With the big day tomorrow Emirates-wise, it'll be interesting to see how the folk of the West Midlands react to the return of the 'elephant' compared to its inaugural flight by A6-EOR in 2016. There was 'standing room only' in Sheldon Park and the multi-storey car park, with plenty also in the main car park and on the hill by Bickenhill. The crowds waited patiently for the takeoff too!

Also, will it have a water salute welcome this time? And will they put the downwind fire engine a bit closer this time if it's another windy day?

I think I was in Sheldon Country Park for arrival then walked up to car park 5 for departure.
 
Sorry this isn't related - what is the work going on in the fields behind the runway that you can see on the vids? See a few diggers - is it HS2?

I think it's the upgrade of Catherine-De-Barnes Lane which will form a link road to the new junction on the M42.

I'm not sure if the proposed new service station got through planning or not?
 
As I understand it, Elmdon municiple airport was requisitioned by the war ministry for pilot training of the locally built Lancaster and later, the Spitfires prior to being ferried to active stations of the RAF. Given the designation RAF Elmdon the runways were paved and 06-24 together with 15-33 remained once returned to civilian use until the short runway was closed. In recent times it has served the RAF as a bridgehead for Germany and South Atlantic trooping flights where Brize Norton were unable to do so. The persistent runway issues and ongoing expansion of the airfield in Oxfordshire together with the unavailability of RAF Fairford to USAF needs has meant an enhanced role for our local airport, for which I am grateful. No use of Heathrow and limited space at RAF Northolt is good revenue for BHX

I think I'm the guilty party referred to but as pointed out by Nethercoat the Air Minestry were the originaters of RAF Elmdon.

As JENNY JET says the two tarmac runways were built at the outbreak of WWII.

Elmdon was used for final assembly of Stirling and Lancaster bombers manufactured at Longbridge and the wings and fuselage joined at Elmdon after being transported by road to a final assembly factory the other side of thr railway and towed over to the airport before departing to the RAF for active service.

Elmdon originally had five grass runways until the two tarmac ones were constructed pity they didn't build one of them into the prevailing winds.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
