Went into Brum again today by train for the second time in two months which is more than in the previous five years

We had a great time saw the bull, had a meal in Brindley Place and spent some time in the Library I'd forgotten what a fantastic asset that is for Birmingham then the inevitably shopping they've got a Marks and Sparks and a Primark you know.

Birmingham is completely unrecognisable from my youth when my wife and I lived there. a really vibrant city and we are still Brummies and always will be.

To be fair one thing definitely hasn't changed I'm sorry to say the Blues are still useless 😕

Rollo, I too am an exile of Birmingham but am pleased with the regeneration. I recall walking down New Street from the Town Hall and going into Woolworths for a satisfying meal in the Cafeteria. Great egg and chips for little cost. Birmingham was people friendly then but do I detect a sterile city today? To be clear, I have not visited since my PIP interrogation, ten years ago! PIP has been withdrawn since.

Hello JENNY JET my you were a busy lady last night it really good to have your considered input back on here.

I wouldn't say Birmingham felt sterile at all but certainly a lot cleaner, smarter and more vibrant than back in the day, we walked past where woolworth used to be and the Odeon I saw T-Rex there and yesterday was a good day Brum can hold its head up high.

I do enjoy visiting cities and in fact next month we are flying from BHX to Malta for a fly cruise and will visit Rome, Florence and the Acropolis in Athens amongst others. However as much as we enjoy visiting these places I could not live in a city these days for love or money ( don't tell Brum X) like you we live n Worcestershire not a million miles from the Ridgeway which maybe you know from your previous postings.

The Ridgeway, Saltway and other 'ways ' are quite close by i.e. Same postcode! As to being busy, when I am having a good day, I tend to catch up on F4A and other matters. I miss the city for the amenities and transport access to medical facilities. Brum X provides welcome information for which one is grateful.

Not too shabby eh 😎

In its summary, the DCMS report said from the moment the "iconic Raging Bull stormed into the Alexander Stadium" in the opening ceremony, to the "final notes from the legendary Ozzy Osborne as the curtain fell, these incredible Games have captured the imagination".

The event was the best attended Commonwealth Games on record, with more than 1.5 million tickets sold.

Birmingham saw a big boost in visitor numbers during the two weeks, while the report said the legacy was expected to continue both in terms of the local economy and wider benefits for local communities for years to come.

https://brindleydriveconsultation.co.uk/

'We’re aiming to submit a planning application to Birmingham City Council in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please let us have your comments as part of public consultation by Friday 23rd September.

Should our proposals secure planning consent, we aim to complete Brindley Drive towards the end of 2026.'

The Masterplan will be delivered in stages, and we will submit two separate planning applications:

  • Application A seeks full planning permission for the part-demolition and refurbishment of the historic Typhoo Tea building and associated public realm, including a public route to the west of the building, a public square and a temporary pedestrian route to the north linking to the HS2 Curzon Street station.
  • Application B seeks outline planning permission for the wider masterplan area and will set the context for future applications to be delivered. Masterplan works are likely to include demolition of some buildings (in whole or in part), and delivery of new commercial and residential buildings and public realm improvements.

A great update. Many thanks for posting.

Liking the idea of two 150 m plus towers opposite one another. Confidence shows no sign of abating.

The BBC studio is a very strong move for the city. Ever since they moved to the Mailbox, they have been an afterthought, given the strong presence they had at Pebble Mill. The city needs to develop its creative sector, and this will be a key driver.

Keep it coming.

Any idea when the crane arrives for the Octagon?

It's already here Ian, it's been here for weeks. We are expecting a 2nd crane in the new year. :)

It's only a tiddler at the moment but will grow to circa 170 metres at full height.

If you scroll up to the image of The Ocagon on my first photo, you can see where the crane is ????

Cheers mate. My mind must be going. Twice now I have not seen things in the last two weeks on here.

I'm afraid you are all wrong, the crane count is over 30 as lots you simply can't see due to the density of all the taller buildings. Lots of cranes over the other side of the city too, scattered around the Jewellary Quarter/Gun Quarter's.

:geek:

Including this crane next to the BT Tower, photo credit to Sefton on SSC

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
