To me it seems that the quality of airline and airport press releases has been steadily deteriorating over the last few years.

There have been quite a few recently that have been really bad, non more so than that one posted on here from Thomas Cook.

I wonder if there is such a thing as proof reading anymore?

Proof reading is a really skilled job and good proof readers are hard to find and can summon large fees. People use the spell check when writing an article and think that is all that's needed. Our church magazine is supposed to be proof read but this month there are conflicting reports on " copy date" for next month - they are on the same page, one above the other!

Seasider proof reading is indeed a skilled job, but it does not start there. I started my life as a proof reader's assistant on a daily newspaper being required to read the reporter's copy to the proof reader after it had been transposed into hot lead via a linotype machine and then inked before being rolled out onto a galley sheet. Thus, the proof reader would have the galley sheet and i (the copyholder) would have the original copy which i would read to him aloud. In this way the reporter's original copy and the work of the linotype operator could both be checked at the same time.
Added to this check you would then have the proof reader check everything for both grammar and newspaper style. That might sound laborious but it is how newspapers for generations enjoyed the approval of their readers
Sadly, i doubt if any newspapers or PR publications now use proof readers. They disappeared on the newspapers i worked for about 30 years ago....
Working as a proof reader's assistant proved an ideal grounding for what later became my career in newspapers finally ending in my being appointed an editor.
As a footnote i would add that grammar is not the only problem i see on newspapers today. I really don't know why but it is my belief that young journalists today do not have the high level of general knowledge that we had in my young days. But perhaps that is another story....
* I am sorry if i am guilty of a bit of thread drift but i thought it important to make these points.

British Airways Launch Almost 19,000 Seats From Birmingham Airport

British Airways begins one of its busiest summers ever in the UK regions next week with the launch of additional frequency on popular leisure routes from Birmingham Airport.

The addition of two new Embraer 190 jets to the growing aircraft fleet means that almost 19,000 seats will be on sale from Birmingham to some of the most popular leisure destinations in Europe, an increase of 16 per cent compared to last year.

There are extra flights to Florence and Palma from Birmingham, as well as flights to Malaga.

In May last year British Airways launched new summer-only routes from Birmingham Airport after an absence of 10 years.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ General Manager Customer and Commercial, said: “We are growing our summer schedule from five regional airports, including Birmingham, to destinations that our customers tell us they want to fly to. Last year we almost doubled the number of routes we operated and this year we continue to add even more destinations and an additional 36,000 seats from the UK regions.”

Tom Screen, Birmingham Airport Acting Aviation Director, said: “Again we are delighted to welcome back the British Airways tail fin to Birmingham. With almost 19,000 seats on sale to Florence, Palma and Malaga during the summer months passengers have extra choice from their local airport and to travel on the familiar British Airways brand.

“It is great to have British Airways back for a second year after ten years of absence and we look forward to working with the airline to extend its range of destinations from Birmingham Airport.”

All regional flights operate on modern Embraer jets with a choice of Club Europe and Euro Traveller cabins and two-abreast seating so that every customer can have either a window or aisle seat.

Each-way fares from Birmingham to Palma from £44, Malaga from £46 and Florence from £53 are available to book now on www.ba.com

Is the summer 2018 programme as follows?

2 x PMI, 1 x FLR and 1 x AGP all operated by a based aircraft and with the first PMI inbound arriving in the early hours of Saturdays and departing on Sunday mornings and with no IBZ this year?

The reason I ask is that there appears (I say appears because the BA information is confusing with their timetable at odds with their booking engine plus an incorrect press release) to be a change with the BRS programme in mid-summer.

In May and June the situation is that an inbound flight from AGP will arrive in the early hours of Saturdays, then perform rotations to PMI, AGP and IBZ before returning to AGP on Sunday mornings. FLR will be operated by a separate aircraft that will arrive then depart. However, from July it looks as though the IBZ route at BRS has been axed as it is not in the booking engine but is in the timetable.

Thank you for any confirmation (or correction) of my understanding of the BHX situation.

BA City flyer are getting x 4 extra E190s at LCY with new routes already announced including Rome etc etc

However what does this mean for there S19 Regional weekend operation ? More routes ??

To Mr. Winterbourn RE. Proofreading etc.

My first employment after leaving The Four Dwellings school was as a proofreader/copywriter for an advertising business and it was that attention to detail that got me interested in the study of Law.

Given my disabilities, I continue to read Law as an academic hobby much to the annoyance of the few friends I have left. I do not and never shall enter into practice.

I was in court last year and was held in contempt for arguing with learned counsel over semantics :shy:. I believed in the importance of being correct especially in a court of Law. Appeals have been won or lost upon the correct use of language etc.

Just a minor rant, herein at an end!

It seems we might have lost another airline as S19 has been taken off sale.

Really frustrating as a poster on the other forum reported excellent loads on BHX-FLR, and with four more aircraft coming into their fleet there was potential for an expanded schedule with better flight times! :spam:

Oh dear.

Ordinarily I wouldn't be too concerned, a couple of weekly E190 flights aren't going to do too much damage but the airport made rather a big deal out of BA returning, yet in true BHX style they're gone again in the blink of an eye. Should be a good one for the media to get hold of.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the fact that they lasted two seasons at BHX rather than the usual one.

Just when are things going to change :(

If i remember it was more a certain gentleman who made a big deal out of it rather than the airport. He delighted in having his picture taken with the BA tail looming above him.But as you say 2 seasons would count as a success for him.

Quite true and to us on here we know the difference but for the general public, as the CEO, he was 'the airport' that bought back BA and it will now be 'the airport' that loses BA.

Success breeds success, what the hell will the last few years breed?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
