Half expected Loganair to pick up SOU as a replacement for BI, however this hasn’t materialised. I do wonder if they are fully committed at SOU as nothing new has been added since they opened their base at the start of this year. A summer seasonal SOU-LBA would probably do well during the busy cruise season!
I recently made this hypothetical timetable for a two aircraft base at LBA taking in all the schedule slack on UK domestic routes and some winter destinations for when the summer slacks off.

Remembering the ATR is cheap as chips to operate and it has a similar crosswind component limit to the B737M according to Google.

Re our domestic rail services. Edinburgh, Bristol and Plymouth are hourly. 2 a day to Glasgow and only 1 a day to Aberdeen. The big problem is that all are operated by Cross Country whose crappy overcrowded Yovager units that turn up are 4 car units most of the time.
Recently traveled to Exeter on them, luckily I was in 1st, but the rest of the train was rammed. Its really awful how they treat passengers, and they are often expensive.

Looking at the list White Heather listed, together with the additions of other members, there are plenty of destinations that could be picked up by Ryanair if they were to base an extra aircraft. Madrid, Brussels(Charleroi), Valencia, Oslo(Sandefjord), Shannon, Knock, Milan, Venice and Murcia could all be an easy fit for them.
Brussels would definitely help me for work as I have a number of scheduled meetings there, and Oslo for an easy route to visit relatives back home….come on Ryanair🍀

Well thought out plan that is.

But Sadly i doubt we will ever see Edinburgh, Glasgow or Bristol return. The just isn’t the UK regional airline to do it anymore especially as it seems Loganair are not interested

Yes just one minor detail - the airline to do it.

Many of those destinations wont necessarily have been dropped because they weren't making any money, some will have been dropped just because more money could be made on other more lucrative routes.

However unpleasant the train is, Leeds is well connected by train and to many destinations that is a far faster way to get around given flight check-in requirements. On the whole, the train is also cheaper: Loganair air fares, for example, seem to be set for business rather than leisure passengers.

I think it was Thomson's and their trusty BY737's - back in the day when they seemed to actually like LBA 😂
I seem to recall Dan Air 1-11s doing it briefly, possibly for Intasun, but Italy seemed to go out of fashion for beach holidays after some bad publicity about regimented beaches and rip off sunbeds.

There also was Olbia (Sardinia) which was operated a couple of seasons with an EDI based aircraft (I believe).
Yes, now added to the list. It was supposed to make a comeback until Covid put a spanner in the works. Jet2 still do it, but as usual, its from over the hill.

Southampton by rail, you are looking at over 4 hours and a painful cross London transfer via the Tube from King's Cross to Waterloo. The flight from LBA would be just 70 minutes direct.

An ATR 72 only needs to find 72 people a few times a day who value their time, their sanity, and a direct point-to-point connection over a stressful day on the UK rail network.

When Blue Islands announced 2x daily Southampton from Leeds I remember seeing a post on LinkedIn that Jonathan Hinkles was involved in getting them to come to LBA before they went sadly bust,

Which makes me wonder why did he never try whilst at Loganair, what did he see different with the Blue islands attempt?

Someone else's money?
Aircraft availability?
Aircraft location?

Jonathan Hinkles knew the LBA–SOU market demand was there, but an airline can only fly a route if the operational puzzle blocks fit. For Loganair, Leeds to Southampton was an isolated, orphan route with no local base support. For Blue Islands, it was a golden opportunity to make use of spare daytime capacity on an aircraft already based at the southern end of the route.

If you look at Flybe, there's no doubt that if you isolated their route performance airport by airport, you’d find plenty of highly profitable gems. The failure wasn't the market demand, it was over expansion and poor management skills that likely killed the business.

Remember before Covid there were direct trains to Southampton via new street without no change
I hated that train. I regularly used the early Leeds to Birmingham train for meetings at Five Ways. I always booked a seat and paid for it but more often than not, I got on to find someone sat in my seat and the overhead 'seat reserved' signs out of order, no doubt accidentally on purpose. The on board guards could be relied upon to do nothing whilst the occupant of my seat refused to move. Hardly surprising as if they did, they would end up on the floor or standing. So I too ended up frequently standing as far as Sheffield or even Derby. Coming back it could be the entire 2 hour journey. The service was a joke. Meanwhile my colleagues further North got to fly down and get a taxi from BHX!

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
