Sat in departures ready for my flight to OPO. Queue for security was nearly to Greggs when I joined. Screens were saying 35mins wait but I was through in 22mins. 2 new scanners were in use but I was directed to an older scanner on the far left hand side so I still had to take liquids out. I noted many new security officers on training so hopefully fully staffed for the summer.
Airport is really busy for a February afternoon. Couldn’t see any empty tables in the cabin bar.
Start of the school holidays so some will be taking an advantage to maximise time away abroad.

In all honestly, how long is a piece of string. There are busier days than others if you look at the departures, but there are many other factors that can slow the flow rate down.

Well it appears that LBA is well ahead of many of the bigger airports when it comes to the installation of the new scanners. Having completed the work to install them in a few weeks, and within the deadline, I wonder how LBA management will feel if the deadline for doing so is then put back, as suggested here by Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 Holidays?

The answer to that WH is that they will be brassed off and who is to blame them.

Heapy might just have actually, under his breath of course, be saying, we've done the necessary so why don't you start pressing the laggards elsewhere and get this done.
If the Government did delay by say, a year, then LBA have every reason to be brassed off because they could then have fitted this very expensive kit in the new extension and not in the current building where it will only be in use for just over a year at best

Airport social media release:
🚨 Security Upgrade Update:
LBA is currently installing advanced scanners to enhance the passenger experience. Whilst these works are undertaken, all passengers should adhere to the current rules, including packing liquids in clear plastic bags (not exceeding 100ml) and having large electronic devices ready for removal. Some customers may experience the new equipment whilst works are ongoing, but for now, we ask that all customers adhere to the existing rules.

However if, as I suspect, they will be fully operational by say early April, then LBA need to shout their readiness from the rooftops..They can rightly point out that they have progressive management, despite all their problems. They take both security and passenger convenience with the same urgency. It will show up others as being tardy. It can`t do anything but help to attract increase passenger numbers, which is the name of their game...

I believe the airport were relying on all 4 being in service to ensure there was no excessive queueing over summer.
They expected all of them to be installed and operational by April so if that's not happening now there are probably further supply issues. The change in specification which required Government sign off seems to have made an already bad situation worse.

The issue mentioned appears to be the lack of processing capacity if they take out two other lanes at this stage. Although the new machines are good, they would not cope with the passenger volumes and you get to a situation where the queue is back through the terminal again. Dammed if you do and don't but it appears the airport don't want to take the risk as they should have started work weeks ago.

LBA have put the following on social media

"
The Department for Transport has today issued new security guidance on liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGS) in hand luggage.
From Sunday 9th June from 0001hrs onwards, liquid containers up to 100ml may be carried through security in your hand baggage. When travelling out of Leeds Bradford Airport liquids do not need to be placed in a plastic bag and do not need to be taken out of your bags prior to screening. There is no specified limit to the number of 100ml liquid containers that may be carried.
Existing exceptions for prescription medicines and baby formula in containers greater than 100ml will continue to apply, these items must be removed from bags and screened separately."

They have not updated the website as yet.

Ministers have ordered an astonishing emergency U-turn on airport security following concerns about new equipment that allows passengers to keep liquids in their hand luggage.

Airports with the new scanners have been ordered to reimpose old rules from midnight on Saturday, meaning that travellers will be limited to carrying 100ml containers.

The press are in a rash all over that story. This is going to be a nightmare.

Not sure if the new government update effects LBA as they seem to be sticking to there press release looking on the socials
Simon Calder posted it on his X page but all the airports listed are the airport which had already changed the rules so it appears to be the government back-tracking due to safety concerns.

He says he's still trying to find out more details.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
