Leeds Bradford: Jet2 Flights, New Routes & Base Updates

Not LBA related but just for interest , Jet2 have announced flights to Jersey from Bournemouth next summer, which seems like a very short flight and odd route for a Boeing 737 800. It is possibly the shortest UK route operated by the type?

I think BOH to JER went through on long period of being unserved , perhaps surprisingly, as traditionally many south coast airports such as Shoreham, were linked to to CI. Im going back but this route was operated by Dan Air with a 748, I know that because I remember booking it when I was a young travel agent in the early 1980s !

I think the Liverpool to Isle of Man route highlights the historical connections between the two locations whether that be business or family. The same probably applies to Bournemouth and Jersey.

As a matter of interest the ferry ( which you would have to catch from nearby Poole) operated by DFDS takes 4hours 30minutes.

I have relatives who live in Jersey, you are right about the travel time, however the DFDS ferry comes in for constant critism due to the ferry being regularly canceled and regular delays. So Jet2 could be on to a winner here from Bournemouth as the hospital in St Helier can only undertake specific operations so patients are regularly transferred to Southampton Hospital for their treatment.

I think so. Im sure you're right there will be family links, its not that far.

I have relatives who live in Jersey, you are right about the travel time, however the DFDS ferry comes in for constant critism due to the ferry being regularly canceled and regular delays. So Jet2 could be on to a winner here from Bournemouth as the hospital in St Helier can only undertake specific operations so patients are regularly transferred to Southampton Hospital for their treatment.

Also the reality bizarre thing that has happened this year both Guernsey and Jersey have awarded their ferry connectivity to the mainland to different companies. It was all operated by Condor. It now made it more complicated.

Overcapacity, as @White Heather alluded to the Spanish anti tourism lot, Greece Turkey unable to pick the slack just yet and let’s be honest Jet2 face little competition out of Leeds.

Coupled with the ongoing cost of been ripped off crisis (or squeezing the middle class) by large corporations and supermarkets it’s a recipe for this.

As for loads as @LBA4EVER has said running high frequency with 75% LF if you condense that down that’s still 400 people if not more (PMI it’s around 1300 people based on 6 flights a day on a 737-300).

I think there’s also been a little bit of slow down due the political situation, election, unsure to book what will this new government do etc.

And then there’s the euros tournament which will have probably slowed down the late bookings.

Oh and as much as people don’t seem overly bothered after 10/20 years of constant talking about the climate I wonder if it’s suitably having an effect on peoples decisions.

And then there's also the nightmare travelling has become, almost deliberate to put people off, which it has/is doing. Even finding decent fares can be a challenge these days, although sites like businessclassforless.com can sometimes help reduce the cost if you're willing to compare options.

All these factors.

I would also guess days of the week will affect the load factor due way people have leave.

If it really had one winglet and one sharklet, it would be highly unusual. Airlines don't normally operate aircraft with mismatched wingtip devices because they affect aerodynamics, handling, and performance, and any modification would have to be certified. It's more likely that the viewing angle, lighting, or the design of the winglets made them appear different. If anyone managed to get a photo of G-JZBA that day, that would help confirm what you saw.

It depends how many of the DFDS passengers are looking for a 7 day trip with a hotel thrown in. Jet2 is rarely an economic bet for flight only. Whatever its origins, it is now, primarily, an IT airline.

Ski, unlike sun / city, has always stuck to its traditional change over / transfer days. There are some occasions / some flights etc which operate off cuff but on the whole the majority of flights operated are on a Saturday and Sunday.

I doubt that Sunday is a popular change over day in Salzburg, as opposed to Saturday which means for LBA we will be getting 1 weekly flight. As Jet2 sell seats to ski tour operators which will likely drive the days they operate (due to the above).

All bases are 1 weekly on a Saturday to Salzburg.

As for Innsbruck - probably no market it for it from LBA. Unsure of reasoning but I’m sure our poor road infrastructure has something to do with it.

I doubt there is no market for Innsbruck. Pretty much all the ski resorts in Tirol are best served from INN, rather than SZG and Voralberg ski resorts are even further west.

Leeds use to be able to sustain a weekly winter charter flight to Innsbruck operated by Austrian Arrows Fokker 100’s, eventually even using Lauda’s Boeing 737’-700’s for a couple of seasons. But that’s when they had specialist Tour Operators Inghams & Crystal Ski jointly onboard.

Isn't it also the case that specialist training is needed for pilots flying into Innsbruck due to the nearby mountainous terrain? If so, that would be a disincentive to operate there as there would need to be suffucient trained crews available at all airports operating the route. It may be seen as being more bother than its worth for a (likely) weekly flight.

Yes specialist training is required. Jet2 operate to INN from four bases, so I very much doubt that is an issue.

Presumably then, those 4 bases are perceived to have a greater demand for Innsbruck than LBA and therefore worth training up the crews to operate there. No doubt Jet2 feel that we can travel over to MAN if we want to fly there.

Isn't Funchal the same? I know it's a "Captain Only" airport, would that imply special training as well?
It's a Jet2 weekly destination, travelled every year from LBA for past 5 years and going again in September.
3 or 4 of the flights have had 2 Captains flying the route.

Innsbruck is a captain only airport which also requires the first officer to have undertaken additional simulator training in case of emergency which I believe is standard practice for captain only airports.
