Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but which airline gets priority over the 2 air bridges? as I know Thomson, Monarch, Jet2, KLM and BA all use them, do they have to pay for these or is it first come first serve?

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

It depends, if there is nothing else using them then the Airport allocate as the feel necessary. It usually goes on the size of the Aircraft, for example a 757 can only use stand 8,9,11,14 and the far remote ones so they have a better chance of getting an Airbridge.

There is a bit of politics too, BA will always get one and KLM will if one is free. Ryanair don't like them. It's very much what the airport and airline have signed in their service agreement.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

When BA started they insisted on the airbridge as part of their agreement unless other factors get in the way on the day. This is supposed to be the same for KL as they also pay for its usage, however in the last few years during the summer they were constantly shunted onto stand 5 for the TCX to use.

And as for the PIA that's put on stand 8 as it wouldn't fit onto 7 and for ease of all involved due to the complexity of the turnaround.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Air bridges don't fit into the airports 'low cost' model yet they sign up airlines such as British Airways who insist on using air bridges. The airport authority really need to address this and add at least one further air bridge.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

It would seem that LBIA may have acquired a couple of (ex London) Red livered Mercedes-Benz Citaro articulated bendy buses for airside passenger operations.

I saw the first vehicle about 2 weeks while passing by LBA along Scotland Lane; it was parked airside down on the new apron facing towards Cookridge. Then this evening while passing LBA on me way home at around 17:15 I saw yet another vehicle on the back of a low loader on Victoria Avenue (A658) which seemed to be heading towards the airport as well...

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

LBA did say at the last but one consultative committee meeting that they were purchasing a couple of buses for airside, as they acknowledged that they had nowhere enough to cope with the busy summer ahead. Lets hope there are people to drive them!

hi white heather
you hit the nail on the head when you said lets hope there are people to drive them,my son and family flew out to paris on sun 28/4/13 they went thro the gate onto a bus and guess what no driver, the bus was packed solid they had 2 young children, people started moaning it could only happen at leeds, sometimes its the small things that that let lba down.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I noticed yesterday on the webcam there was a BA parked on Stand 8 however the air bridge was not attached and also this morning somebody posted a picture on Instagram (a photo app) there was a Jet2 757 on Stand 8 with the air bridge not attached again, has it been in use today? Anybody know if there is something wrong with it?

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Buggered again. Happens every now and then. I don't know if FMT ever visit to service the airbridges.

On another note I hope we have a few more stands by next summer. This business of overnight parking behind stands and in taxiways looks p**s poor and unprofessional. One aircraft change and your first morning departure is potentially blocked in.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Continuing on from the ongoing debate on the PIA forum about the runway extension, I do think now that an extension is essential for further development. Probably one of the most suitable options available (and I think someone else mentioned it a few weeks ago) is to build a 100-200m starter extention on stilts at the start of 32. Then the threshold could be moved back to its location it was before the extension. This idea is not impossible, you only have to look at Madeira airport and I think most of the runway there is on stilts. The stilts there I think are about 230ft high. Another extension can also be done at the other end of 32. This would get rid of the need for all the landfill and get the well needed extension.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Maybe this should be put to the committee by White Heather as a question at the next meeting, am sure if LBA had a longer bit of concrete then we would no doubt already have some long haul routes operating, but well done must go to PIA for taking the risk

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I have raised this issue until I blue in the face, but unless there is a major turn around, it isn't going to happen. Just put a post on the PIA thread on this issue.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I tend to agree with kevinbev and the above mentioned extension could double-up as a potential airport link road tunnel to the South East end of the runway as discussed in the Road, Rail & Access thread. The airport could cut the cost of any such scheme by partnering with the Leeds City Region funding. I understand road traffic close to runways can interfere with the ILS so building a bi-pass without tunneling might not be an option, so this option would kill two birds with one stone. Runway extension in way of an overrun/starter-strip with increase landing and take-off distance on both runway 14 and 32 as well as providing a new airport link road.

Cracking idea!

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Does anyone with a technical grounding know if the Honeywell GBAS (Ground Based Augmentation System) which is currently being trialled may be the possible saviour of Leeds (especially 14) on a foggy day? The first major airport to be equipped will be Frankfurt.

Some of the key facts of the GPS based system include:

• 3 – 3.2 degree glide slope possible
• Accurate within 10 metres, but with a ground unit precision landing criteria can be fulfilled.
• Already certified to CAT I at Bremen with Cat II / III within 4-5 years.
• Cost circa 4 – 5 million Euro
• Large number of different approach procedures with just one station

Downside is the only aircraft types that can use the technology at the moment are the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

I suspect you have answered you own question with the last sentence of you post.

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

Runway 14 requires a 3.5 degree glideslope to give the height clearance above Otley Chevin, so I don't think 3 to 3.2 is sufficient to cure LBA's runway 14 problems?

Re: Runways, Aprons and Taxiways.

The West Yorkshire Police Helicpoter crew have just took the following night picture of LBA's runway 32/14 and posted it on twitter.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
