I hope this doesn’t come across as rude, but what kind of research are you doing? Contacting airlines on the other side of the world that have never expressed interest in long haul (Frontier, Southwest, Bangkok), plus a cash-strapped airline that has dropped its only UK route and ceased all scheduled flying is not going to be productive.

The airlines we really need to be hearing from are the ones we already have, and those who have expressed serious interest in the past.

- Do Aegean still have plans to relaunch ATH-BHX?
- Do Blue Air still have plans to launch BCM-BHX?
- Will Austrian return on VIE-BHX for summer 2021?
- Are Aurigny, Loganair, or any others looking at picking up the Isle of Man route?
- Will Indigo and Spicejet, who had applied for slots before the pandemic, still be interested in BHX if and when UK-India travel recovers?
- Are Ryanair and Wizz interested in basing further aircraft at UK airports outside London, with easyJet seemingly on the retreat, and Flybe gone?

I can answer two of those..
- Blue Air, Bucharest to resumes 30 March 2021
- Austrian, Vienna to resumes 28 March 2021

Hopefully we will get more info on furture airlines & routes when comes 2021 along.

I also love the enthusiasm and optimism like this is something that is definitely needed at the moment. I totally agree with jfy1999 though, maybe it's time to channel all of that energy into some a little more realistic and he's given some great examples.

A few more.

Given the sheer amount of routes missing or seriously under served, easyjet and/or Wizz are possibly the two airlines that could make the biggest impact at BHX. I hope that a base from either is high up on the priority list.

If we are talking about getting new airlines in then Finnair and TAP Air Portugal would be good places to start. I'd also consider a potential return of Icelandair and Czech Airlines.

There may also be potential from more from existing airlines. What about TUi bringing back Goa and Phuket and finally giving us flights to Cuba? SAS bringing back Stockholm (hopefully with a decent schedule this time)? Eurowings adding Hamburg and/or Hanover?

Long haul I think is out of the equation for a few years and if BHX keeps what it had then that must be a result. For the medium term I'd be looking at aircraft such as the new A321s for flights to the North America, so JetBlue, Air Transat and possibly even an eventual return of United. Going east the two with the most demand are probably Mumbai and Hong Kong so you'd want to focus on Cathay and Air India.

It's an ambitious list but possibly a little more realistic than Bamboo Air :)

Sadly I think the next year or two is going to be about survival rather than growth but please keep going, we need someone championing the BHX cause (y)

Just start with Wizz and easyjet bases first !

it's going to be a long, hard slog for all non-London airports to attract established long-haul airlines to start up new services; it's proving difficult enough to keep existing ones on board! The newer long-haul airlines may have a chance in the regions but will probably only flourish where there is a known large demand (in the pre-Covid era!) or there's a bar on established airlines. The overwhelming mantra for airlines will be that they would lose a lot less money in current circumstances if eveyone in the UK can make their way to LHR/LGW to allow that route to be hopefully half-full rather have 2 or more aircraft coming to the UK that are going to be no more than 25% full.

Given all the restrictions that are in place, even standard European flying is going to be peculiar as what is announced one day to start in 2 months time may end up being usurped by updated advisories for that country. Not too many companies would be overly delighted to see an employee fly out for a week's holiday but then discover that that person would now have to go into self-isolation for up to 2 weeks so effectively 3 weeks away from work..

Where I work, we literally had someone come back to work the day before Portugal was put on the 14 day self isolation list and we have 2 coming back from Rhodes with another going to Turkey.

I have received correspondence from LOT Polish Airlines (sounds interesting if they do decide on Birmingham in the future)

LOT Polish Airlines

We constantly introduce new connections to our offer, maybe in the future we will be flying there also

EVA AIR - Have responded and I hope it will be Positive especially in these economic times it will help boost MG ROVER - LONGBRIDGE and Midlands Economic Sectors - * Shanghai * B747 * Lets see what happens.

EVA AIR SAYS: " Hi there, thanks for reaching out. We appreciate the suggestion and we'll be sure to announce it if we decide to do so. Thank you! "

VISTARA: " Currently, we are operating flights to/from London to Delhi and return" -
( I am surprised they did not compete with Turkmenistan and Air India in Birmingham.)
* I also have contacted Air Seychelles they have given positive feedback that they will be looking at the route, in the future.

Longbridge ?????

The offices on Lowhill Lane still exist do they not? The old entry point to the former factory nearby Cofton Park? I understood the Chinese bought the lot before developers transformed the area.

SERENE AIR : Hello. Thank you for your valuable input. Your suggestion will be forwarded to the relevant department for exploring the probability of implementation.

I am hoping with confidence SERENE AIR will take the opportunity to serve Pakistani Community from midlands direct. (fingers crossed)

The Taiwanese bilateral restricts airlines to London or Manchester. So where Birmingham comes in is anybody's guess.

Air Seychelles is a niche carrier with precious little chance of going outside of London (and yes, I am old enough to remember them operating out of Manchester 1996 to early 1997. Averaged roughly 100 passengers a flight... i imagine that it's going to far easier for passengers to use Emirates/Qatar to get there as it's pretty much totally leisure based demand)

I have spoken today with two International airlines they both have expressed their strongest interest to operate direct flights from Birmingham International Airport. They have requested something in writing and will take it from that document to analyse Birmingham International potential and deliver a service. On both conversation calls they said Inshallah will serve Birmingham International.

*Azerbaijan Airlines (Baku) and *Uzbekistan Airlines (Tashkent)

These airlines will be busy with tourism business and connections especially to Pakistan Lahore, and India Delhi; plus more.
It be nice to see these new airlines in Birmingham for Common Wealth Games)

British Airways:

NEW ROUTE British Airways
- London Heathrow to Lahore. Flights start 12 October 2020 LHR 1755-0540+1 LHE (Mon, Wed, Fri & Sun) LHE 0905-1310 LHR (Mon, Tue, Thur & Sat) Flights operated on B787-8 aircraft (Copy Pasted-from PIA Forum)

I have also spoken to PIA who say they will be looking at new routes from Birmingham when they return, I do hope it will include Lahore and Karachi passenger demand is high from midlands vast Pakistani Community.

I hope everyone have found my investigation interesting; do Stay Safe-

Don't want to sound picky Kjay, but its Birmingham Airport, NOT Birmingham International Airport, the word International was dropped 10 years ago! :)

"In September 2010, it was announced that after the merging of Terminals 1 and 2 into a single facility in 2011, the airport would drop the "International" from its official name to become "Birmingham Airport'"

Yes but how many carriers and routes have been lost because the rebrand may have diminished the airport as a departure point worth serving? I have never understood the reasoning behind that decision.

Sorry but out of the 10 busiest airports in the UK, only 1 has the word "International" in their name - Belfast International Airport - which is more used to differentiate it from the other airport serving the city - Belfast City Airport.

Pretty sure Birmingham dropping "International" from their name lost them a mega...0 passengers!

As for contacting airlines on social media, whilst I commend your enthusiasm, you'll be dealing with a member of the airlines social media team, not their route development team.

Even if the social media team asks the route development team if a new route will be launched, they almost certainly won't be able to say anything about if the airline is looking at a certain route - that information will remain confidential until the press release announcing the new route.

I've seen airlines post on social media asking people to vote from a list which destinations they'd like the airline to serve - it's almost always a PR stunt to raise awareness that the airline is about to announce a new route.

BHX is not the ony UK airport that has removed 'International' from its name (addendum: I've now noticed Cathanger's post that was submitted when I was typing this post).

I can only think that the airport owners/management believe that an airport of BHX's size and standing should not need to advertise itself as 'international'; that should be taken as read.

A number of smaller airports still style themselves 'international' perhaps to try to push themselves up the recognition ladder with the public, especially the local flying public as it's usually smaller regional airports that follow that path.

How about this instead when it comes to naming UK airports? BHX would be William Shakespeare Airport.

Stratford upon Avon is semi local to me and I can assure you that the last thing people there want is to be appended to BIRMINGHAM in any way or form. Linking Shakespeare to anything as vulgar as an airport would be horrific! And if it were, then Coventry airport would be their choice as that is more local.

I'm afraid the snobbish people of Stratford upon Avon ARE appended to Birmingham and via the Bard. The Library of Birmingham and the University of Birmingham have fantastic holdings of books etc linked to Shakespeare as well as strong links with the RSC. They might not want to be linked to something as vulgar as an airport so that rules Coventry out, even if it is closer.
