Re: Potential Routes

Just to touch on the above about a split of American passengers...
I was in York the other day, the place is swarming with Americans! It's a great tourist destination of course, and I think there is a large Bible college there with a lot of American students, so as you mentioned an LBA-NYC would surely would have enough takers!

Re: Potential Routes

Hi Ravmanlba - nice to have you on the forum and I hope you see your direct service to the US before too long.

Re: Potential Routes

Most Americans think you can only fly to London in the UK. It should be viable given the right amount of marketing and time to build up a passenger base. In today's economic climate it would be a brave Airline to try it .

Re: Potential Routes

hi everyone i have been a part of the forum for ages but have never posted

i was browsing youtube this evening and came across a video of tony hallwood sayin that the airport was in talks with iberia and span air to operate a daily link to madrid

fingers crossed

Re: Potential Routes

That is encouraging - lets hope he pulls something off and we get that link. It would be a huge boost for the airport and ensure there is nowhere in Spain that Yorkshire travellers cannot get to any day of the week. It would be brilliant to see Iberia here, who of course are linking up with BA, and there has been speculation about them coming back elsewhere on the forum. However, Spanair would be good, especially if they can come up with a code share agreement with BMi, since both belong to the same group of airlines.

Re: Potential Routes

Iberia is of course effectively BA now the two airlines have merged and reading between the lines I guess this makes BA a more likely contender to operate a Heathrow service as part of a wider potential deal. It would be a major coup for the airport if they did manage to get Iberia to operate the Madrid route. Jet2 always managed to get good loads and to be honest I couldn't understand why they dropped it.

Re: Potential Routes

I wonder if the Forums4airports survey results are in-line with the airports own survey results. So far Dubai, Madrid and Florida come tops with Toronto, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich not far behind.

LBIA expansion

just read the plans of what the airport plans to do and they plan to add new routes such as New York, Orlando, Vancouver, Scandinavia, there is currently talks with PIA to add another flight per week making it three instead of two what do you all think about this?

Re: LBIA expansion

I think Vancouver Airport Services would prefer a service from their own Yorkshire airport (a little birdie told me that winter ski flights for Whistler are a possibly) ;) , but I can see New York and Scandinavia working. Jet2 could even operate the service to New York on a more permanent basis. Orlando is rumoured to be returning to DSA next summer, could both airports support a service each?

Orlando,I don't see why Orlando shouldn't work from both DSA and LBA. A large number of Yorkshire passengers currently travel to Orlando from other airports in the North such as Manchester. I'm sure there is sufficient potential for services to Orlando from both airports on this side of the Pennines.

New York, I don't think we will be seeing anything more than weekend breaks to New York for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately we are all too aware that the major players on this route don't like to venture into regional airports. Even Continental Airlines which was once thought to support regional services seems to be going cold on the idea. The airline only recently pulled off the New York, Newark route from Bristol airport despite carrying good loads.

Scandinavia, This is a difficult one. Even if the will is there to launch flights to Scandinavia, it is very expensive there so I don't know if flights would be busy enough to be sustainable.

Re: Potential Routes

Just a pointer Ryan. Vancouver Airport Services do not actually own Vancouver Airport, the name is misleading in that way.

Even if they did, it would not stop an airline flying from LBA to one of their airports abroad should the market be questionable from DSA. It would not make business sense otherwise. Not that Im suggesting there is demand from either as i dont believe there is. Toronto on the other hand...

As for Orlando, what happened to Jet2 getting the 767's? As when they do i would think Orlando and certain bean destinations would be highly likely from LBA.

Ryan, were the TOM long-haul flights not pulled because of EMA already having them when they merged with First Choice.

Re: Potential Routes

With regards to a few routes, New York could be a difficult one, as MAN-NYC seems to be 'draining' the life from other airports. Its the only airport outside of London Heathrow to operate more than 2 flights a day to NYC (up to 5 a day).

Orlando wise, it would have to be a charter operator, as VS have no intention of operating MCO outside of LGW/MAN/GLA, but I have heard TOM may re-instate SFB from DSA. Maybe TCX could operate 1 weekly, as they are the bigger player at LBA in terms ot TOM/TCX.

As for IB to MAD, I know I seem very pro-MAN here, but with BA shuttle ops at MAN, and a large BA presence (up to 15 flights a day plus summer charters is still quite a lot), Id expect a IB link from there before LBA.

Thanks for pointing that out - to be honest, even though I've looked on their website, I just assumed they owned it due to the shorted name being YVRAS!

They were moved to Newcastle I understand.

Re: Potential Routes

i was talking about this with phil a course tutor who well up on leeds bradford and he even said jet 2 will not do new york cause they have to stop in shannon to refuel on most occasions when aircraft take off over otley and the chevin

Re: Potential Routes

Good old Phil! Jet2 could operate to New York on the 757 from LBA, but as Phil points out to you there are limitations. We calculated that considering the prevailing wind and runway use factoring in air pressure and general conditions that 4 out of 5 flights would be able to operate direct but there was the 20% that would be limited as performance would not be good enough to get over the chevin. The NY flights we did in December operated with full loads and both went direct, but there was always the element of requiring a tech stop, something that can only be calculated on the day.

Should a US flag carrier with a lower capacity (around 180 on a 757) operate to new York, there would be less problems but again it all comes down to on the day conditions. Jet2 will never do New York from LBA other than charter series, it simply would not pay. I would expect a US flag carrier service one day, but not this side of 2020.

Re: Potential Routes

Why does the Chevin affect anything!?
The aircraft is still going upwards?!

Re: Potential Routes

Yes, but so is the ground! If the meteorological conditions are not right or the aircraft is too heavy, then the aircraft will get too close to the peak. Performance calculations are done to make sure terrain is cleared by set minima on departure, and take into account what would happen if one of the engines failed.

Re: Potential Routes

I suspect the regulations regarding obsticle clearance limits were drawn up when engine performance was poor by today's standards.Modern 2 engine jets can still climb on one engine. The 32 flightpath continues for about 1 mile at the same height as the runway before rising about 200ft.To a non expert like me, the restrictions seem to be extreme.

Re: Potential Routes

Since we have already been told on the Jet2 thread that they are planning to gradually re-equip with 737-800's and eventually lose the 757's, that surely puts paid to all Jet2 operations across the pond, unless they do get a 767 or two - but that has also been scotched elsewhere on the forum in the past few days.

It may be true that MAN is draining away the demand, but much of that demand lives on our side of the hill and would opt to fly from LBA given the chance. I would not think that New York is even a real risk in terms of passenger numbers as it is already known that the passengers are there. It is surely a question as to whether or not the airlines can be bothered investing the large amount of money to set up from LBA, and to do so I would think they would need to be looking at more than once a week to make it worthwhile - probably three times a week in my humble opinion, with interlining available at New York for onward connections across the USA and Canada.

From what I understand, the 787 Dreamliner, when it comes into service, will eliminate a lot of the performance issues suffered by other types at LBA and remove the need for tech stops en route, so I think that aircraft, and who buys it, is the key to whether or not we get any significant long haul routes from LBA.

Re: Potential Routes

Potential Routes, "Bloody hell the airport dont even announce the new one thats on sale"

I really cannot understand why its now about 2 weeks go since Omega Holidays announced its 3 ad-hoc trips to Naples and the airport press team have not yet even issued a press release on the LBA website.

How do they (LBIA) expect people to even know that Omega are offering these trips from there local airport? Instead they put stuff on the website about supporting the Yeadon Panto...

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
