Could we speculate as to why Air China don't just start the service ?

Is it protecting LHR ?

Given they alrwady have rights and the fact it would be a money spinner given they must be aware of Hainan figures, it seems odd they don't take up the service ?

It's a victim of the battle of internal politics between regional and central government agencies.

Shanghai is not an Air China preferred airport however they do serve A* partners hubs in Germany with Milan and Paris added as premium heavy destinations within Europe. They only fly to Beijing from Heathrow.

The regional government sponsor China Eastern and they aim is to get slots in Beijing to start Long haul services from there.

The central government and through their agent CAAC continue to block this so the regional government in turn block Air China expansions in Shanghai (won’t give them slots)

As said countless times nothing in China is as it seems or as easy as simple market forces. Aviation is no different and long haul in particular remains an serious tool for the political power and projection aims and goals of the Communist Party over simple market forces, indeed some of those goals conflict between regional and central government agencies.

In basic terms the state through the CAAC remains all powerful and a multitude of differing and sometimes colourful liveries can be something of an illusion.

Air China can do no wrong - are the preferred carrier for All premium heavy long haul routes from Beijing and indeed major regional cities particularly Shanghai and especially those to *A hubs.

China Eastern get what they are given from Shanghai mainly to partner alliance hubs - in the main Skyteam and a few premium routes such as Shanghai To Heathrow

China Southern are also a regional player from Guangzhou with similar flights to partner alliance hubs and Heathrow - Interestingly through they do have traffic rights and operate to Amsterdam from Beijing -The only big three European route from the Capital and not in the hands of Air China.

This is something of an historical anomaly as they were originally awarded the routing Guangzhou-Beijing-Amsterdam with the stop over mainly due to performance issues at the old Hongqiao Airport some years ago

Then you have Hainan Group they are the tool for many secondary markets and none Hub to hub routes in the main.

Beyond that a few other regionals have been granted long haul from smaller Chinese cities for which Air China and the other two big grouping have little interest.

I know these applications to the CAAC have already been referred to (elsewhere if not on here) but it will be interesting to see (A) if they are approved, (B) if HU activate them, and (C) whether the routes are started in the sequence and timescale indicated. Note the London route application from a city that frankly I'd not head of is from 2nd March.

Here is a mischievous thought re that proposed new service from PEK to EDI/DUB. How about during the quieter Winter months they maintain MAN at daily and tack on one of either EDI or DUB each day? Then split the services again during Summer months. The idea isn't too outlandish ... historic slot applications show that they seriously considered tacking DUB onto the PEK-MAN schedule last year.

Puppy love for Chinese passengers

Manchester Airport let the dogs out as it surprised passengers arriving from Beijing as they waited for their baggage as part of its Chinese New Year celebrations.

Passengers travelling on the direct flight from Beijing got a treat when their baggage came around on the carousel – with a cuddly toy dog. More than 250 stuffed toys were given out to passengers to mark The Year of the Dog.

The dogs proved hugely popular with passengers, as they filmed them on the carousel and took selfies with the toys. A Chinese Lion dancer was also on hand to help with the celebrations.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: “What better way to see in The Year of the Dog than by giving our Chinese passengers their very own cuddly toy dog upon arrival to the UK’s global gateway in the North. We’ve had direct routes to China since 2014 and each year our Chinese New Year celebrations get bigger and bigger. We’d like to thank all our passengers for flying through Manchester and wish them a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year.”

The surprise was part of Manchester Airport’s Chinese New Year Celebrations as it marks being the only airport outside of London to have direct flights to Beijing and Hong Kong. The airport has been transformed with Chinese lanterns and all week passengers have been surprised with the airport choir singing, and a Chinese dance flash mob.

Manchester Airport is also sponsoring Pugfest on Sunday 25 February at Tribeca on Sackvill Street. Pugfest will see Chinese entertainment and activities including the Grand Pug Dog Show, Chinese themed food and drinks, a Chinese fortune teller for both humans and pugs and calligraphy and Chinese lantern workshops.

Just added the video to go with that snippet. Great advertising for Hainan Airlines and the airport!

One little aside from that clip. The Chinese student who lodges with a relative's family has told me before that the Hainan Manchester flight is "always busy but everyone using it is Chinese". The video certainly reinforces that perception. The service seems to be well known amongst the ethnic Chinese demographic but it doesn't seem to enjoy great awareness amongst 'Westerners'. And all the MAG sponsorships and promotions seem to target ethnic Chinese communities specifically. Maybe there is scope to promote awareness of this service to a wider audience? Having said that, I've been aware of this service since it was first announced, but when I wanted to use it they loaded the fares so late that I'd had to give up waiting and book with another airline instead. Other linked arrangements were dependent and had to be finalised. So maybe that doesn't help? My Chinese friend often books the day before travel. Maybe late booking is more the Chinese way?

Maybe late booking is more the Chinese way?

Apparently it is. It must make yield planning a nightmare where lots of pax are Chinese citizens!

Recently I met with some people regarding Chinese travel agencies, and one key stat is that they book right at the last minute, and where they can, often only book one way.

Not sure if that last part would not apply to our route as I'd imagine visa requirements mean they'd have to enter the UK with a confirmed ticket home...maybe not if they hold student visas?

Potentially useful info for those who use availability and seat maps to gauge a route's performance!

What on earth has been going on with HNA Group? According to this report they are hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, flogging assets and have the Chinese fuel companies threatening to cut off supplies by the 18th.

I hope everything turns out all right but it doesn't look good for HNA - or for the likes of Norwegian who are running massive losses and are in a similar situation to HNA with their fingers in multiple pies and more subsidiaries than I can keep track of...

Crikey has it been three years already. At least it appears the Manchester service is still going strong unlike Edinburgh which apparently ceases operation later this summer.

From the end of October Hainan's services from Shenzhen to Dublin and Beijing to Dublin/Edinburgh will be withdrawn. The load factors have been very poor. How is the Manchester service doing and is this an opportunity for growth ex Manchester?

Following the withdrawal of Hainan flights from Edinburgh and Dublin I'd like to think they can work to sustaining what they have at Manchester before considering additional routes as nice as that would be.

Not good news this evening but the Foreign Office are now advising against all essential travel to China. I don't know how this will effect flights?

It wouldn't be the first time such an unforeseen event or disaster has hit MAN on newly started or about to be launched services.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
