A further update:

While security has never been compromised, a number of airports using the new scanners have experienced long queues due to a higher-than-expected rejection rate, as security officers carry out hand searches. Sources have told The Independent that harmless liquids such as sunscreen have been misidentified as high threat subtances.

Seems an over reaction to impose new restrictions on airports with new scanners who arent experiencing problems. However lets not forget we are not going back to the old restrictions, its still going to be easier/faster than using the old type of scanners.

I don't believe it is an over reaction but I agree, it will still be a better experience as there has been no mention of returning to all electrical items being screened separately.

So in reality it is nothing to do with safety being compromised by the new scanners but everything to do with the scanners detecting false positives leading to long queues and the bad publicity that brings to airports. This has all the makings of yet another farce.

@White Heather I refer to the direct message I sent you a few weeks ago. It's a farse in the making.
Fairly typical of this Government.

Demand that airports meet strict targets for new scanners, at huge cost, then those that don't are 'let off' , then those that did have to partially backtrack again because of problems with (some) scanners, which might not even affect LBA. No doubt this is connected to the chaos at BHX this week?

Now we are likely to see chaos at other airports too with confusion reigning. No doubt some will be blaming LBA for it too.

And no need for plastic bags or taking liquids out of bags. Plus sounds like no restriction on number of containers holding 100ml or less.

Makes you wonder how this will be enforced though. Can the new scanners detect containers holding more than 100ml, also can the scanners count the number of containers?

It sounds like a nightmare for those who aren't clued up or even interested. They are not going be able to adapt to the new rules easily.

Good grief! The BBC, in the guise of Look North, have just done an entirely positive report about LBAs new security scanners, including interviews with passengers, all of whom were happy! The incredible thing is that it was presented by the BBC correspondent who is renowned for always finding a negative when it comes to LBA.

I need a lie down to recover from such a shock.

Also shown on the BBC Look North (East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire edition) broadcast from Hull and hosted by Peter Levy. Good publicity broadcast to viewers as far south as Grantham, Spalding, and Boston.

Couldn't believe it, and Calendar did the same, a positive news story, apart from saying West Yorkshire airport LBA.....no, it should have been Yorkshire's airport!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
