Looks like winter is finally on it's way with the wind turning easterly next week bringing much colder weather.

The second storm of the winter season is expected tomorrow afternoon as Storm Barney heads to the UK. The Met Office are saying the South of the UK is most at risk with wind gusting to 80 mph in places from the Midlands South.

Maybe we'll see some more LHR diversions (you have to sympathise with the passengers even though it makes for great plane spotting).

For some reason I always think about ATR turboprops whenever there is stormy weather.

The media has said Heathrow and Gatwick flights are likely to be affected but I imagine the wind direction will make LBA and BHX out of limits for most traffic too. I imagine Manchester will be the main benefactor of any diversion traffic, that is if Manchester is accepting diversions?

Turkey has seen some shocking weather this week with over a foot of snow in Istanbul. The cold weather is starting to encroach on other European cities as it gradually moves westwards towards the UK. The average night temperature in Kiev is -5 at this time of year, on Sunday night the temperature dropped to -18. Similar can be said for other Eastern European cities.

Later this week the UK will have it's first chance of some proper winter weather with swathes of the country at risk of seeing the white stuff as easterly winds set in.

Just watched the BBC's long ranger forecast and although as you would expect, there is some uncertainty but they say the UK and Northern Europe in particular is likely to be colder for the remainder of the winter with a stronger chance of ice and snow.

Snow Watch

The UK Met Office has issued an early warning of Snow for much of the central parts of the UK on Thursday night into Friday.

Lets hope that it actually appears this time, the kids are desperate to build snowmen.

I won't hold my breath though, they've been forecasting this since October.

We had plenty where I live this morning (yesterday in fact :coco: ) but it melted almost as soon as it stopped.

The Express said:
UK set for HEAVIEST SNOWFALL in years: Long-range forecast warns of Winter 2016 BIG FREEZE

The headline we've come to expect from the Express. It's become an annual event, sooner or later they'll get it right.

The UK Met Office has release its long range forecast for planning authorities. The forecast does not predict specific weather events but more of a generalisation of what the weather is likely to be. The Met Office is saying long range models are suggesting blocking to the jet stream for the next three months meaning there is a strong likelihood of colder drier weather but also with more risk of snow events.

My 'like' is not because he's no longer with us but to endorse your sentiments. He had a very pleasant personality on screen (I'm sure he was the same off screen too). Sadly, he was reportedly suffering from dementia in his latter years.

Thoughts are with his loved ones.

I was always interested in the weather when I was a kid and I grew up watching weather presenters such as Ulrika Jonsson, Bill Giles, Ian McCaskall, Michael Fish and Sian Lloyd. Michael Fish was probably the most famous for saying there's no storm coming when there was.

Bill Giles

These days Carol Kirkwood and Tomasz Schafernaker are probably the most fun to watch.

Those old enough to remember will be sad to hear Ian McCaskill has sadly passed away.

Deeply saddened to read of Ian McCaskill's passing.
Whilst remaining totally professional, He also brought an element of humour to his weather reports. I remember one specific example, when he said something along the lines of - 'I remember as a child, the snow coming up to here (pointing to his waist)', 'but I was only this tall (pointing to his knee), so the snow was probably only this deep (pointing to his ankle)'.

A delightful Gentleman. Like others, I offer my condolences to his family and friends. Those of us old enough to remember him, will do so with fondness.

RIP Ian and thank you for enlightening our evenings, whatever the weather.

Kevin

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
