I was down at Gatwick on Sunday and a plane reported a triple bird strike. Runway inspection had to be carried out which delayed departures and arrivals. Birds do have an impact.

I have had 11 bird strikes and 4 lighting strikes during my 30 years plus of commercial and private flying which finished two weeks ago. The worst was in my Grumman AA5B after taking off from Coll an Island in Scotland. A big seagull made an awful mess of the right wing leading edge.
Aviador has understood my point that the PR machine does not work and residents who have no interest in aircraft other than when they are going on holiday wonder why Yeadon Dam now has half its bird population missing and are not happy about it. The Airport need to be more proactive and explain why this is happening and the safety implications.
They cannot kill every living thing that might interfere with aircraft operations it does not work ! I am sitting watching a flock of birds crossing the 14 threshold now good job we have next to zero movements this morning they must have missed some.

Hi Lewis.

This might be one for White Heather to answer as she was the one who was asked to raise the issue and ask a question at the Airports Consultive committee a few months ago by several members on here who had complained about the area, Trees/Bushes not been cut, Car Parking Issues and Litter been left behind, Kids playing/wondering around the Cemetery as well..

All i will add is if what you have heard is true. Well it sure dose look like the discussion we had on here about rising the issue with the airport and Leeds City Council has bitten us in the backside!

Well if that is what is to happen then my fears about raising it were well founded, although I have to say that the response from the Leeds Councillor who was at the meeting (who took the action point as the Yeadon councillor was not there), was entirely positive and there seemed to be a recognition that there had to be somewhere for spotters to go. There was certainly no indication that he would go away and try to close the area down and he did say he would try to get the bushes cut back. However, bearing in the mind the problems around there, complaints from cemetary users (not the residents!), there was always the risk that this could happen at some time anyway, because the situation has slowly being getting worse.

If anyone can confirm the situation before the next meeting I will of course take the said councillor to task if it turns out to be the case that the area is to be re-marked with double yellow lines. I say re-marked because believe it or not the entire stretch of road had double yellow lines and no waiting signs immediately after the runway extension and I have seen the police up there in the past handing out tickets to offending aviation enthusiasts.

Looking on the bright side at least the area will still be available for spotters to use on foot and I guess the dam car park could get a whole lot busier than it already is.

Hope this is not true, but I stick to my original observation that the Airport provides a viewing area at the side of Multiflight subject to a small fee being payable. By the way you can get an annual card for this area from Multiflight for around £25.

Looks as if I will have to use my blue disabled badge to avoid a ticket, at the cemetery,is it still a adopted road.

Suspect the Ryanair diverted there from Leeds last night due strong winds and heavy rain.
Give in on the Eastern.

I see that another big advertising hoarding is going up just South of the tunnel. Quite a few yellow jackets working on it yesterday. I would love to know how much they make a year from these hoardings. Does anyone have any figures they can quote?

Re: Spotting Movements Log & Heads Up

I see the airport has announced this morning that this years local Santa charter flight will be operated by Ryanair this coming Saturday, December 1st 2012. So Ryanair are not as bad as everyone would like to think they are......

Ryanair Santa and Fairy

Search for Santa Flight

Ryanair and Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) have teamed up to offer twenty deserving families across Yorkshire the chance to enjoy a festive treat in the skies.

On Saturday 1st December Leeds Bradford Airport will provide a Christmas welcome with a day of fun filled activities. Santa will join us on board to surprise the children with an extra special visit in the skies above Yorkshire.

The children will be greeted at the airport by Aladdin, Cinderella, Widow Twanky, fairies and an array of Santa’s little helpers. They will then join in the party fun whilst having a festive treat before searching for Santa high in the skies above Yorkshire.

LBA air traffic will be put on standby to find Santa’s whereabouts on his secret training trips prior to the big day. Their mission will then be to help guide him onto the plane so that he can take part in the festive games and Christmas Carols whilst Rudolph refuels with some hand-picked Yorkshire carrots!

Tony Hallwood, Commercial Director of Leeds Bradford Airport, said “We are pleased that Ryanair have chosen Leeds Bradford to host this festive flight. We want to ensure that families in the region who may have been touched by illness or have had a difficult year can have some precious quality time.”

Maria Macken of Ryanair said “We are delighted to be able to offer families who have had such a hard time this year, a day to remember. We hope the children will really get into the party spirit and come dressed as princesses, superheroes and fairies.”

If you wish to be considered to join the flight please email [email protected] and explain why you should be included on this festive trip. Please note parents must have a valid UK passport. Successful applicants will be notified no later than one week prior to the flight.

I am surprised that they are doing this as in the past our beloved council made LBA take them down as they contravened planning regulations. One of the banners in question can be seen in my pic of the Wardair DC10, advertising the Toronto route. Shorty after that the council ordered that they be removed, but in recent times they appear to be making a comeback.

The new advertising hoarding is finished and is displaying another British Airways advert. I'm not particularly keen on it personally (the ad that is not that hoarding), as it doesn't look clear enough to have much impact like the Ryanair or Jet2 ads.

This image with a caption of "Leeds Bradford to the World" Would have been better in my opinion.

Yeah I would of thought that this is normal as the pilots may apply different types of brake pressure depending on where they have been told to vacate. I presume they were landing on 32 so if air traffic had told them to vacate via taxiway alpha, which is unlikely for a 757, they would have to stop more quickly, therefore applying more brake pressure than say if they could use the entire runway length than backtrack to the taxiway november turn off which is most common for the 757

Yorkshire European Airlines used to fly to Aberdeen/SouthamtonIsle of Man using Bandeirantes in the summer of 1996.

Departing from t'Leeds Airport, landing 5 minutes later at t'Leeds Airport. Because if it's out of Yorkshire, it's not worth going t'. :pardon:

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
