million a year if the government accepts a raft of proposals aimed at unleashing its potential.Airport bosses have submitted their formal response to the Davies review of UK aviation policy.

It says there is spare capacity at all of Manchester Airports Group's gateways, while it will take more than 15 years to boost the number of runways in the congested south east.

MAG chiefs have urged Downing Street to consider an overhaul of the controversial Air Passenger Duty, which is passed on to travellers through tickets prices.

I've given the Manchester forum a tidy and merged some threads so it should be a little easier to navigate now.

On my recent visit to the airport I couldn't help but notice the amount of birds flying in close proximity to landing, departing and maneuvering aircraft. At no point during the two hours I was there did I see any bird scaring taking place. Does anybody know what methods Manchester airport uses to scare birds?

Rather than duplicate this in the MAN TCX and Flybe threads I've put it in the MAN General thread.

[textarea]Thomas Cook confirms Flybe partnership

Thomas Cook has confirmed a partnership with Flybe that will open up long-haul routes to regional airports across the UK via the operator's Manchester hub.

Thomas Cook Airlines hinted at a partnership earlier this year but has today confirmed the details of the deal.

It will mean that customers can fly from Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Inverness, Isle of Man, Norwich and Southampton to Manchester to connect with Thomas Cook flights to the Caribbean, Florida, Las Vegas, Mexico and Goa.

These include the only routes outside London to Antigua and St Lucia, and one of only a handful of flights from the UK to Barbados.[/textarea]

Air China is withdrawing services from Gatwick to concentrate on Heathrow. For the time being this will probably reduced the chance of either Birmingham or Manchester getting flights to China.

Just a bit of feedback regarding my trip to MAN this morning to drop my wife off for her United flight to Washington, according to the check in lady the 757 was 'rammed' which is a good sign, even considering the holiday season, and I have to say I have to say I was impressed with the new car park machines in T2 using the plastic tokens, my first experience of them and far better than the old paper machines. And to cap it all the flight has just arrrived in to Dulles 45 minutes early. Good day all round!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
