One of the videos on the BBC has a Jet2 aircraft in the company’s original livery, so probably 15 years old or more.

That particular 737 made what looked like the best approach of the lot, appeared well lined up, stable and nailed on for a very good landing, yet went around , whilst others, that looked like a go around all day long, landed. The Alicante-Leeds flight which diverted to EMA earlier today positioned back to Leeds (pax on board?) but after half an hour holding has diverted back to EMA.
May be due to congestion at Leeds as other flights have been landing and taking off.
Journalist struggles to write an accurate, realistic report!Just seen a ‘pilot struggles to land’ headline on one of the so called local media outlets ‘news’ sites.
I can assure you they aren’t ‘struggling’ with anything. They’re flying in accordance with SOP and if they go outside of SOP they go around. Chances are that if they managed to land then they were within SOP and therefore weren’t ‘struggling’ at all.
Other planes are landing…737/800 EI-EVJ(Ryanair 232) inbound from Stansted, vectors for ILS runway 32, 1955
Go-around 2000, take up hold.
Can hold for 1 hour and hope the wind dies down, if not wants to divert to Malaga!!
Trying another approach 2045, go around 2050, divert to Malaga737/800 EI-EVJ(Ryanair 232) inbound from Stansted, vectors for ILS runway 32, 1955

You would have thought he would have had enough fuel to hold longer. It diverted back to Stansted
No came back empty (or tried to) but couldn’t land again so went back to EMA.The Alicante-Leeds flight which diverted to EMA earlier today positioned back to Leeds (pax on board?) but after half an hour holding has diverted back to EMA.

Of course, but to sensationalise it as a ‘struggle’ in MSM parlance isn’t accurate as it evokes danger which, when within SOP, it isn’t. I’d prefer to use the word challenging than struggling personally, I’ve flown some challenging approaches into LBA with the usual wind changes below 200 on 32 and the steep glide on 14, but I’ve never struggled with it. Wrestled maybe but that’s just to keep on profile as if you don’t you go around. It definitely is a struggle! A battle. A wrestle!
Yes we’re flying to SOP, but the only SOP affecting us are the limits. SOP doesn’t derive how much input we’re having to put in to keep the thing level, that’s just skill!
Yes indeed. I think the media imply a different context to the word struggle!Of course, but to sensationalise it as a ‘struggle’ in MSM parlance isn’t accurate as it evokes danger which, when within SOP, it isn’t. No debating that it’s a core skill/competence of the job. Sometimes people forget that’s one of the things pilots are paid for! At this time of year it can be quite tiring can’t it..
