Yes, that seemed to be standard practice. I don't think HSE would allow it nowadays!

This was tried just over 50 years ago by Channel Airways using the brand name 'Scottish Flyer'. The route operated by HS748s and later Viscounts routed SEN STN LTN EMA LBA MME NCL EDI ABZ but surprisingly didn't last long!

Remember seeing this at NCL when I lived in Newcastle. Yes, what stood out was keeping the starboard engines running on the Viscount when it was on the ground.

The Viscouts I saw were in the basic Continental c/s, I remember them shutting down the 2 port engines and I believe it ran for 9 weeks. Unfortunately, I hadn't started taking photographs at that time.

Dredging up IPS once again as they've just added to their website the following notice:

USC is, from what I can see, a real (as we must make that distinction here!) airline with a single A340 in service registered as D-AUSC which has been flying for Air Madagascar under wet-lease until yesterday.

Well if this happens on an A340 certainly won’t be LBA, but they already had changed it to MAN anyway. Just another Hans Airways or Global Airlines I suspect

The bosphorus divides Istanbul as well Europe and Asia. It’s the only city on two continents.

We know. The point was being made that LBA is already an intercontinental airport due to flights to Turkey and Cyprus, which are in Asia. From next year we can once again add Africa too.

I always wonder too about the Canary Islands and Madeira. Yes, they are Spanish and Portuguese territories, but geographically, they are many miles from Europe and off the coast of Morocco, so should, in theory, be classified as Africa.
