Yes it was me
While im confessing,
We used to go down inthelift from the car park, into t1 arrivals with our bikes as well
And at the bottom the lifts would open and theyd be dozens and dozens of angry people stood therewitb the cases and small children we would have to wade through as well lol

Hooligan!

The black flooring and the noise it made when you pushed the trolley over it, I think originally the black flooring all over but then it was removed as bits were refurbished.
I remember security being next to WH Smith just under the big departures board, it was a short run from departures landside to airside, something like three lanes of someone checking your boarding pass and some bag scanners? My memory of departures airside is fuzzy, I remember a big duty free and sitting area but thats mostly it. I think most shopping was done landside.
Great photos! And the film cameraman who keeps popping up was Howard Summers. Small world.

If there is interest I’ll have to finish and upload a video I edited during lockdown of my and a few others footage from the mid 80s to early 90s.

I remember those days as well, I had to leave once the evening Swissair arrived and be on the 44 to Northenden and hope to catch the 370 back to Brooklands Road. this would be in 1977-78

And a bag of chips at Longley Lane !

I’d also be on that bus with my dad and we would walk to the post house to get the 102 back up Hall Lane.

Occasionally in June and July we would go on our bikes and stay on to about 10 pm on a Friday to catch the SAM Caravelle However it’s was rarely on time !

I did this a while ago. Thought it may be of interest.

Good pics. I remember the first 747 watched it land with my dad parked up on Moss Ln. Thanks for the correction - thought there weren’t 75s when I was 7

Having read the "General Thread" re the cafe at the top of the terminal, reminded me of my first visit to MAN in August 1965. Admission to the piers was one shilling (5p) and most spotters went on to the International Pier.
If my memory serves me well, the operators were:
BEA Visc/Vang; BOAC VC10/B707; Dan Air DC3/748; Cambrian Visc/DC3; BUIA Herald; Starways DC3; Aer Lingus Visc; SAS Car; Luxair F27;KLM DC9;

In those days there were not as many movements but a lot more variety of airlines and aircraft.

Great picture with some fond memories.

The largest aircraft (G-BNGL) is an Inter European Airways Boeing 737-300 according to the airline's fleet history.

The airline was owned by the Cardiff-based Asprou family whose holiday company traded as Aspro Travel. Aspro and Inter European Airways were bought by the Airtours Group in the very year this picture was taken.

Inter European did a lot of business at CWL and BRS and my wife and I once flew to Larnaca and back from/to BRS with them around 1991. Those journeys were on Boeing 737-300 aircraft. I don't know if it was the same aircraft for the out and back journeys or even if either or both was on G-BNGL. I've never recorded registrations and Inter European had several Boeing 737-300 aircraft.

I always had a soft spot for Aspro and I always loved their livery. I always remember their staff as being exceptionally dedicated. In many respects I think Jet2 are the modern day equivalent. Maybe not everyone will agree with me on that one though.

What was the first 747 movement at Manchester. I've read it was on the 9th Feb 1969 but it didn't say the airline?

A quick Google several sources (Wikipedia etc) say August 1970 apparently a B.O.A.C. 747 so over 50 years ago, where did that time go?

Just to confirm Rollo's post, the first visit was a demonstration flight by BOAC on 17th August 1970 when B747 G-AWNC arrived.

I hope that helps and yes I sneaked off work to see it.

Coincidentally I did the same to see the first 747 at BHX it was a publicity effort promoting travel to Australia by Qantas who were opening a travel agents in Birmingham.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
