Really Ash if BHX where on Qatars radar i think this would have no efflect on BHX. I have read that as long as the demand in the regions to put bums on seats there will be no issues.
At the end off the day the police acted quickly ,And must be a plus for BHX and for the midlands police force.United had a bad time at MAN with handling agents in the early 90s with a aircraft that diverted from LHR and was reported we will never come here again ,But now has scheduled flights daily,I know they merged with continental but if bad news sticks they would of never of returned to Manchester.

I agree with Andy, sounds more like poor handling from the crew more than anything else.

spoke to The Daily Mail: “We were told they were waiting for refuelling and then a new crew.

A spokeswoman for Qatar Airways apologised for the delay. She said that after the diversion the plane was unable to fly back to Manchester as operating crew had exceeded their legal flying hours by the time that the aircraft had been refuelled.

Passenger and crew safety, she said, were the number one priority and a new crew was taken to Birmingham as fast as possible, at which time the plane took off for Manchester.

“In the meantime, Qatar Airways arranged for the transportation of the passengers to Manchester.”

The only thing they could possibly blame BHX for is any delay in refueling but in a situation such as this handling agents will tend to their regular schedule first and fit in any diversions as and when possible, it's the same at every airport.

Birmingham Airport and Qatar Airways are proud to announce that new service between Birmingham and Doha will launch from 30th March 2016.

With eight flights a week, including two flights on Saturdays, passengers travelling to and from Birmingham will have access to convenient and seamless transfers at the airline’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport.

The announcement of this new route further strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the UK regions, with Birmingham being the centre for the largest concentration of businesses outside of London, boasting 34,285 companies including over 700 international firms. Residents of Birmingham and the surrounding areas will be able to enjoy greater choice and convenience when travelling without the need to transfer through London.

Qatar Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The route will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner which has a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. All seats include individual television screens, with Economy Class customers benefitting from a screen 10.6-inches wide, offering the latest inflight entertainment comprised of up to 2,000 options while experiencing the airline’s award-winning service. Every seat is an aisle seat in Business Class where passengers can catch up on sleep in a fully-flat bed or make productive use of their time utilising the large work surface area. Passengers can also stay connected while travelling with the option of Wi-Fi which is available throughout the aircraft.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “We are delighted to announce Birmingham as Qatar Airways’ fourth destination in the United Kingdom from March 2016. This additional route strengthens Qatar Airways’ commitment to the regions across the UK and will create new commercial and leisure links between the city of Birmingham and the 152 destinations served by the airline.”

Birmingham Airport Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe said: “This is fantastic news for both Birmingham Airport and the region, and is our tenth new airline to announce or launch this year. Not only will our passengers have the choice of flying with the award winning carrier to Doha’s state-of-the-art hub Hamad International Airport, they will have a choice of 152 destinations served by the airline, including South East Asia, China and Australasia.”

The departure times in both directions provide convenient, quick and seamless onward connections to 152 key business and leisure destinations across Qatar Airways' ever-expanding global network. Passengers can now take advantage of reduced journey times from Birmingham through to Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Africa with cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangkok and Hong Kong now easily accessible from the West Midlands.

The wonders of the Orient are that little bit closer to Birmingham with flights to Hong Kong taking a total of 17 hours including just a 2-hour transit time at Hamad International Airport. For those wishing to explore exotic Thailand, the journey from Birmingham will take 15 hours and 30 minutes with a 2-hour transit.

In Pakistan the airline serves seven destinations including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar, Lahore and Islamabad. The airline has also recently announced two new destinations in Australia, Sydney and Adelaide, commencing in March and May 2016 respectively, in addition to the currently operated Perth and Melbourne services.

When flying with Qatar Airways passengers can look forward to a one-stop transfer at the airline’s hub Hamad International Airport (HIA), home of Qatar Airways. The airport houses one of the world’s largest and most luxurious Business Class lounges – the Al Mourjan Business Lounge - and also has over 40,000 square metres of retail space and restaurants that includes a selection of more than 70 retail and 30 food and beverage outlets.

The national airline of the State of Qatar was named the world’s best carrier at the 2015 Skytrax Awards earlier in June, marking the third time the airline has won this coveted accolade. The airline also won Best Business Class Airline Seat and Best Airline in the Middle East.

Amazing news for BHX and really ensuring that the growth achieved in 2016 will continue on into 2016. Assuming there are no major cut backs or pull out over next year, BHX should be close to double digits growth next year???? and they are introducing the route not only daily but 8x weekly. The question is, will this impact on the rumoured Emirates A380 start in 2016? interesting times indeed!!!

As of March, assuming an all 2 class configuration for emirates, the will be 29 weekly flights between BHX and the UAE, which equates to circa 21,800 seats weekly or an impressive 1,135,000 seats annually!!!!

Excellent news to finally have it confirmed and 8x weekly is quite a healthy schedule to start with, I assumed they'd come in at 4/5x weekly.

I wouldn't be surprise if Emirates start an A380 in reaction to this. I don't think the A380 factor can be underestimated and it would be a great way for them to fight back.

Great news indeed.
If BHX is serious about expanding long haul services then these are the flights they should filling.
This could then encourage the national airlines of the countries EK and QR are connecting to,look seriously at perhaps starting services in response.Perhaps even some of the smaller airlines could get in on the act and build up a niche market for themselves.
Qatar and indeed EK only start these services if they believe that demand is there so it is great for BHX to welcome another new airline to it's list of regular carriers.
Really hope this route is successful. :good:

Excellent news and the 'icing' on a very tasty cake of new starts/announcements we've seen through 2015.
Looking at the timings and with regard to the different flight numbers, it's easy to see how the service could be developed into a double daily at some point in the future.

Regarding EK, they don't seem to be shy of competition. If you look at how they responded at Manchester, if an A380 was on the cards for BHX, I think it still would be.

The aircraft itself acts as a 'passenger magnet' - although it would represent a huge increase in seats between Birmingham and the Middle East in a very short time.

About time!

This route ticks all the boxes - perfect aircraft in the 787, a stronger oneworld presence and what has shocked me is the frequency - I was expecting an initial x5 weekly but x8 is amazing!

I'd say this is the perfect end to the year but hopefully the could still be more to come from Norwegian!

Now bookable. Timings seem a bit cranky though. 5h 50m on BHX-DOH but 8h 20m coming back?

Woohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo time to get the fizz out. QATAR ARE COMING TO BHX, QATAR ARE COMING TO BHX.

:good: :D :D :D :D :D

Fanbloodytastic.

Again well done to the team BHX, i think they have really "excelled" in the last 12 months. And the year isnt out just yet.

Funny reading through all the old comments on this thread - how much was so wrong (an A350, MAN x3 daily by now) and some things not far of the mark (split schedule). Just goes to show nothing is ever certain until that official announcement.

It took a while but we finally got there!

There was an interesting post on another forum earlier today when, in wishing BHX well for attracting Qatar, it posed the question as to whether it was good news for MAN.

This does raise an interesting question, particularly in relation to catchment areas. Before BHX achieved Emirates, Turkish and now Qatar, MAN could rightly say that their catchment area would include the West Midlands. But that cannot be the same now as, in logic, the dividing line for the two catchment areas should be mid-way between the two cities....

BHX now needs to ensure that those who fed those services out of MAN now use their 'local' airport. And that is down to serious marketing...

Congratulations to BHX, Paul Kehoe and his team for making this happen. Get the Champers out!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
