There are a few local vloggers / streamers who seem to relish filming when its windy. Lots of thumbnails on youtube with WINDY in capital letters, presumably to entice in the viewers and a bit of money. I’ve seen ‘WINDY’ in the preview of an upcoming stream when the forecast was 20 kts. I guess sky / bbc then get in touch and ask if they can use the footage.

Just seen a ‘pilot struggles to land’ headline on one of the so called local media outlets ‘news’ sites.

I can assure you they aren’t ‘struggling’ with anything. They’re flying in accordance with SOP and if they go outside of SOP they go around. Chances are that if they managed to land then they were within SOP and therefore weren’t ‘struggling’ at all.

The Alicante-Leeds flight which diverted to EMA earlier today positioned back to Leeds (pax on board?) but after half an hour holding has diverted back to EMA.

May be due to congestion at Leeds as other flights have been landing and taking off.

That particular 737 made what looked like the best approach of the lot, appeared well lined up, stable and nailed on for a very good landing, yet went around , whilst others, that looked like a go around all day long, landed.

Journalist struggles to write an accurate, realistic report!

737/800 EI-EVJ(Ryanair 232) inbound from Stansted, vectors for ILS runway 32, 1955
Go-around 2000, take up hold.
Can hold for 1 hour and hope the wind dies down, if not wants to divert to Malaga!!
Trying another approach 2045, go around 2050, divert to Malaga
Asked about airport being open all night for return trip.

Ryanair B738 EI-DLC is covering the return trip to Malaga.

No came back empty (or tried to) but couldn’t land again so went back to EMA.

There were some excellent piloting skills on display. I suspect experience of landing at LBA in such conditions plays a part as does a bit of luck in a stable approach not being knocked off course by changing winds at the last moment.

Probably was out of limits on the speed, or gad wind shear!

It definitely is a struggle! A battle. A wrestle!

Yes we’re flying to SOP, but the only SOP affecting us are the limits. SOP doesn’t derive how much input we’re having to put in to keep the thing level, that’s just skill!

Of course, but to sensationalise it as a ‘struggle’ in MSM parlance isn’t accurate as it evokes danger which, when within SOP, it isn’t. I’d prefer to use the word challenging than struggling personally, I’ve flown some challenging approaches into LBA with the usual wind changes below 200 on 32 and the steep glide on 14, but I’ve never struggled with it. Wrestled maybe but that’s just to keep on profile as if you don’t you go around.

No debating that it’s a core skill/competence of the job. Sometimes people forget that’s one of the things pilots are paid for! At this time of year it can be quite tiring can’t it..

Yes indeed. I think the media imply a different context to the word struggle!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
