I noticed the other day that a new sign on the road to Scotland Lane just after the junction with the Airport turn in clearly shows directions to a 1 hour free car parking area.

LBA have found a new way of enticing passengers to the airport from the Teesside area - just at a time when Teesside Airport is claiming to be fighting its way back. Middlesbrough FC have announced a partnership deal with LBA in which every goal they score from now until the end of the season will result in free flights on offer for fans of the Boro. The article gives a positive image of LBA and the services on offer to the Teesside area, so quite a clever way of drawing attention to the airport and 'stealing' a few pax who might otherwise have headed North to Newcastle or stayed on the Trans Pennine Express and headed over the hill to Manchester.

The article shows a photo of the launch, with Adam Clayton (Boro midfielder, ex Man City, Leeds & Huddersfield) on the apron with David Gornall of LBA - who admits to being a lifelong Boro fan.

It strikes me though that it is strange for LBA to partner Boro whilst there is nothing similar in place with either Leeds United or Bradford City. Perhaps they should consider doing so! Maybe Yorkshire cricket too and raise awareness across the entire county!

Wonder if airport feel the need to sponsor either Leeds Utd or Bradford City? LBA seem to have a deal in place with the Business Desk website as they have recently had both Eastern Airways and British Airways adverts appearing as pop ups. The Airport also advertise on behalf of the airlines and operators using billboards, Bus Ads and local Press/Newspapers.

I think Monarch Airlines had Leeds Utd covered, Whether thats still in place I don't know! Jet2.com/Jet2holidays seem to work with Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie plus have billboard posters and ads on the side of First West Yorkshire buses from time to time. I do know that Multiflight partner with both Huddersfield Town FC and Yorkshire County Cricket club, as i've definitely seen there adverts at Headingley when at either a Test Match or T/20 Games.

What's more annoying is the fact that there hasn't been any news updates on the airports own website for months now.

Just waiting to board my flight back down to LHR and sat watching BA land, it looks like the air bridge on stand 8 has stopped working and passengers have disembarked from the back steps!! Looks like this is how I will be boarding!

Air Bridge 8 was installed way back in 1994 I believe. It has been constantly breaking down over the last 5 years or so. I hope LBA replace it rather than remove it.

I would imagine that BA & KLM would demand the use of an air bridge and having only one could mean both wanting it at the same time.

Just as a point of interest, the last time I flew to Heathrow, we boarded using the air bridge at LBA but then parked on a remote stand at LHR. The resulting bus ride to the terminal took 15 minutes.

I flew from LBA today on the shuttle and was surprise to see stand 8 air bridge is still broken, leaving BA to park on stand 7. I would have thought it would have been fixed by now!

It surely depends on what is wrong with it? Air Bridges are specialised equipment, subject to H&S etc, and it is unlikely that parts are available off the shelf - assuming it can be fixed. It is commonplace to have to order parts and wait whilst they are manufactured so a quick fix may not be possible and may not be the fault of LBA either.

as Aviador stated before, a very old piece of kit (Over 20 years), may not be easy to get replacement parts. If has been also breaking down on a regular basis this will mean a review to replace.

I think I mentioned the cost previously, the cost of air bridges range from around 1m to well in excess of £1.5m per air bridge so yes they're an expensive piece of kit. With a lifespan of over 20 years though I would say it's money well spent by the former council owners.

As I recall, the airbridge on stand 8 was installed in about 1997 or '98. The stand 7 bridge arrived about a year later. The one on stand 7 only has vertical movement which might explain why it doesn't go wrong as much as the stand 8 specimen, which is multi-axis.

Incidentally, both bridges were manufactured and installed by FMT of Sweden. I don't know who, if anyone, maintains them.

That is true and I understand FMT are required to make the journey from Sweden to carry out any maintenance work on them. I seem to recall one engineer telling me he'd made three flights in one day to get to LBA on a call out job. That's going back a couple or years or so now though. It's an expensive job maintaining them but it must be worthwhile. I think I worked it out at just over £1000 per week. I think the airport used to charge airlines to use them, but I don't know if they still do.

You never know, But I hope not! I have read on twitter posts from disgruntled Leeds Utd fans regarding the Middlesbrough partnership recently with replies from LBA stating to keep an eye out regarding further deals been done, which may include Leeds Utd and Bradford City...

I have also been told to 'watch this space' with regard to LBA and Leeds United although Bradford City were not mentioned. I suspect that any deal with Leeds United would have been on hold as the owner hasn't been at home for some time!

I was driving through Leeds earlier today and couldn't help noticing the old Yorkshire Post clock tower (which is now an electronic advertising board) displaying how wonderful Manchester Airport is. This is heaping embarrassment on LBA, the owners and the management team who do very little to advertise their own offering and allowed their rival to walk right into the middle of it's largest demographic and claim the turf with no fight. At this rate, the advertising hoardings around LBA will be emblazoned with Manchester Airport decals.
